Rice is cool when you are hungry for 2,000 of something.

He's that plant from Little Shop of Horrors. Rick Moranis RL'd it all the way to one of the Halo's.

Gravemind isn't mentioned in the book. To be quite honest no one really knows what he/it is. He refers to himself as a "monument to our sins" which could be to say that he is a highly developed flood form that has been around for a while, but I don't know if there is an official explanation of what he is.

A flood form made up of the bodies of the floods enemies and fallen combat forms. It is the flood in the cutscene after the "Quarantine Zone" level.

i think rpepper is right about the grave mind but if he was part of the flood why would he want the key to turn and kill them all?

Well it seems as if Gravemind has been around a loooong time, possibly through multiple activations of the Halos. He might just be so sick of watching societies destroy themselves that he wants to die as well.

It's a "flood intelligence", try an imagine starship troopers if you will- and the brain bugs. . but he's a extremely old and wise and doesnt eat brains.

You must be one of those players that don't watch cutscenes.

the halos would kill gravemind if they were activated. the only flood forms that survive the halos are infection forms, so gravemind couldnt have been around before they went off last time.

Firstly, you can see from halo 1 that the ring doesnt kill the flood. Instead, it kills all compatable life forms, stopping the flood from increasing its path of destruction to a greater level. That said, it is a puzzler as to why gravemind would want to stop the flood. A few of my more solid theories (and by solid i mean 'kinda... almost... sort of') are that either gravemind is not a flood form (no plants have been converted by the flood on the halo rings, why would gravemind be?) or gravemind hates his existance as a flood, being far too intelligent to spend time living what is ultimately a pointless existance, or that gravemind is a strange kind of good guy, and was being a hero, merging the arbiter with the knowledge of the humans to stop the key from turning.

~edit~ actually, now trhat i think about it, gravemind was stopping the key from turning, wasn't he? That throws the hero idea out. The idea put in my head thwe first time i saw gravemind was that he's the leader, or the brain of the flood. He's put a plan together to stop the flood being beaten, and that was part of it.

That's not a very good argument. I'm from europe, and I understand every last word on that game. And if you truly can't, why do't you just go into player settings and turn on subtitles? actually now that i think about it, what is this thread even doing in the Halo 3 forum? This should be in the Halo 2 campaign forum.

I didn't say combat, i said compatable, but sentient was the word i was looking for. It may or may not kill the larger forms of the flood, no one can say for sure, but the infection forms must survive based on the fact that they survived one halo detonation already. Unless, gravemind may somehow create flood, which speads from him. I guess we have to wait till halo 3 is released until this mystery is solved...

Since combat forms are just really infection forms with a stolen body, i doubt halo would destroy them. If anything, it might vaporize the combat form body but leave the infection form.

The Halo's have only activated once before, Peniment Tanget said "this installation has a succesful utilation record of 2.8 trillion simulated (yes, that's right, the Forerunners weren't about to commit mass suicide before making absoluty sure that this was going to work) and one actual, it is ready to fire on demand. And when one Halo fires then the others fire, 343 says: 'technically this installiotion only has a blast radius of twentyfive thousand lightyears but when the other installations follow suit this galaxy will be quite devoit of life.'
