Subject: Why do people have a problem with a new Marathon game?

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

People are complaining? What else is new?

Though at only 5% of Bungie's manpower working on it I don't imagine it coming out any time soon or if it does it'll be something smallish.

I'm looking forward to get to experience it, i was too young when it came out.

Never Played Marathon but really want to. As long as it isn't a horror game

  • 05.22.2012 7:15 PM PDT

Because those people never played Marathon before. That, or they just never grasped the true image that classic projects.

For Carnage, Apply Within.

I have returned from the Untamed Lands. MOAP is dead.

There's really no room for more story when the universe itself has ended.

It's like the 90's version of Halo. It has a lot of paralells. There just tends to be a lot more "puzzle solving" in Marathon. Perhaps that's because of the old map designs just being confusing.

My future is certain, I will one day fly away. All because I am saved from the penalty of sin. I know he lives.

I haven't heard that many people complaining, but from what i have heard, is that they are afraid that it is going to be a remake of the game, grant it most people that know about it so far where only 4 when the first marathon came out, and may have not ever touch it.

But from what i'm gathering is that people are afraid of a remake.

Unless I see a solid source, the idea that Bungie is making a next generation Marathon game is still really just wishful thinking, even conjecture. The contract clearly states that development on a Marathon prototype won't take place unless they make $375 million.

Personally, the original marathon games were great for their time and another sequel is absolutely unnecessary, new technology can't do Marathon any more justice than what's been done already.

But the meat of their contract lies in Destiny and its planned sequels.

Some people just didn't like it, I guess...

As for me I'm very excited!! I can't wait to play the new Marathon, and Destiny!

Roll the dice, try again.

I have no problem. It would be awesome to play that game again :)

Keep in mind that the contract specifies that a Marathon prototype will not be funded or developed until they have achieved $375 million from Destiny, so depending on how well it sells early on, we won't even see a hint of a marathon game until at least 5 years from now, realistically speaking.

I'd erase my seven times table to see a marathon reboot.

I really want BUNGiE to succeed with Destiny and make bukuloads of money with selling an enormous amount of copies of the game, but I kind of want to see BUNGiE not reach that mark because if they do or even exceed it then a Marathon game comes out and that would suck. really I enjoy the Marathon TRILOGY, but leave it as is no more games.

Why does Activision wish to follow George Lucas' steps and recreate a trilogy when the original was just badass?
I hope BUNGiE succeeds with Destiny I really do, but I really wish they rework the contract to nix the Marathon revamp game out of it.

Aesthetically, it probably would be cool to see, but my major concern is with the story...

15+ YEAR OLD SPOILERS

At the end of Marathon trilogy, the character you play can travel to any point in time in any timeline at will. He can essentially craft universal events in any way he sees fit, and even if he fails, he can try again an infinite amount of times until he gets the desired result.

You could build a game around that mechanic, but knowing he is basically invincible takes any sense of urgency or danger out of the game. He has reached the pinnacle of his existence, so there isn't really anywhere compelling left to go.

nb4prequel

I've never played any other Bungie game other than Reach. Technically I played CE but it was the remake, I havent played H2, H3, or ODST. I tried ODST but I am so used to sprint the pace of the game kills me. Same thing happened when i tried Durandal's demo. I like old school games, but for fps old games i need to play them on a pc so i can speed them up.

Well, 5% is 10 people. That's more than enough to make a game.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

People say Bungie's beating the dead horse, which isn't true. It's been over 10 years since the last Marathon, and I think a minor revamp is needed.

I'm kinda excited to see the old pixelated 2D enemies as high def 3D models.

yea thing is... the story itself had ended billions of years later after the events of infinity.

As of now, there's nothing that says this is actually a Marathon game (i.e. a game in Bungie's Marathon universe). The project could be code named "Marathon" for any number of reasons, including the possibility of intentionally misleading people.

There is a secondary Bungie project (headed by Marcus Lehto) that has been declared as a new IP (see Lehto's blog for more info). This seems to be a separate project, however, as the Bungie/Activision contract is dated April 16, 2010, which was well before Lehto left Bungie (and certainly, before his new project started).

This indicates that the "Marathon" project is actually something separate. In which case it could be any number of things. Including a game set in the Marathon universe. Which could be anything from a prequel to a sequel, an alternate timeline, or even a reboot. Maybe they're planning on completely re-invisioning the Marathon universe with a reboot for the 20th Anniversary. Who knows? The possibilities are endless.

Information on this "Marathon" game will probably be scarce for some time though, since the focus is on the game to be released in 2013. So, for now, we wait - as the passing time slowly reveals Bungie's future, and our own. I know what I'll be playing next year. I can barely wait.

It's only 5% tops of their studio. I haven't heard any complaints at all.

Meh.

They could tell a story of times before that happened, since there was a very, very large time gap between the last level of Infinity and the final screen image. And, although I'm not very familiar with it, Marathon Eternal's story (a third party scenario) did something with Marathon's story after Infinity.
