What are you going to be doing on your laptop? If you're trying to play any games, you should stick with Windows 7. If you're going to try any programming then use Ubuntu.

Like what Salty suggested, if you're not going to do any gaming, Ubuntu would do wonders.

Alright. Some of you might remember me but I ended up buying my i7-3770K for about 130 (this includes taxes and shipping). I'll keep it in my wishlist just for reference when asking people what I should get but it shouldn't be included in the total price.

Here's the wishlist by the way.

How much does the HDD affect a PC, aside from storage that is.

Even then, there's Steam for Linux now (with a source engine port in the works, and games from Humble Indie Bundles), and despite what others may tell you: WINE can work well.

I'm using this build for visual effects and game development in college and hopefully a few more years down the line. I'm not just doing gaming. I'm still debating on RAID 0 though since it's costing me $380.

Speaking of which I'd like some people to help me reduce the cost of my build. I'm getting a 1TB HDD from work for about $100, possibly a DVD drive instead of a blu-ray one, and a less expensive case if I can find one that's good.

Its RPM speed can affect load times and boot times, also how fast it can read and write data. 7200RPM is the standard.

ah okay, I know only a bit, after posting I felt a little dumb because I remebering talking to someone about how gamedesign/photoshop type stuff took a lot of processing and ram.

Good luck to you btw

Ah okay, I didn't know if 250gb and 1tb had a huge difference for reading off the HDD, but its all about the RPM huh.

Thanks for the info. Also I plan to do some gaming, would a micro atx motherboard with 8gb ram, 3.0 ghz cpu and a 1gb 128 bit videocard do fairly well, I don't need super highend but a decent look and run speed.

Replace the 680 with a 670 and get a Corsair PSU instead of the Cooler Master.

Anyway, SeaSonic kicks ass but the 8-pin EATX connector is too short so I can't run it from the other side of my case. I had to run the cable over the front of my mobo in order to connect it to the ports.
Bam.

I'm still debating on the video card since I'm doing a lot of video rendering (both 3D and 2D). I was going to get a 660 originally before switching off to a 670, then to a 670FTW, and finally a 680. I'll switch the power supply though.

There is literally only a 3-5% increase in performance going from the 670 to the 680. If that's worth $100 to you...

Ehh, that'll leave a lot of residual water on the CPU. I would only use 91% or better, but if that's all you have, I guess you could try. Just make sure it's perfectly dry.
