Subject: Political/Religious discussion currently prohibited in groups

This is the prompt users receive prior to creating a group.

Important information about creating groups!

Before creating a group, you should familiarize yourself with the community of the 7th Column. Basically, the 7th Column is made up of fan run groups that usually represent collections of players that are local to each other (although there are exceptions). Inappropriate names, mottos, or descriptions are not allowed - don't violate the code of conduct! The 7th Column is the way you can carve out your own niche in the Bungie community and run it yourself - but in doing so, you must deal with all the issues of running such a group yourself. Bungie will not mediate personal disputes, and the public forum moderators have no authority or visiblity to your groups either. Please note that you cannot create a group until your account has been active for at least 14 days.

This is an excerpt from the Code of Conduct.

The End

‘The conscious is cancerous if allowed to linger’

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

I really do miss the old CoC; it was well-written, humorous and informative. The current one feels as though it is appealing to the lowest common denominator ("stuff") and is very unclear, as "sucks" is not an obvious synonym for prohibited.

Probably just something Bungie overlooked? I don't see how it would be a problem in private groups, of all things.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

That's weird. I'm sure they just mean follow the obvious rules. Because, well, there are entire groups with huge memberbases about Politics and Religion.

READ IT.

I won the Star. With this on Week 18.

Wow... you gave up being a ninja eh?

And yeah, wow... that list looks like it was done by a teenager and not... Achronos or Sawnose?

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Under a technicality but it's not something that's enforced.

  • 05.25.2012 4:04 AM PDT

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Yeah but who is going to enforce it. Unless people do something illegal, post lots of NSFW material, or launch spam attacks, usually the webteam does not get involved.

How would they find out in private groups?

  • 05.25.2012 4:16 AM PDT

You could break 4 rules in groups without a problem (maybe). I guess the CoC is more applicable towards the public forums. I don't see it as being too much of a problem, seeing as the CoC is for asking you to use common sense and logic when posting for the most part, something it shouldn't even have to ask of you.

Look, sometimes stuff just, like, sucks, ya know?!

Yeah, don't expect much to happen about this one.

  • 05.25.2012 8:24 AM PDT

That would be quite a bit of private group discussion to keep up with.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I think this is a result of the new, simple rules. They made the main forum rules as short and sweet and tell people to go to the COC for specifics. Even though politics and religion are prohibited by the main forum rules, they probably didn't want anyone to look in the COC and not do it.

That said, that section of the COC should be changed, since it mixes things you can do in groups with things that you cannot. It should be divided into two sections to remove the ambiguity.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

One thing I think we would all like to know: to all the people in those kinds of groups, will they be warned? Banned? Or just forced to leave the group(s)?

  • 05.25.2012 9:09 AM PDT

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

Refer to all religious and political discussions as "personal disputes" and you'll be golden. Maybe.

If this is the state of my art, then I secede.

Read it wrong, disregard this.

I think it is talking about the descriptions/mottos of the groups.

Even so, it's not like anyone cares or is complaining about these private groups that violate the code of conduct, so why bring it up?

According to the current Code of Conduct:

1) They are clearly not permitted; and
2) Discourage new users from making groups to discuss politics and religion.

I'm looking to check whether this is an error and if it isn't, how it affects or will affect current groups engaging in such discussion.

How would they find out in private groups?

Odd question. Simply put, by going into the group.
Though they could use the database more more complex queries, using them as methods to automatically detect groups that could potentially be in violation of the ToU/CoC - sort of a "flag" for someone to investigate.

Either way, it wouldn't take much effort. Unless by "they" you mean the moderators, in which case I believe they would only know if they were in the group or could openly join it.

As for the topic, it generally seems like an error created when the CoC changed. I've normally seen encouragement from Bungie employees on the idea of using private groups to discuss topics that aren't permissible to discuss on the main forums. Perhaps it does deserve a clarification or change, though.

I'm sure Bungie just means that political and religious discussions are off limits in the main forums; I don't see why they'd want to enforce the rule in groups.

Isn't there someone we can message about this?

  • 05.25.2012 10:48 AM PDT

Jack of all trades, master of none.

To be honest no-one really cares all that much.

It's kind of like the law for minimum age for legal alcohol consumption (whatever it may be in your country/state).

Whilst in public, the law should be respected and is generally enforced. However, whilst in the comfort of your own home, whilst the rule still stands, no-one minds, along as you stay safe.

So, as long as discussion doesn't spill onto the main forums, or start to break come of the more serious Code Of Conduct, no-one is all that btohered.

At least, that's what I think.
