In First Strike the Spartans (I think) recovered some sort of crystal which could supposedly bend space and time. I think anyone who read it would have assumed it was Forerunner. One of the characters might have even mentioned it. I don't remember.
I was just thinking, how do we know if it's actually Forerunner? It could be Precursor, it could be some sort of natural formation, or even the creation of some unknown species perhaps linking to parts of the Halo Universe we still haven't seen. What do you think?

I feel like the inclusion of that damn crystal didn't mean a damn thing in the long run of Halo canon.

It was kinda only used as a plot device for First Strike and then it was never ever mentioned ever again. It wasn't even significant since we never learned it's purpose.

Pretty much this. I think it was just a story mechanism to allow Nylund to show how much the Covenant revere anything and everything Forerunner. Such as when the two Mgalekgolo start firing on the Spartans and Dr Halsey with the crystal. Both the Hunters are immediately killed by their allies because it is of Forerunner origin and they need it intact
Then again maybe he had writers block or something.
All in all, I doubt it was anything important.

It might have been a... what was it again? Slipspace flake? I think that was mentioned in Cryptum.

BERTOLLI!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think there is a way to tell if its Forerunner or Precursor, I think one of the Marines destroyed it right?

They probably threw it in thinking they might use it later, but never did.

Conjecture says it could be a slipspace flake but it's unlikely. All slipspace flakes do is speed up travel in slipsace, they don't bend time and space in the way the crystal does.

Yeah, that ODST Locklear destroyed it as a revenge for having lost that Pilot chick, whose name I can't remember. Polansky, I believe.

Too bad he died.
