I wouldn't mind there being a sort of thumbs up feature. It could also cut down on simple quotes with nothing to add.

I just saw a green monkey nut shot a small tan lizard(?) in a gunny sack.

Originally, I was all for it.

After seeing it on Waypoint however, no. All it does it to bring people who'll post some sarcastic remark (usually off-topic) in the hopes of getting likes. Discussion quality goes down from there.
How the community of immature little kids on Waypoint handle features is no way to judge how this community will do so.

You say that like there isn't a community of immature little kids here...

Did I? I meant to say it like the community of them over there is much larger (both in number and percentage) from what I've seen than the one over here and that because of this differentiation in size, the comparison of the communities as far as how they handle possibly abused features like "liking".

I have been on many other forums, all of which had this feature. Trust me, those forums absolutely sucked!
And those forums are clearly populated by the same people as inhabit this forum, so it will be handled in the exact same way here! Your logic is astounding!

I vote no. Replying and quoting is a much better way of saying your opinion.

On the other hand, if they make it so that you can only give a specific amount of likes per day, then that'll be ok.

We don't need another Waypoint... I spent a total of 10 hours removing my Thanks for the past few days. So many Thanks when a reply could have been better. I now have 91 compared to the 320+ that I used to have. I only left my Thanks for the long and detailed CE posts, for the witty posts, and for the memorable topics that I posted in.

[...] A person's post may be thumbed down because they share a different view of a topic.
That being that they dislike or disagree with the the post. That is not a problem.

Posted by: LordMonkey
For example (and only for example) I share a different thought of the 'bloom' mechanic in Reach's gameplay as opposed to others in the forums. Someone else may disagree with my view, and maybe we'll have a discuss/argument about it, and that is what makes the thread. If I were to express my thoughts on the bloom mechanic, no matter what I do to try to convince the audience, I will most likely get thumbed down by people too ignorant or foolish to understand why.
Or perhaps it will be thumbed down because they really do disagree with what you've written. So then maybe it is you who is the ignorant and foolish one, but it is also you who is arrogant and self-righteous enough to believe that your post is somehow more "correct" than what others have posted.

Posted by: LordMonkey
Especially in the case of a post getting too much "thumbs down" becomes hidden doesn't mean a post shouldn't be read. The report system we have now is nearly perfect. Too many reports of something being inappropriate, then it is hidden, and eventually dealt with by a moderator. If there is a unsafe link, or very disrepectful post, then it gets hidden so no one is hurt by it. But to have a post be hidden just because people disagree is juvenile as to plugging my ears and yelling, "I can't hear you."
I somewhat disagree. If a number of people have disliked something to the point where it could be hidden, then perhaps there is a consensus amongst the participants that it's a useless, irrelevant, or unhelpful comment to make, thus it's probably helpful to the reader for the site to hide/fade/remove it. However, I would be against completely hiding it from view. That should probably only happen when the content violates the set rules.

I'm all for a thumbs up button becuase you can either like it and express it through a simple click of a button, don't and move on with your life, or choose to discuss as to why and contribute to the conversation.
You could also dislike it through a simple click of a button, not dislike it and move on with your life, or choose to discuss why you dislike it and contribute to the conversation that way.

Fixed.

If the likes were toggable (automatically hidden by default for op) and they could be disabled completely from the settings, that would make them acceptable.

For me to even browse Waypoint, and to avoid seeing the cursed Thanks, I had to resort to extreme measures with Stylebot to hide most of it.

It'd be much better than people quoting posts they like without comment. I vote for a +1 feature!
