Update: Due to Subnova's shunning of the community in general, everyone who used to chat at irc.subnova.com now chats at irc.bungie.org. You'll see a lot more friendly people if you connect to irc.bungie.org instead of subnova. More info to come later.
That's right! Now you can chat with your 7th Column buddies- in realtime! If you already know IRC, hop along over to irc.subnova.com and join #7thColumn.
Not familiar with IRC? No problem! I present to you:
Shishka’s Handy-Dandy IRC Guide
What is IRC?
Internet Relay Chat is a time honored chat system that let’s users join rooms (known in IRC as “Channels”), chat with each other, private message each other, and send/receive files.
How do I log in to SubnovaIRC?
First, you need to download an IRC client application with which to connect. These are easy to find. The most popular applications out there are mIRC (http://www.mirc.com) for Windows users and IRCle (http://www.ircle.com) for Mac users. If you don't want to or cannot download an application to connect with, Subnova has a browser-friendly java IRC client available here: http://javairc.subnova.com/?join=7thColumn. This is handy if you just want to visit briefly, but a regular will want to download a real client.
Once you’ve downloaded and installed an IRC client, you’re ready to connect to SubnovaIRC! You can choose to set your client application to connect to SubnovaIRC (refer to the instructions that are provided with your client), or you can just click the following link:
irc://irc.subnova.com
How do I register my nickname?
Be sure to give yourself a nickname! This can be done in the options menus of your irc program. Or, if you wish to change your nickname manually, you can do so by typing this command into the channel:
/nick [nickname]
[nickname], of course, is the nickname you wish to use.
Once you have your preferred nick, you can register it so people can’t take it while you’re gone. To do so, you need to message Nickserv, one of the server bots that watches IRC from the shadows. To register, all you have to do is type the following into the chatline and hit enter:
/msg nickserv register [password] [email_address]
[password] is the password you want to use to identify yourself with, and [email_address] is the address at which you receive e-mail. Once your account is registered, you need to identify yourself to prove that you’re the owner of your nickname. To do so, type
/msg nickserv identify [password]
Remember: You have to identify every time you log in! When you become familiar with IRC, you’ll find most applications have a means with which you can do this automatically.
w do I chat?
To chat with us on SubnovaIRC, you need to come to the official 7th Column chatroom. Once you’re connected to the server, simply type
/join #7thColumn
And a new window should pop up, full of happy chatty users!
What are the Rules for #7thColumn?
1. No excessive profanity.
2. No piracy
3. No spamming or flooding
4. No illegal activity
5. No discussion about illegal activity
6. No posting of adult material
7. Basically, follow all the rules of the Bungie.Net forums.
Can I Have My Own Channel so My 7th Column Chapter can Chat Together?
Of course! Simply type:
/join #Channel
Just replace “Channel” with what you want to have your chatroom called. For example, #Webmaster, #MyRoom, or #shishkassupacoolchapterclubpartyhouse
Can I Register My Own Channel?
Absolutely. Simply send a message to chanserv:
/msg chanserv [register] #channel [password] [description]
And be sure to familiarize yourself with Chanserv’s other functions by looking in the help files:
/msg chanserv [help]
What are some basic IRC commands that are good to know?
/msg [username] – Send a private message to [username]
/join #channel – Joins a channel called #channel
/whois [nickname] – performs a whois function on the user called [nickname], this will bring up their username, hostname, and other channels they are currently in.
/kick #channel [nickname] – Kicks the user [nickname] from the channel #channel (Note: Only works when you have operator or half-operator privileges in a channel.
/mode #channel +b n!u@h – Used to ban a user. n!u@h is short for nickname!user@host. For example, if I want to ban a user named JerkFacedIdjit, first I find out their user name and host by typing /whois JerkFacedIdjit, which tells me this:
JerkFacedIdjit is ~dumbkopf@123address.jackass.com
Now, it’s up to me to decide how to ban the user. I can ban by nickname, hostname, username, or a combination of the three. If you want to ban the IP address (hostname), for example, you would type:
/mode #channel +b *!*@123address.jackass.com
Or just his nickname:
/mode #channel +b JerkFacedIdjit!*@*
You get the idea. Remember, you can only ban in channels that you have operator privs in.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask a user on the IRC channel, or message me. Or, you can just post in this thread. Enjoy!
