Maybe a toggle option like Fallout?Unfortunately this won't work. Games are either designed to play from a third person perspective, or from a first person perspective. It's sorta mutually exclusive.
I mean, in Mario games, there's an option to look around the area from Mario's perspective, but if they were to turn that into more of an option for gameplay than just a feature to help the player examine the environment, nobody would use it as the game would be half unplayble. Complex Platform Jumping is that much more hard when you restrict the user's visual information like that.
Likewise, if a game is designed predominantly for the first person perspective, it's not going to take advantage of the cool things you can do with the third person perspective. Sending a large swarm of enemies to mob and flank the player might work in a third person environment as you can see all your enemies at once and deal with them accordingly, but in a first person environment (especially since you lack the mobillity that most third person games provide), the fight is going to be horrifically unfair for you.
The two are mutually exclusive see? The option to swap between the two is nice, but at the end of the day, the game is catered to one or the other, not both.
And it 3rd person ruins immersion. And this is untrue. I have been immersed in many third person games. Immersion isn't better in first person, it's just easier, just as it's easier to make a cake from Cake Mix than from scratch. You can immerse your players in a third person environment just as well, it just takes a ton of extra work, but if the gameplay benefits more from a third person perspective than a first person perspective, then isn't that worth the extra work?
...I may or may not have been writing a large discussion thread about this topic prior to this announcement.
