Subject: Unable to install Halo on PC using windows 7

I have recently bought a copy of Halo Combat Evolved for my PC, which is running Windows 7. I have read some of the FAQ's and from this I can see that I should be able to run the game on Windows 7, however, when trying to install the game I get a disk writing error when the installation is 11% complete.

The game installer tells me that I have either not enough space on my hard drive (of which there is more than enough space) or the file it is trying to copy is already in use (which it isn't, as I haven't even managed to install the game). The file is the a50.map file.

Is this a common problem? Is it something wrong with my PC, as opposed to my operating system?

Any help would be great.

Something wrong with your PC, I would imagine. Limited to you HDD. Halo CE installed perfectly on my computer which runs 64bit Windows 7.

It goes without saying, have you tried deleting whatever files were installed and re-installing?

Tried it, many times.........

Something smells fishy...

I'm not sure but I think your Halo disk might be scratched or something. I guess you could check your disk for scratches and if there are some you could clean the disk.

Another thing you could do is trial and error. Try to install Halo with your Halo disk on a different computer. If it successfully installs then you know there might be something wrong with your computer.

If that doesn't work then you maybe you could try borrowing a disk that isn't scratched just to see if it installs. If the borrowed disk successfully installs then you know that your disk is scratched.

blarg.

I have 64 bit Windows 7, runs fine. It's your disc, you'll need a new one unfortunately.

I would not start ignorantly suggesting someone buy another copy of a game when they're having issues with it. I'm willing to bet this has nothing to do with his disc and you just sent him out to get a second copy of a borked game.

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

Given his issue, though, a scratched/corrupted disc is probably the cause.

Regardless, there's really no reason to run out and get a new copy of the game. Just find an ISO of the game disc, boot it up into a virtual drive, run the installer, and put in your legit key when it asks for it. Then, install the latest patch manually. Problem solved.

Oops... My bad...

Anyway, point still stands; the game is borked and no one should ever buy it twice. Some would argue that no one should ever buy it once. :D

Strange messages for a broken disc. You could also open the datax.cab files on the disc and see if you can extract them. If you can, the disc is fine.
