I don't want squad commands, thats not Halo. Just have them run around like the marines do, except they kick ass

It woulld be kind of cool if they helped you get past certain points.

For example a Spartan stays on the roof and snipes but only bigger targets.

This way you get kills and help at the same time, while on higher diffuculties they themselves need help or cant help cause there fighting something else.

Col Sanders 37- Would you like that original or extra crispy?

I hope you choke on my popcorn chicken!

Eat my crispy strips biotch!

Well for all those people who did not read the books as it was said before bungie has a knack for catching people up. All it takes is a cut-scene to explain how they survived and just have them tell where they were during Halo 2. I think the spartans will show up in an epic final battle with tons of covenant and a kick ass Spartan team! If not I would be pretty disapointed to find out that a good side story would be put to waste.

I don't really think so. In the manual, it says that the Master Chief is that last spartan, and if there are others then it would confuse people woh haven't read the boosk. But you knever know, Bungie could have something up there sleeve.

I don't know why this is hard for people to get, but- when that manual was written, in the Halo universe, it was THOUGHT that MC was the last Spartan- we didn't find out that he wasn't until First Strike, which happened AFTER the events of Halo CE.

I mean, for real people. If I am reading a manual for a video game about Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring, and it is like, Gandalf is dead. And then I play Two Towers, the sequel, and Gandalf shows up, I'm not going to be like "OMG WTF THEY SAID HE WAS DEAD!!!11!!!"

It's called a sequential storyline. Yeesh.

Also, for the people that say the books aren't related- how does that make sense? The books DRIVE the storyline to the games. Fall of Reach sets up all the events for Halo CE- MC being the "last" Spartan, Cortana leading them to the Halo because of an artifact that was found, the makings of the Human-Covenant war. Were you still able to understand Halo CE without reading Fall of Reach?? My guess is that you were- why? Because Bungie knows how to tell a good story, and can help 1)catch people up, or 2)cleverly fill in the gaps.

Likewise, for Halo 2, the prophets and grunts, as well as High Charity were all introduced in First Strike- heck, the end of the book leads straight into Halo 2, and helps give major clues as to the relationship between Tartarus and Truth. Were you still able to understand Halo 2? Yup.

As for whether or not Spartans will show up in Halo 3- I think you can count on it. I'm looking for Bungie to heavily include co-op as part of the main storyline, which will probably be a few missions with the remaining Spartans. I mean, how can the Spartans not be there? This is where the final showdown is going on- why would they be anywhere else? And no, this won't be confusing- Bungie can catch up non-readers in a few handy lines of dialogue in a cut scene. Imagine that :)

I never said there wasn't gonig to be another spartan, I actually believe there will be. Plus, in this IGN Article, in paragraph 9, it says, "Master Chief stops walking and the camera lowers, pointing up at one of two remaining Spartan soldiers, giving you the chance to eye all of the incredible detail from the new, next-generation super soldier." I don't know if this is correct though, could have been a mistake.

To my knowledge the books are in no way binding on the storyline of Halo 3. They are a possibility, and it seems that Eric Nylund seems to have some insider info on the general Halo story, but all in all the books stand on their own.

Personally I would like to see Will, Fred, Linda, and especially Kelly in Halo 3. I would like to find out what Dr. Halsey is up to, so that means playing as Kelly.

It would drastically change the gameplay, but I think it would be cool if you could command the others Spartans like Rainbow Six. Some squad-based gameplay with other Spartans?! Sign me up!

personally squad based would toatally ruin halo for me cause i suck at squad based and id take my h3 disk and use it as toilet paper to show my disgust about that

If there's going to be 4-player co-op why make all the charecters be Master cheif? Each player could be a diffrent spartan with the first player The Cheif. And if you're playing 3-player or 2-player co-op or single player campaign the other spartans could be AI'S like the marines.

You would deffinatly need to read the books to understand who the other spartans are. Or maby a 2 min cut scene would do

they could easily explain the spartans in a cut scene and there are many references to the books in the game like when the admiral saysthe fleet that attacked reach was 50 times bigger. and in halo 1 in the first cutscene it metions them making the jump from reach and the mac guns.

