But I find it is really odd that there would be a new Marathon game, because it is so old and Marathon is not a modern FPS. (It had 2-D monsters in a simulated 3-D world, like Doom in a way)
Well obviously its not a modern fps(for its day it was modern) but that would hardly exclude it from getting remade nor another sequel being made

OMG, I just realized something.
Sorry, I'm nitpicky sometimes XD
I think this is a lot of info we shouldn't of seen.We shouldn't have seen any of it ahahahah.

As for Marathon, games change. If they want to modernize Marathon they would. I don't think they would keep with the style of 2D monsters in a 3D space. I do however think you're overthinking the correlation between Marathon and Destiny.

Now, I don't remember reading this part of the K, but someone said Bungie cannot release this new Marathon game until Bungie makes something like 375 million in revenue from Destiny. So, we will have to see if it's released in almost what.. 2014? Ehhhh... I guess that would make sense. Because Bungie would make that much revenue by then, if they sell well. (If they don't sell well, Activision will terminate the contract >_>) So a 20th anniversary release would make sense.

  • 05.22.2012 3:40 AM PDT

Quick as a razor, sharp as a bullet.

Activision can terminate the contract without penalty if Destiny doesn't sell at least 5 million units in the first six months.
This made me mad...

Summary of what we 'know' so far...
-Massively multiplayer style, sci-fantasy action shooter series codenamed Destiny with expansion packs codenamed Comet.

OP... nothing in the article said anything about MMO style play. Aside from -blam!- Extraction, where did you get this info?

When I read it on other sites (and here), it appears to be a classic FPS.

Isn't "Marathon" just a codename for another project, or am I mistaken?
We don't know. Could very well be.

Didn't Bungie renew the Marathon copyright around the time they signed with Activision?
Y'know, I think I remember that actually. And now that I think about it, codenaming one game after another game seems a bit silly. It may very well be a Marathon game, but what shape or form is left to be seen.
Like people have said already in this thread, it could be a prequel of some sorts or a game set in the same universe.

I would be ok with that.

The sites I got the info from say Massively multiplayer style. Nothing about a MMO... Where does it say 'classic FPS'?

Also if you read the OP, it says in the contract 'Massive multiplayer style'.

I thought it was 6, regardless, Halo 3 and Halo: Reach sold around 7.5 and 8, respectively, within 6 months. Both sold 6 million within 2 months.

I know it's a new IP and all, but it's Bungie, they make amazing games. And it's Activision, they have amazing marketting.

The one part I'm concerned about is Activision is able to terminate the contract after Comet#2 at any time at their discretion. Which makes me wonder if they then can do the "Activision Completion Right" which allows them to carry on the franchise and sublicense it to third parties until the development term is done. (But I don't understand all the legal stuff, and if there is an agreement that if they terminate the contract without Bungie breaching the contract, can they enact the "Activision Completion Right")

I believe this is the most interesting part of the contract, especially the part in the parentheses.

The Destiny property, planned to be a Massively-multi-player style (i.e., client based mission strucures with persistent elements), sci-fantasy, action shooter games.

No, the LA times released the Activision/Bungie contract, the one made back in March/April of 2010. It's not made up.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

I presume it means that mission progress works like other MMORPGs - each person plays through the same missions in their own time.

Yeah. A contract is a contract. It's legally binding. Activision gives Bungie a schedule, and they follow that schedule. It can be pushed back, but that would result in overage penalties for Bungie, and possibly contract termination, which would allow Activision to basically give Bungie's IP to third parties for 10 years (as I understand the contract).

Actually yeah, the contract would be vague enough for stuff to change while still being under the contract, I was just thrown off when people started quoting "persistent structures in a dynamic world".

Because why have design decisions in the contract?

Oh, common practice in the industry. You have to have your game plans basically layed out, and have a pretty good grasp on how the game is going to be at final release. If you don't, a publisher will not fund you. So there was probably A LOT of pre-production on Destiny (enough for hints of it to be in ODST).

If Bungie didn't have that stuff for Activision, Activision wouldn't have contracted with Bungie. And in the contract it lays out a little bit about the game. It's massively multi-player style, sci-fantasy action shooter. It says some other things in other sections of the contract, like what Bungie's responsibilities are, and this gives us a hint at what the game will require, like "in-game game masters". (Whatever those are)

There was probably detailed stuff about the actual game itself, in Exhibit A of the contract, but Exhibit A seems to have not been there. Which I'm glad about. It doesn't ruin the game. But Exhibit A would have probably had the concept art, the plot, the plans for the game, what they're hoping final release to be, some in-game assets probably.

like "in-game game masters". (Whatever those are)
Game masters are basically devs who play the game, who can alter it while they're playing it.

Their main functions are customer support and basically maintaining the game, "You got scammed out of all your coins? Here I'll give you them back.", "Oh there's a guy flying over there? Ban.", etc.

Although looking at the wikipedia page it doesn't necessarily have to be devs, looks like the term isn't too well defined for general use in games.

I hope the 2 year cycle doesn't mean every game Bungie pulls a "Reach" on us.

I like how Bungie released Halo 3, and supported the game for almost 2 full years. They released Reach and supported it for like 5 months.

And by support, I don't mean just DLC. I mean getting the community involved and everything, like they did with Halo 3.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

The reason that happened was because Bungie was giving the rights of Halo to 343i and they were supposed to handle Halo.

The thing about this MMO intrigues me for several reasons.

Look at WOW and how old it is. Notice how there is no WOW2 or WOW3, there are just expansion packs.

I don't think Destiny will be an MMO because of how many games are planned in that short of time.

We know Bungie is in several teams so it is safe to assume that there is already plans being set in motion for the next project, Marathon, and the current project.
