They probably took over Earth quite easily. In the books, it's outlined that human ships need to outnumber Covenant ships on an almost 3 to 1 ratio to come close to having a chance- the main problem is that the Covenant ships are just so superior, the humans have to team up and pretty much focus on taking out one at a time- plus, there are many covenant cruiser types that humans haven't even seen, and therefore have no idea how to combat. Also, the Covenant are good at slipping in past outer defenses, and more than likely sent landing parties to Earth (this is how they conquered Reach as well) to take out the MAC guns from the ground and take them offline.

In Halo 3 Earth is overrun by Covenant. I know the fleet of 18 ships got under the MAC guns, Im not blind. The question that is being asked is how did Earth fall. Did more reinforcements jump in system to help Regret? Or was it Truth and his Forerunner ship that took out the MAC guns? I think it was Truth.

I just find it hard to believe how the Covenant managed to obliterate Earth's defenses in their condition. Take in the following accounts:

2 of the 3 prophets are gone
The Flood have taken High Charity, the Covenant capital
The councilors are dead
Tartarus, chieftain of the Brutes, is dead
The Covenant is in a state of total civil war
Regret's fleet was too small to cause any MAJOR damage, could it?

Ideas, anyone?
No, we just suck that bad....

Anyone who has read the books would know this. Because of their incredibly superior Slipspace drives they can travel at the speed of light through Slipspace and control it so that they go short distances. So the covenant Slpispace jump their carriers past a planets defences, drop the troops on the planet and then they take over and shut down the fusion reactors that power the Orbital MAC guns. Therefore allowing there cruisers and capital ships to simply blast their way to the planets surface.

dude dun be dumb how can a freaking old artifact forerunner ship take out the freaking 300mac guns ur just insane. Truth made the jump because the eartifact on earth was already found he wouldn't risk making the jump to earth wif the forerunner ship because the ship is too important as the ship appeared out of slipspace Lord hoods mac guns tried to take it out but as you can tell the station was already busted up real bad and there were plasma explosions all over space. Do you actually think that once regret jumped out of earth that all the covenant forces went with him..Of cuz not they came and dug up the artifact and while they were doing it took out MOST of earths defences . earth hasn't lost all its defences yet numbnuts...

and if you mean truth jumped into earths defences with his fleet you are so wrong, in the cutscene it shows only TRUTHS SHIP and that was the old forerunner ship appearing outta slipspace. And besides the fighting was already all over the place when they arrivied so i have to say is this .

SUMMARY:

Mercy came to earth purely as a recon mission after locating the location of the ARC he fled as his identity was to important he had to come to earth as he was a prophet and he must locate the location dun tell me you send a grunt to earth to find out the location of the arc. anyways after he left the covenant sent a excavation team to earth to dig out the artifact while doing so they took out MOST of earths defences when the artifact was dug out Truth left for earth wif the Forerunner Ship (Which had to play a important role) to earth to the arc. so earths defences are hanging on a thread but well our defences are most likely screwed anyways ...

They don't use gunpowder, they use gas-operated weapons.

Oh and two questions:
1) Was that fleet at High Charity Regret's fleet?
2) Did that fleet go to Earth?
