Just had a Ken moment:

Tagging
Right now when you go to search for a group, you see this page. What if there was a subcategory called "Search by style or genre" so people could narrow down on groups that suit their interest?

Tags would be typed out by the group's administrators to communicate to others what kind of group it is. For instance, a group dedicated to general discussion could have the tag "general discussion", and groups with that tag would pop up. Or maybe a group centered around Halo ODST could have that as its tag, allowing people to see all the relevant groups and join the one they feel best. Some groups might even have multiple tags, i.e. Forum Tryhards is both a Halo and general discussion group. You'd only be able to have 5 tags.

Suggested Tags that would pop up:
>Halo
>Custom Content and File Sharing
>Clans
>General Discussion
>Controversial Discussion
>Underground (no rules)
>Other Games
>Movies, Music, and other Entertainment
>Fanclub
>Help and Support
>Bungie.net
>Other

But this raises one major concern--with all these groups showing up, how will people know which one to join? That's where a rating system comes in

Ratings
Fact is, some groups out there just have better atmospheres than others. Rather than try and join each one to find out for ourselves, there could be an automated system that helped us decide (at least when searching by tags). The system could assign a rating based on user activity relative to creation date (groups that are still active over long periods of time will have higher ratings). It could also take into account how many people leave the group per month (it could be assumed that they didn't like the group).

For now, those are the only two algorithms I could think of. We obviously don't want member count to play a role in this because people would boost with alt accounts. And we don't want it to be based on the collective trust rating of members ITG because then people will treat mythic members like messiahs who come to resurrect poorly-rated groups (I see some of you mythics smiling right now). And lastly, we don't want the ratings to be controlled manually by users because then they'd boost, as people will inevitably do.

While the rating idea is a bit sketchy, I think tags would be very helpful for finding a private group to join. I'm not sure if this was brought up and shot down but I'm still curious either way.

So long as tags are assigned by the moderation team for that group I'd be fine with it. I also like your idea of a rating system, though I imagine that if your group is open there could be trolls that easily join and leave the group rapidly to give it a bad rating.

Do you mean like manually assigned, or pre-canned tags? I can see how people can abuse the latter by purposely tagging the group with the wrong tag, but I doubt that'd be a big enough issue for it to be a moderated system.

And we don't want people typing out tags for obvious reasons :P

I dunno. Say I have a Magic the Gathering group on Bungie.net, and I want people to find it if they search "Magic" in the group searchbar. I'm pretty sure that Bungie isn't going to include a "Magic the Gathering" tag by default right?

Which is why the abillity to type in your own tags would be useful. If the user isn't satisfied with the group he can still always leave, and when not abused, it gives the user a good idea of what may occur inside of the group.

I'd just be afraid of people posting inappropriate tags, like the fiasco before the Reach files were censored. It would defeat the purpose of the system.

While I do see the legitimacy in typing the tags, I think they serve more as to organize the groups out there rather than to specifically hone them down. I think that'd be more left to the other search fields.

For example, to get to your "Magic the Gathering" group, I would search by the "other video games" tag. This would then show groups for other video games in alphabetical order. From there I can search by your group's name, or by your username, or just scroll down till I found it.

Which is entirely why the tags would be assigned by the adminstrator of the group and not normal members. If I choose to tag my group with "Butt", "Boobies", and "69 All Day", well, that's just a way of giving you an idea of the sort of stuff that goes on in my group. It might be a good thing, or I might be shooting myself in the foot, which encourages me to be somewhat mature about choosing my tags.

Perhaps there could be "Suggested Tags" for simple organizing purposes, but I feel that typed tags wouldn't be abused.

Oh! Of course the administrators would definitely be the only ones who could assign the tags. We wouldn't want normal members of the group or people not in the group tagging it.

I must not have made that clear in the OP. Thanks for bringing it up.

>Underground (no rules)
Was expecting "underground" to be for certain hipster groups, haha. Also an "exclusive" tag could be useful for groups that require certain... requirements. That said, I'm not sure if groups should be limited to a pre-set list of tags. It would be good if they could assign their own as there is no way a premade list could cover all group-focuses.

Perhaps a limit to tag numbers could be useful. It would be easy to abuse tags, with irrelevant ones too, if there was no limit. Though the tags like those you have listed could be a "useful" tags idea to be shown when choosing them.

Overall, a good idea as it's tough to find a group with the current system.

Yea I think 3-5 would be a good range to cap it at. A group could be:

"General Discussion, Underground, Halo Reach"

Searching any of those 3 would bring up the group at some point, but searching all 3 would yield more refined results.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I like the idea of group tags, but I'm not sure about a rating system that tries to account for anything other than just activity. Anything more than that can be influenced by many variables, so it becomes less helpful.

Known by some, but not by all.
Soffish: Do not eat!

We would also get tags like:

Corrupt

Ses pool

Bk's

Lame

Hopefully not, but someone would do it.
