I bet the new Marathon is what Marcus Lehto an Joe Tung are working on.
I could be mistaken... but didn't Marcus Lehto leave Bungie last year?
BAM!

He came back.
That's what happens on BNet. You miss 3 days and a thread with important or cool information is already on page 2, never to be seen by you.

A 2 year development cycle, especially after seeing how magnificent ODST was with a small team and short cycle, seems an appropriate stretch of time, especially at the end of this hardware generation. After all, building the engine would take a bit of time in the beginning, but most games now are moving to a two year dev cycle. It simply is more cost effective and doesn't impede quality. With the hardware being pushed to its limits, we're not going to see the jumps in graphics/tech we did previously. For example, Mass Effect, from 2 to 3, had a shorter dev time and wasn't very much of a jump in graphics/tech and honestly, taking aside my pain regarding the ending, Mass Effect 3 was a fantastic game.
There is no doubt in my mind that Bungie can accomplish a 2 year release cycle, with each title being of high quality. What however concerns me is that games made over a shorter period of time place less emphasis on updates, to the point where a $60 release virtually becomes the necessary update.

As a person who enjoys discussing gameplay and providing feedback to refine a game I am eagerly awaiting the impending Destiny forums and more information. I am hopeful that Destiny will include dynamic class elements, which will require revision and balancing post-launch.

Starcraft is an example of a game with dynamic elements. However the games are built to last 5-10 years, as opposed to 2. During this time the developers employ numerous gameplay tweaks. My concern with a shorter release cycle is that Bungie will make revisions primarily through new game releases, rather than to the existing product. I would rather games were nurtured for a longer period, really allowing the community to get in stride in regards to map creation and the like.

I have faith in Bungie. Each Halo game has proven that they are not happy to sit on former success and churn out identical sequels; I also would not consider Bungie to have milked Halo - ODST and Reach would not have been made had it not been for contractual obligation.

Contracts can however be creatively constraining; 4 games, with 2 years between each, is a big ask. I hope Bungie do not slip into poor practice in managed the Destiny games and prove willing to update their games as required right up until the next title is released - and that each title is a substantial improvement, rather than a new paint job.

It was known before now that Bungie also had a small team working on something else.
I refer back to my own post on page 20 of this thread, stating that it's been known for a while that Lehto and Tung were back and weren't working on Destiny.

Does anyone have a change of pants to hand?

I was just about to sell my 360...guess I'll hang onto it for a while longer.

What does this mean for the 720 release date, too? Surely not until at least 2014, no?

I'm guessing Destiny is pretty much a competitor for Waorld of warcraft in space with aliens, and it could be epic.

However, Fall 2103 is an awful long time away though...

I know right. That's a whole 91 years away. I don't what people mean by this 'short development cycle'.

Ehhhh, not really. The contract was made in 2010, where only best guesses of when the next system would come out were. The next Xbox could come out in 2013, 2014 or 2015. I'm thinking The beginning of 2014. Around spring.

Errrr, no. Activision-Blizzard wanting to directly compete with themselves... that's dumb. I think it will be like an MMO, just much different. I don't know how to explain it. But yes, 2103 is a far ass ways away ahahahhaa. 2013 however is only about a year away.

Someone just pointed out on the GAF. Bungie banning Valve, Epic and Gearbox from developing any Destiny or Comet conversions or adaptations.

Grab out of the contract.and Licensor hereby expressly disapproves of Valve, Epic and Gearbox as potential third
party developers for Conversions (unless such third party developer should become an Activision
majority or wholly-owned studio), and Licensor cannot disapprove of the use by Activision of an
Activision majority or wholly-owned studio)

Also here's an article (the one he refers to in the thread) with some small things that we may have missed.
I found it interesting.

Weird, but, okay? Hopefully it doesn't get to that point though. Where third party developers get to make their own Destiny games, that would be so crap.

My name is Mark Mezzetta and I was a beta tester for Bungie's game Oni and Take Two's game Myth 3: The Wolf Age.

This will be an IMPORTANT read for everyone who is criticizing or have doubts about the contract, Bungie, and/or Destiny. For all the people who have little to no faith in project, PLEASE read on.

Jason Jones is leading this project like he was project lead for Marathon 1, Marathon 2, Myth 1, and Halo 1. All those games have been AAA caliber.

