The Joyeuse IP Formula

The partnership with Activision is a little scary, yes. But I would highly recommend that people read those leaked court documents before freaking out.

The situation with Marathon is that Bungie could have kept doing Marathon games instead of moving on to Myth, Oni, and Halo. They had an established fanbase for Marathon and it would have likely done well. But now that Marathon has rested for a while, I don't believe that it would be a cardinal sin to bring it back in this new decade.

Comparing SWOTOR to Bungie's MMO-esque IP is a little silly. SWOTOR is set in an already established universe for a genre that's been beaten silly by WoW and its clones. If we're talking FPS, then it certainly won't be a 1,2,3,4 rotation that you're stuck with in WoW.

We need to remember that this universe has been in development since the end of Halo 3. Activision didn't force Mr. Jones to sign that contract. They were very clear about their terms with their publisher: You give us money to make a game, we keep the rights, you keep the publisher's cut.

Don't get me wrong, I totally understand where people are coming from when they say that Bungie is going to get swallowed by Activision. I'm scared, too! Out of that fear, I'm ready to tell Bungie what's up the moment they start treating their customers badly.

I called Bioware out on their -blam!- and I have no problem doing it to Bungie. I care enough for the company, the friends I have that work there, and the games they make to not mince words.

If you are a Bungie fan that cares, you will call Bungie out on their -blam!-.

We don't know what's happening quite yet. Right now, all we can do is voice our concerns about their publisher. We still don't know -blam!- about the game. I would highly suggest that we all calm down over this and approach it in a more mature manner, rather than crying out, "the end is nigh!" when we don't have a lot of context over the term "MMO" when it comes to Bungie-- a developer that's never made an MMO by any means.

I concur 100%.

The MMO aspect of Destiny means that it will be a persistent FPS, meaning the world will continue while the player is not playing (maybe something along the lines of Dust).

God, you need to be more obvious. There are people that actually sound that stupid, OP.

Oh, the Marathon game thing is real. Then you're probably serious aren't you? There's no reason to connect an FPS with MMO elements to a bad MMO with poor management of developer resources.

What I don't like is the rate at which they will be releasing content. They aren't being given enough time to make a truly great game from their heart.

It's like a gigantic snowball, rolling down a mountain, eating kids on the way.

I trust Bungie will mix it up. It may be along the lines of a MMO but completely different, with their own twist on it.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

All of the Halo games (1, 2, 3, Reach) were released in about a 3 year cycle. Bungie admitted that they rushed Halo 2, they talked about cut-scenes that they didn't have enough time for and gameplay that they could of improved. Bungie has grown much larger since then but it's perfectly reasonable to be nervous about them releasing a new Destiny game every 2 years.

Yes Costco. I need a 50lb bag...I mean sack of sugar.

LOUD NOISES!!!!

But seriously, everyone needs to stop speculating on something Bungie has released zero information on. Sure, the contract came out because of a court case, but has Bungie released any info to us yet? NO. Have they said we are doing X, Y, Z? NO. Bungie will give us the goods when they are ready, and I'm content with that.

I don't see the point in freaking about the shorter dev cycles. A ton of prep work has gone into this universe. Bungie is expanding, not downsizing. I am not denying two years is a short cycle, but I think that Bungie is capable of pulling this off. I believe they have the man power and the will to do so.

  • 05.23.2012 10:10 PM PDT

People have read way too far into this contract situation.

I don't see them having very much success. Especially with an MMO

Enjoy your death by 2020, Bungie. Hope it was worth the money. Don't worry, I'll remember you by your -blam!- games, and not the 2 or 3 you actually did okay on.

I don't think I have to tell you that drawing similarities and then making a quick conclusion about a game you actually know nothing about is just plain dumb. Unless you count knowing less than half about the game as 'knowing what you're talking about'.

I must agree with others here, any remake of marathon would be a super improvment. Now its just a wait and see.

My spoon isn't the only thing that's too big

I think it's obviously weak that a new "universe" isn't being created, but what can I say? If their final product is good, I'll be more likely to play/buy it, and if not, then I won't.

  • 05.24.2012 8:12 AM PDT

Bungie made FPS's what they are today. Yeah they beat the horse dead and then some with Halo and Reach was terrible but the fact remains that up until Halo 3 and into ODST they were defining the modern FPS.

Console MMO's are pretty much non existent, so who knows maybe this is the next genre Bungie has on their "Change forever" list.

  • 05.24.2012 9:16 AM PDT

Okay.. so i've been away for 2 weeks, I come back and Bungie is making a new marathon game? Yikes.

I think that if Bungie's new game was subscription based, that detail would have been revealed in the Bungie/Activision document about how they'd split the subscription revenue.

Just my thoughts on this.

Seems like a, "I don't like change" attitude to me. It's sad you've been here for so long and yet you have no faith in Bungie. You don't deserve your title and when Bungie's IP kicks ass, which it will because Bungie kicks ass, you'll feel like a real idiot. Honestly man, I would expect what you just posted to have come from an ordinary member like me.

I don't know what Bungie plans, so I won't assume anything, but just from reading this post alone, I wouldn't consider this to be a "change". Bungie may just be doing what every other developer is doing, which is not good. We've all respected Bungie for being unique, and doing things their own way.

Bungie may be changing, but as a whole industry, they may just be like the others now. So I guess the only thing that's changing, is that there is no change anymore.

I don't have the right to judge Bungie as of now, I'd definitely like to play their game first.

The only thing that concerns me is the roll out date schedule. Bungie should be free to take the time to make the games as amazing as they can and should not be held to some dumb release schedule like CoD.
