Is the heatsink backplate necessary? And if not, could I stick something under the motherboard to support the weight instead?

Picked up a 660 Ti today. I'm not gonna open it up until after Christmas...to see how much money I get. If I get enough...i'm gonna take my 660 Ti back to CompUSA and use that money + my Christmas money to get a 670 FTW Edition.

Yeah... How else is it going to hold onto the motherboard?

And yeah Splatter, reinstalling the OS deletes all of your data.

Yeah... How else is it going to hold onto the motherboard?

From what I've found out, the backplate is for solidifying the motherboard for the extra weight of the heatsink, not for securing it. Washers with the supplied nuts could do that.

I'm not sure what cooler you have, but yeah. You need the backplate no matter what. If it won't fit for whatever reason then it probably isn't compatible with the socket type of your motherboard.

Anyway, I still can't unplug the EATX 24-pin cable. I might as well get a pair of scissors and cut the cable since I won't be re-using the PSU...

The cooler is the Hyper 212+, being attached to the P8H77-I. Theoretically, it should fit. The problem is that there is a circuit component on the bottom of the motherboard interfering with the placement of the backplate.

Basically what I'm wondering is if I could supply the support the backplate normally gives with something holding up the bottom of the motherboard, or even a cable tied to the cooler then attached to the top of the case.

NO! It will be infinitely harder to get it out if you cut it!

Wouldn't you be stuck with a connector in the port?

Try wiggling it loose while you hold up the pin on the side.

My index finger is hurt. I could just take it to a computer store and let them install a new PSU for me.

I might as well keep trying...

Have you tried pliers? If you're not worried about the cable's connector, you might as well try.

Guys, if I only plan on playing in 720p should I roll with a 660 or a 650? Thing is I could get the 650 christmas day if I went with it. I want to run on highest settings (save AA, I don't see a difference between 2x and 8x) never going below 45fps unless it's something really graphically intensive like battlefield 3 or the original crysis.

660TI would do good, the 650 isn't really good.

I think he's talking about the 660.

Anyway, The 660 is a lot better and you can easily do 720p on maximum.

Ok, so, what if I went with a 650 for now (I have an old GT 430. I can't stand it anymore) and buy a REALLY high end card down the line? I think thats what I will do.

  • 12.23.2012 9:06 PM PDT

So? Does anybody know if I can support a heatsink's weight using something holding up the underside of the motherboard, or even a wire attached to the top of my case?

As long as your mobo has a x16 lane slot and two spare 6-pins, you can buy whatever.

GPU

Are there other options? Is this the best for that price? Don't get me wrong, I trust your knowledge, but I'm just curious to know some more choices :)

The 7850 is the same pricepoint, but lacks PhysX, adaptive vSynch, and nVidia's special AA options like CSAA, which I think you said you wanted. This one also comes with a free game.

Comparison.

7850.

Looks like I'll be taking the nvidia card.

Can you take pictures of where it's conflicting? You could cut the backplate.

If you can manage it, the 7870 would do wonders.