People are saying Destiny will be a typical Activision game which they are going to milk the series, making a game every year for 7 years (2013-2020)!

Facts: Destiny begun development back in 2007 around when Halo 3 was released. By the time the game comes out next year, it will be six years in development, well more than most games take (3-4 years). Bungie in the last year it seems has increased their staff tremendously and have more than 200 employees working on the game, well larger than most studios.

Marathon might or might not be a project they are working on currently, but if they are, it would be my guess around 5-10 people would be working on it. This is very minute number. Given Bungie's style and past, the expansions (Comets 1-4) will be worked on by a smaller team after each Destiny gets released, so majority of the 200+ employees will be focused on the next Destiny game, not Comet. This is Bungie forte, they normally have 80-90% of their staff focused on their big project while a small group work on side projects (such as Halo ODST and all the Halo DLC). Technically each game will not be one year in development, and since this game is a MMO, there probably be many game assets they have developed from 2007-2013 that won't make the cut for Destiny #1, but perhaps future iterations. In conclusion, think of it like this, 4 Destiny games will be developed in 13 years. No problems there. :)

The next thing is people are saying Bungie are in a very insecure situation because if they do not sell 5 million units in the first 6 months, they will lose their contract. This is simply not true. First of all, they OWN the IP. Even if Activision cuts ties with Bungie, Bungie can still develop any game including Destiny. The main point that needs to brought up though is, say Destiny sells 2-4 million in those six months (which is not an unrealistic figure), it is very doubtful Activision will cut ties. The fanbase of Bungie is LARGE (as we all know :)). Bungie are not unknown...they weren't unknown before Halo was created as they made strategy games of the year. Bungie will be around for a long time as they have been developing games for 21 years! Each Destiny game should realistically sell more than the past game, provided it is not a flop. No Bungie game has ever been a flop. Activision trusts Bungie, which is why they teamed up. They just had to put stipulations (even if they are unrealistic) to terminate just in case they for whatever reason have to cut ties (even if it has nothing to do with Bungie). If I were a betting man, if for whatever reason Destiny #1 doesn't meet the 5 million mark (which it should), Activision will still be publishing future Destiny games.

People and news site believe Destiny #1 is either a Xbox 360 exclusive or a time based release. This could very well not be true. Bungie mentions in contract they will evaluate if it is feasible to develop a Playstation 3 version. They gave a date by when they have to make that decision. Good news people, they have been hiring Playstation engineers AFTER they had to make the decision, so it is VERY likely they are working on a Playstation version. At the time contract was made, they were finishing up their fifth Xbox game. They have never made a Playstation game and had a small number if any Playstations engineers on their team. This is why contract is written like that, just to be safe if they don't feel like they could do it. The fact is they are still hiring Playstation engineers is a good sign for Sony fans. And who knows, they can release the game for both systems simultaneously. Sure it says 2014 for Playstation version, but it also mentions there are no requirements to meet a 2013 date. I take it as there is a chance it will be simultaneously released for both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 next year. We just have to wait and see.

Believe in Bungie, they will deliver the goods.

NOT INTO THE LONG GRASS!

So we need a 90+ review score to get a brilliant game

But we need it to sell less than 5 million in six months to free Bungie from Activision's grasp

I agree with many of your points. And it is definitely comforting to know Jason Jones is back as project lead. I feel that many gamers just think in terms of studios and developer teams and forget that it's the people that make a studio great--project lead generally being most important of them all. However, I'm still a bit nervous about some of the elements of the contract as it relates to Bungie, their games, and the industry abroad.

I'm not sure how I feel about a two year cycle with planned downloadable content. Of course, I have no idea what the ultimate nature of Bungie's project is, nor do I know Bungie's goals for the future, but two years seems just a little short too me.

At least we know that there's still in fact a project in the works for Bungie... or maybe this was done on purpose; as it would bring attention towards Bungie's project as this lawsuit is somewhat in the public eye. So this how Activision is going to start marketing... through coverage of legal matters. Way to stay classy. *All speculation BTW... but yes, Acti would do such a thing.*

not likely they would have suggested the defense to check out the contract for a ball park restitution. at least you're thinking outside the box though :)
