So that it would have a long-lasting appeal to fans such as Halo 3 did... better campaign, a different art direction, multiplayer re-worked, new economic system, better forge, and to simplify and reduce the # of playlists. I don't know:

Or is this beating off a dead horse?

Ohai, I'm Loscocco (pronounced Loss-cocoa). I'm a college student (computer science major), 3D animator, and long-time Halo player.

If its multiplayer wasn't so driven by inconsistency/randomness.

Make it Halo 3.5. When people buy into a long running franchise it's because they like the core game design and mechanics. With Reach i feel Bungie tried to reinvent the wheel, when all that was needed was a tyre change.

Hanger one I just shredded with the SMGs until ammo was out and I just threw 'nades like a boss while BRing.

My experience playing Cairo Station on Legendary

If bloom wasn't added, the game may have been a little better. As well, of AAs were drop-spawn weapons. (Sprint MAYBE being an always)

I disagree. I think if it were added CORRECTLY the game would have been better. But the game could definitely use it since it was a great idea.

I'd say Art Style. Halo 3's was just so much better I think.

TU Reach works just fine on all accounts and, given that you don't have to have all AAs in every game, the overall variety of them works fine in casual games while competitive ones work well with either sprint or faster movement speed.

To make the game more appealing, Matchmaking should have been tweaked to have ranked and social again. One big social list, and one ranked playlist under the guise of "Arena" didn't work too well. People like showing off skill in Halo so making "social" and "Arena" instead of "Competitive", "Arena" and "Community" would have been better.

I think having a bunch of different ranked playlists (such as one for Slayer, one for Objective, and one for MLG) while keeping your highest division rank visible at all times would have kept people interested too.

You're beating a dead horse. The only thing we can do now is abandon this horrid abomination to the winds and hope halo 4 is a step or two up from where we are now.

I lovez me some Halo Reach!

Keep in mind that there was much less competition when Halo 3 was in it's prime than during Reach's life cycle. I find this game to be very fun with a group of friends.

lolNo

Gears, ME 1 and 2, Assassins Creed, THREE CoDs, Left 4 Dead, Battlefield, Fable, etc etc I can keep going if you want. Halo 3 had nearly 4 years of competition, yet it still managed to sit on it's throne until Reach came around.

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

Actually Halo 4 is a step or 2 below Reach. "Errr... How do you know you haven't even played it?" Because I know how to use Google...

Mass Effect had no multiplayer, thus it faded off the map just like Bioshock even though people still played it frequently. Same with AC and Fable. Halo: Reach faces all those other games plus their later, more popular iterations. Halo 3 did not have 4 years of real competition whatsoever.

The person you quoted is completely, utterly, and undeniably correct.

The person I quoted would of been right if he was talking about Halo 2.

COD is quite a heavy contender you should know.

It went up against THREE call of duty titles.

I alone easily know many people who didn't completely switch over to COD over those years because Halo 3 always had something that kept us coming back for more.

People I know now have easily dumped Reach without a second thought.

COD: 4 was huge. Still considered the best of the MW series by many kids anyways.

Halo 3 still had competition but I like to believe that it was its complicated simplicity that drew players back. When you have multiple titles that use similar gimmicks to keep attention (Challenges, LoadOuts, Unlockables), often players will want that newest iteration.

Think of how Gears, Halo, and Grand Theft Auto fared. Each had distinctive, linear gaming styles and yet their followers were huge in numbers. Call of Duty has numbers but they dwindle as soon as the next title is released.

Humf...lets see. The game was made in 2010 now it's 212 and still has on weekends around 100,000 or so people playing. Yeah this game is not long lasting at all. BTW forge is WAY better than Halo 3's.

Considering H3 pulled 100k players on week nights, Reach barely getting 100k on week ends is sad.

Well if you guys don't like Reach, then go populate Halo 3. Didn't know that. Didn't have a 360 then.

Agreed. All the changes are good and add variety. Do we really want another Halo 3? Just running around with one gun and no armor abilities? It's good that 343 wants to try something new. Do we really want the same thing for three more games?

Not really considering it's also contending with CoD:MW3, Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, and Black Ops.

Many online multiplayer titles really established themselves during Halo 3's time. Battlefield wasn't seen as that exciting of a game, but with the improvements made to Bad Company 1 and 2, when Battlefield 3 came out it was a widely anticipated game. Similar can be said for Call of Duty. CoD4 was the first good CoD game and then WaW blew horribly. Modern Warfare 2 established it as a good franchise and Halo 3 lost its throne from there.

Having a "lunge" attached to a ridiculously overpowered melee is a big problem. Bloom's randomness is always fun. Nades that sometimes blow up instantly and others take a full 5 secs. I could go on....

The nades blow up instantly if you shoot them or if another explosion goes off near it. It's actually a very reliable system. Yes the melee lunge is ridiculous. Go into a custom with a guest controller and inch closer to them after every melee so you can see just how ridiculous the lunge is. Literally half a sword lunge.
