considering that the covenant are using forerunner technology, it is entirely possible to theorise that the forerunners colonised the covenant. unfortunately, the covenant species, more prominantly, the brutes and elites started fighting among themselves. hence, the forerunners created the flood to destroy the entire covenant. much like how God used a flood to destroy Man after they became too wicked. The Ark was used to preserve the different species of covenant and forerunners hu would eventually become modern-day humans. Unfortunately, the flood grew out of control after the formation of the gravemind and started attacking the forerunners. left without any alternatives, they activated the rings, called halos, to prevent the flood from spreading. and to destroy themselves and others to starve the flood. they were successful and the forerunners were destroyed, and the respective species were released from the ark to reproduce on seperate planets, the humans being given earth as they were direct descendants of the forerunners.

when the elites and prophets found forerunner technology, they reforged the covenant to worship the forerunners and accompany them on "The Great Journey" unaware that it was actually their own destruction.

i also believe that the haloes, when activated, revert time to the last activation.
all the while retaining the forerunner technology. i'm assuming that the earth was a desolate planet where the ark is housed, and is therefore devoid of forerunner technology. whereas the prophet homeworld(s), is probably the forerunners' homeworld as well, and there is probably an artifact there, similar to the one found at cote d' azur which tells of "the great journey". although there is not much proof of this, i juz seriously doubt that the forerunners onli left military equipment to the prophets. also, if an artifact like this truly is in the possession of the prophets, it beign a star map, would give coordinates to the homworlds of the other covenant races. when it led the covenant 2 reach, it was probably to retrieve that piece of artifact for another star map. to lead them to the rings or earth, for that matter....

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” – Psalms 46:1-3

but y would the forerunners run a genetic experiment for no reason? i'm just trying to determine the flood's initial purpose.

That's what I was thinking. It's fun to sift for clues in the games' dialogue. I remember that Gravemind/King Flood/Venus Fly Juggernaut said "I am a monument to all your sins," which supports the Forunners genetic experiment theory. And because it said it directly to the Chief and Cortana, Gravemind may have addressed them as Forunners, or at least their desendants.

i mean they are pretty lethal. although my theory is relli just a lot of collective -blam!-, i seriously doubt the forerunners would create such a horrible mutation for a civic purpose. i mean, u dun relli expect to see a flood form behind the cash register at wal-mart, do ya? and besides, their probably called combat forms for a reason.

Facts are the enemy of tru7h....

ummmm... The forerunner didn't create the Flood.... they found them. At least, to the best of my knowledge that's what happened.

So they don't really have a purpose they just are.

Evil Angels
CHROMEHOUNDS
1/6/2010- A day that will live on in infamy.

The Man in Black fled across the desert, the Gunslinger followed.

I read a thoery a while back,(credit who orginally said it)and it basiclly said that there was a forerunner who was bassily evil and wanted immortality,so he made a creature that would help him.He got his wish but he became the GraveMind. When the other forrunners actuvated the rings,GM saw everything he ever loved be destroyed. And ultimately his punishment, was immortality itself. But GM had seen MC and the Arbiter and is/was trying to get them to use the rings again.

Once again, that was a theory, and not by me,I just put it in my own words.

but wheer did they come from? if that's the case, they must have a homeworld. and besides, they must still have a purpose.

they came from the planet that instalation 04 (first halo) was orbiting with(threshold) and also the flood do have a purpose and keep the enemy from activating any halo or the arc thats why they take over bodys

Do humans have a purpose?? do the Elites have a purpose?....No, the just are.

It has been speculated that the flood were found in a gas giant, much like threshold... although i don't actually think there's any evidence for this.

but if they can be found on threshold, then u might as well say dey can be found on the planet which all the other 6 halos orbit. so now there's 7 flood infected planets! woohoo!!! combat forms for the win! and if dere are whole planets with flood on them, then the forerunners can just destroy those planets and they need not build rings which kill everything else!

Facts are the enemy of tru7h....

That's true they could have been found on any planet. But the problem is that they're not an advanced race, like humans or Elites, that you can just exterminate by destroying a planet. The exist in various different forms... from spores to Graveminds. The forerunner helped them spread. Left alone on their own planet who knows what the flood would have become. But the forerunner took them off their planet either by accident or for experimentation. Now they've spread through out the galaxy. It wouldn't matter if you destroyed 1 planet or 1000. They are too spread out for an effective strike. So the only option is to ensure they don't spread to other galaxies. And the only way to do that, at least in the forerunner minds, was to starve them to death.

A bit of that is speculation but it should be logical.

forerunners:GR8!!!! IT'S ONLI ONE PLANET!!!! let's build 7 extra large rings which can kill all life in the universe for the fun of it! after all, we have the power to burn this planet straight to hell... but knowing that they are a threat to all life, we'll kill all life instead! so that they can live freely and not be threats to anything!!!
