I just find it hard to believe how the Covenant managed to obliterate Earth's defenses in their condition. Take in the following accounts:

2 of the 3 prophets are gone
The Flood have taken High Charity, the Covenant capital
The councilors are dead
Tartarus, chieftain of the Brutes, is dead
The Covenant is in a state of total civil war
Regret's fleet was too small to cause any MAJOR damage, could it?

Ideas, anyone?

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

That against 300 MAC Guns, and however many ships they have in orbit.

Cool, my own little box!

Well if you've read the books (specifically the fall of reach) they can take over planets quite easily, I mean, they couldve glassed (term for burning with plasma) Earth from the beginning, but they didnt instead they landed on Earth looking for something. Also (this is sort of a question) the Covenant's communication to High Charity is slow because they are so far apart, right? So they probably didnt know about the civil war in high charity and were still fighting on Earth.

Yeah, that's correct. You killed Regret I believe, and one of the other ones was eaten by the Flood on the level High Charity.

I think it's highly possible Earth is almost in complete devastation. We saw New Mombasa, and since then the Chief and has left, along with Sgt. Johnson and Keye's daughter. Since they've been on Delta Halo and elsewhere, think about all the other places the Covenant have landed on by now. Considering the Civil War, by the time Earth is taken over the Covenant could not even know of the war yet, let alone the deaths of 2 of the Prophets. I'm sure the information could be sent to the ships, but in the midst of a war its hard for that sort of information to get around completely. I think it makes a good premise for Halo 3, in fact. Covenant take over Earth. MC comes back and the Covenant are fighting eachother. No better time to strike, eh?

here are 3 theories of how they took over earth with books and the h2 game to explain.
1.in the book first strike cortana says the covenant slip space technology could easliy go past the mac guns without having to deal with them then shoot them from behind. there techonolgy can go to a spot within a diameter of an atom. Moreover, she says they have not figured how to do that but hey maybe they figured how to fully utilize there slip space drives.
2. the second is during a slip space battle in first strike cortana said the covenant can shoot there weapons while in slip space. so when regrets fleet ceme they saw all the mac guns and sent a transmission showing the main fleet to tell where all the mac guns are. then when the main fleet came they charged the weapons up while in slip space and fired immeditaley when they were in front of the mac guns.
3. last is that fleet was really huge and they sent tonnes of carries to each of the guns while they were out of firing range from the mac guns. and the carries blew up all the guns with bombs. cause cortana said it was the largest covenant fleet anyone has ever seen in the delta halo level.

im just saying because i dont know if you know or not but the reason they didnt glass it is because they want to complete the Great Journey and to do this they need to get to the ark which is on earth

just helping

Well, we don't know if the Ark is on Earth, but its likely. Infact, maybe that artifcat is just a map to the Ark. Just trying to open up possibilities.

But yeah, the Covenant could've glassed Earth. The point is, whatever is buried under the ground, the Covenant want. It doesn't matter how they conquered Earth in the end....they did. Bungie will give you their own explanation in Halo 3 :P

You forget that Truth is onboard a Forerunner ship. My guess is after Truth's ship jumps out system that the rest of the Covenant loyalist forces follow their leader to Earth. More ships probably jumped to Earth after Regret arrived.

theres more than 3 prophets most likely, the covenent are way bigger than you think, regret was calling for back up in halo 2, theres probaly 50 or so covenant ships in the trailer and who said they weren't covenant separtist controlled ships. the banshees didnt attack MC, and they were being pioleted by elites who at the end of halo 2 were on johntsons side

We do, this just isn't funny.

The armada was already at Earth before all that happened in Halo 2

They lead under 20 ships to Earth. Lord Hood states that the fleet that glassed Reach was 50 times the size of the one at Earth. The fleet that attacked Reach was composed of 314 vessels of all classes.

Yeah there was a small Covenant fleet at Earth in the begining of Halo 2 I think we all know that.

That fleet was only 18 ships if I remember correctly. The question is how did 18 ships get past 300 orbital MAC cannons and destroy Earth's defenses.

they didn't destroy earths defenses the fleet of 18 ships manage to take out a few of the mac guns protecting the area. the mac guns can only be fired in front and not behind so when the covenant managed to get under the mac guns the guns were rendered useless so the UNSC had to use their own spacecraft to counter the covenant ships. + the covenant technology is 10x more advance in their eyes our technology is ANCIENT. i read this from sumwhere i guess

Once Regret was on earth he made the jump to delta halo now why the hell did he jump to delta halo can sum1 please remind me? anyways once he left i guess the covenant sent most of their troops to conquer earth.

How did the Covenant manage to conquer Earth?

They didn't. Covenant ships have the ability to jump with enough precision to end up within atmosphere of a Planet. Obviously that would expose them to Earth forces, but they aren't looking to destroy humanity -- they just want the artifact.

Dur :P