Quick question for all......why werent the other Spartans in Halo 2? I totally agree that the books and game tie in, but if thats the case, why weren't Fred, Will and Linda and to a lesser extent Kelly, in the 2nd game? I think it would be kick ass to tie them into the games story line, but I have a feeling that Bungie will save that for the next book, and not the game. If they were to include them they would have been on the Cairo Station at the start of the 2nd game with the Chief. The easiest way to tie them in would be to have Kelly and and the Dr return. Let me know what you think.....

At the end of Fall of REACH MC believes that he is the last Spartan because he watched REACH being partially glassed, but in every other glassing the Covenant did not stop once they began. That is why MC believes that he is the last Spartan. When the Pillar of Autumn had to follow the Cole Protocol he never saw that the Covenant stopped glassing and went after the survivers because they had something that they concidered "holy" and "sacred." When Halo 2 was made there were 5 Spartans remaining, Fred, Will, Linda, Kelly, and MC (John). Maybe in Halo 2 they were somewhere else on the Cairo station and you never saw them. Then when all hope was lost that they could save the Super MAC gun than the CO ordered the Spatans somewhere else on Earth while In Amber Clad and MC where chasing the covenant ship. In Halo 3 maybe they run into each other and kick some butt together. ][-][ //-\\ ][_ (()) 3

It's a weird one.

I mean, in Halo CE John is referred to as the last of his kind. In fact, as everybody who's read the books knows, he's also subject to alot of suspicion and prejudice at the hands of his marine CO; he calls him a "freak" (I liked this touch)

Now, in Halo 2 John KNOWS some of his teammates are alive. Yet for the people who haven't read the books there is no indication whatsoever that anything has changed. As far as they're concerned John is still the LAST Spartan.

Bungie have thus painted themselves into an awkward corner.

Now, like a few here are saying, I'd agree they could reveal surviving Spartan soldiers if they wanted. That said, consider the explaining such a reveal would need in order to make sense to those who have read NONE of the books. To such people, it might look very much like Bungie are clutching at straws rather than truly enrichening their story for a grand finale.

Bungie must know this, so if they are planning on doing it they've probably got the dynamics of their introduction and role in the game worked out. I would say, with the exception of Kelly, their role should be...well...NOTHING. The Spartans should die except for John. This could be achieved by briefly explaining their survival before pitting them on a mission that we don't see except in cut-scenes at the end of each level. Obviously their mission would be somehow integral to the mission we play as John 117. At some point...basically....they should bite the dust, leaving John to finish the fight on his own once more. That's just my opinion.

Kelly....hmmm.....well a little different.

Two ways of doing this.

1) Explain the whole thing with Halsey and introduce her missions for Halsey into the 3rd Halo game as playable missions.

2) Refer to her in an opaque fashion and get Nylund to write a book about her adventure with Halsey (come to think of it..... this could also apply to the other Spartans)

Whatever happens Bungie must have had a lot of thinking to do about these matters. Particularly if we are to take Frankie's words as accurate:

"You won't just finish one fight. You'll finish every fight you started at the begininng of Halo 1" (H3 Documentary)

So... good post man. This is gonna be interesting.

Finally, on the subject of squad based action, it would horrify and repulse me. That's just an opinion...but one strongly felt.

Bungie has not been all that true to the books they have picked wht they want and left the rest but i think that having spartans in the big battle (From the doco) and that only the spartans survive the gravemind (see halo 3 trailer ark)

i'm almost certain that the books indeed relate to the story of the games, they just add more background info to the plot. I'm guessing that if no other spartan is included, kelly will be there to explain the whole dr. halsey mission. Fred, Will, and Linda will also probably show up.
Brain wave, maybe each spartan will have different abilities based on their book equivalents (accurate linda, fast kelly, stronger melee attack will)

Bungie is excellent at catchup. They also need to explain in the books why it STILL looks like MC is the last spartan if he rescued Fred, Will, and Linda. They also need a scene for kelly on dr. halsey's mission. I think bungie can pull it off
