In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

We have never seen the contract Bungie had with Microsoft, so to say that Microsoft let Bungie do what they wanted with Halo is presumptuous. In fact, Bungie has said the complete opposite. We take their word for everything else, why stop now?

People seem to be freaking out about the contract between Bungie and Act. They are businessmen people, who are very successful at what they do. Bungie can handle themseleves. Unless you are one of Bungie's legal counsel, I suggest you hold opinions relating to the legal contracts to yourselves.

I am gonna see what Foman thinks.

Anyway this contract seems to be expecting a lot out of Bungie and the games are scheduled to come out much faster than previous Halo titles were.

My experience playing Cairo Station on Legendary

Am I the only user that just feels awful? This is like being told everything you're getting for you birthday a month in advance. Though you still want it, the surprise is ruined. I liked staying in the dark because Bungie would have made the reveal exciting!

Truth be told, the community still knows squat when it comes the actual game. I get what you mean in a sense, though.

This really sucks, we know all the games they are gonna make. 4 "destiny games" and a "Marathon" game.

We "know" zero games they are going to make aside from the untitled Marathon project. We know ABOUT them, but we don't know them. Even if that was a misstep in wording on your part, I'm sure you meant what it was that you said as well. We know a rough, 5-6 word definition of a kinda-sorta-subgenre-type-thing. That's next to nothing.

It's like describing Halo as "a sci-fi game centered around a plague and halos". You would think it's some sort of game set in the distant future having to do with Armageddon or God in some way. Never would you guess the plot of halo based on that description, in the same way that you cannot even begin to guess the plot of Destiny. We have ncsuDuncan's Destiny Map which can tell us possible names of places in the Destiny universe, but the relevance of them as well as the story going behind that which is the vast majority of the things we can possible "know" about a game, are hitherto unknown to you, me, and the general public at lard.

Furthermore, Destiny is still just a codename and even if it was the next game's/franchise's name, it's still yet to be known what the game is about. So even if you meant "know about", we still don't necessarily even have a definite name. Plus, you never know; Bungie could decide to change the name of the games in between and just have them under the subtitle of "Chapter 2 in the Destiny Quaternology". (I.E. First Blood -> Rambo, but throughout the whole series.) What we know about the Destiny franchise thus far is comparable to the following dialogue:

A: "Hey, Valve's next franchise of 4 games is going to be called 'Definite Infinity'."

B: "Sweet! What's it about?"

A: "Not telling."

B: "-blam!-, now the whole franchise is ruined for me! I know EVERYTHING!!!"

We know nothing but terms and conditions. When and where. Not who, what, or how. Not even all of "why".

Bungie did not usually reveal the release dates, or upcoming DLCs until quite late on, leaving it up to speculation. That is what has been lost.

As much as it does suck, it's not like everything has been ruined. We know we're getting 'something' but we don't know what that 'something' is.

As far as the game goes, we've learned nothing new.

OH GOD NO WE LOST THE SURPRISE OF RELEASE DATES! WILL SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

Really though, in todays day and age, waiting for info on release dates and info is now the exception, not the rule. We get announcements about DLC release dates before the actual game even ships all the time, so knowing a release schedule is only benefical to me since I know when to expect something that's going to extend my time in Destiny.

ISU Cyclones!

Only thing game related that's not strictly business related that's been confirmed is the "Massively oriented Action Sci-fantasy Shooter" genre the game is.

It really does leave a bad taste in your mouth though with the details. As just a fan of the game I don't want nor need to know the corporate side of it. I guess it's just the stigma that that corporate side comes with as it's the go-to part of gaming to blame for 'ruining' different games.

"Selling out, DLC nickel and diming, copying the most popular, rushing for deadlines, ect..."

As fans talking about the business side of gaming usually is done in a negative light.

So basically, Bungie/Activision's new game codenamed 'Destiny' was "made public for the first time as part of a separate lawsuit involving the Call of Duty game franchise." This is obviously big news.
At the moment, I'm more excited for Bungie's New Hawtness than Destiny.

You know, when I think about the technology in ODST and in Reach's Forgeworld, I get incredibly excited about what they are working on. Both games had their incredible "wow" moments regarding tech work that will likely be used in their persistent world of Destiny.

I'll be honest, I haven't really read much of their contract. I'm not an employee and I think it is a bit unfair to read it. It is their private contract that just unfortunately became public. The problem lies in that fact. Every developer has contracts with their publisher regarding dev time and milestones (and more). Hell, just look at how many stories have been out there regarding Star Wars Battlefront 3 and its development nightmare as it wasn't reaching milestones.

That said, I've read a lot of what people have to say on the subject and I get a lot of their concerns. I just feel its very unwarranted. Let Bungie do Bungie. They've got this and they're not looking to screw over their customers.

A 2 year development cycle, especially after seeing how magnificent ODST was with a small team and short cycle, seems an appropriate stretch of time, especially at the end of this hardware generation. After all, building the engine would take a bit of time in the beginning, but most games now are moving to a two year dev cycle. It simply is more cost effective and doesn't impede quality. With the hardware being pushed to its limits, we're not going to see the jumps in graphics/tech we did previously. For example, Mass Effect, from 2 to 3, had a shorter dev time and wasn't very much of a jump in graphics/tech and honestly, taking aside my pain regarding the ending, Mass Effect 3 was a fantastic game.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

I bet the new Marathon is what Marcus Lehto an Joe Tung are working on.

I felt sort of bad about reading the document, but then I just thought, basically it's out there, and if I'm going to be discussing it, might as well know what I'm talking about.

Yeah, I guess my worries aren't logical. There are amazing games made with short dev times, and games that have long dev times that suck. And Bungie is Bungie, they're amazing. Shouldn't worry. A guess an upside to them having the shorter dev time means more content released to keep us entertained.

I feel with CoD being released every year, it's not good. New interations feel the same, I play for the multi-player, and that's pretty solid throughout the games. Nothing game changing for Call of Duty. I feel, with what little we know about Destiny, that it will be different.

With CoD, they have 2 different game developers working on the same franchise. If one game devs iteration vastly improved on things like the graphics, while the other didn't, it would feel very much different, and the consistency of the franchise would feel very.... messed up.

But with Destiny, Bungie is the only one working on the franchise. It's not a yearly release either. (Unless you count comets) So I'm thinking we will see graphical improvements in the series, unlike CoD.

Obviously. What else would they be working on, when only like 5% of employees can work on something not related to Destiny?

Anyways, I was just wondering what if this contract leaked when it was first signed? Like back in April of 2010... Bungie would still be dark, ahahaha. Bungie will reveal Destiny when they're ready and willing.

No, you can't have it. But thanks for asking!

There really hasn't been too much revealed that isn't already being speculated on elsewhere.

Definitely blows that legal bs had to unleash contracts for public visibility, but that's what happens in a litigation driven economy. I'm still hoping we'll get a tantalizing dribble on Bungie Day.
