What....

  • 05.28.2012 3:33 PM PDT

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

1, I'm not even joking.

Reach is just a convoluted attempt to rehash previous moments that made the other Halo games amazing but falls on its face every time. Nightfall is a complete joke compared to The Truth and Reconciliation, the fact that that mission can be done SLASO in less than 5 minutes just shows that something's wrong - that's 1/10th of the campaign and what can be laughably called "the story".

Which brings me to my next point - the plot. There wasn't one, not until New Alexandria at least, the rest was just moving from farmland to some small bases to fight Covenant just because they were there. Then when we finally did get a 'plot', it was so contrived and horribly done it just came off as Bungie further trying to inject the 'nostalgia factor' into the minds of the players by shoehorning in Captain Keyes, Halsey and Cortana.

This brings me to my next point - the characters. There weren't any. The only one who was even remotely interesting was Kat, Jorge had potential but he was just a copypasta of Kurt from Ghosts of Onyx and he died like half way into the game. Everyone else was bland, sterile and one-dimensional. I never felt anything for Noble Team, there was no history explored. Bungie said that they wanted to deliver a "human story" (Marcus Lehto's EXACT words) with this game... SO WHY DID YOU MAKE THE PROTAGONISTS SPARTANS? They're about the most inhuman humans in the series, an extremely prevalent theme throughout the novels is that Spartans are seen as 'freaks' by most of ONI and the ODSTs, you cannot tell a "human story" with these kinds of characters.

Did Bungie not pay any attention to what they did best in ODST? Their narrative method in that game was flawless, absolutely masterful in the way they drew direct inspiration from classical literature like Dante's Divine Comedy and film noir movies. The characterisation was told through the music and the atmosphere for the Rookie, we heard what he felt which allowed the player to project themselves into him by drawing on our emotions as we played through the game. The rest was done well with the squad banter, cheesy as -blam!- at times but still there and it showed a lot about the characters we were dealing with. Seeing things from THEIR perspective for half the game was a major way of developing them each and ultimately made me care about them.

So why didn't they do this in Reach? Why weren't Six and Kat friends? They were both from S-III Beta Company, why wasn't there any meaningful interaction between these two characters who would have grown up together? How about a scene where Kat is torn between going to save Six or Carter and throughout the game we see flashbacks to both her time on Onyx with Six and her time in Noble Team with Carter. This kind of thing would show a great deal of character development, as well as getting the player emotionally involved and wondering what happens next.

I could go on here, but from the reasons above this game was nothing more than a conglomeration of missed opportunities because the writers were either too lazy or too stupid to make a meaningful story with detailed characters in order to tell this "human story".

umm...9. I would have added more vehicle levels. I give Bungie a 10 on how well the sabers maneuver.

Honestly? 5.

Had some memorable moments for me but if only Bungie had stuck with the same lines as the book.

Halo Reach 2/3rds of the way mythic conqueror (6/9)

I was playing it to complete mythic difficulty and it was very enjoyable a solid 8 with its flaws

5. Not very impressed. I enjoyed Halo 3's the most. I remember the hype while first starting the game and then the enjoyment of going back through looking for easter eggs, and then the challenge of beating the campaign on legendary.

After each mission of constantly dying, but getting a bit closer each time, and when the mission was done I was rather excited.

With Reach I had none of those good times. After each mission I just felt like "meh, what's next?" The easter eggs were also pretty dull. I felt no satisfaction after beating a mission on legendary at all. Halo Reach was about my least favorite besides ODST. I only play today to pass time.

7.79 Sniper
5.34 Needle Rifle

I'd say 3 or 4. Its just not interesting enough to warrant replaying it.

It probably had some of the best easter eggs in all of the Halo games, but everything else was just horrible.

The characters, the missions, the overall lacking feel of the invasion and devastation.

The only redeeming qualities were Jorge and his "gentle giant" aura about him, and his death which although cliche felt really good. Only emotional part of the game.

And the ending, even though we saw it coming from the first cinematic, with Noble 6's death. Everything else was beyond sub-par.

I'd be generous to give it a 5. Probably a 3-4 would be adequate.

It was a bit cliche, but that might not be the worst thing.

The character development was lacking and the story was not as good as the potential it had. For a FPS I would rate it a 9 for the campaign, but for a Halo game I give it a 4.

I loved it, unfortunately I don't buy games for the campaign I buy them for multiplayer so it is a 1 overall :(

  • 05.29.2012 2:14 AM PDT

Two makes there more than speakers.

It was a Campaign? It seemed more like a constant chain of to-do activities that had no progression at all.

  • 05.29.2012 2:36 AM PDT

idk i liked it alot great end of halo for bungie i give it a 7

  • 05.29.2012 2:46 AM PDT

Here are the reasons i gave it a 2:
-Very rushed campaign
-Bad storyline (cliche, etc) (also there were many better stories relating to reach that would have made a better game)
-Stupid friendly marine AI
-EXTREMELY STUPID Noble team AI!
-Very linear
-Jun and Kat betray you
-Jun gives away your position on the only stealth mission
-Cheap development (Long night of solace was copied directly from the games demo level, except for the space part of the mission and after that (that is why you can't skip the cutscenes)).

THere are probably more but i can't think of them right now.

The only part worth playing over and over would be Long Night of Solace's space part.
Who doesn't love Starfox? Haha...

That was fun. But for the first area most of the time was spent waiting for the Covenant to show up. At least in Starfox you have enemies to kill. Most of the enemies in Long Night of Solace's space part. Were only in groups of 5. You really had hardly anything to kill.

Topic: 1/10.

1.

Terrible story.
No character development
Multiple canon breaks.
Boring enemies. (Stupid AI)
Environments were boring.
Cliche.
Weapon Sandbox.
Anti-climax drama
Absolutely terrible voice acting.
Terrible introduction to Covenant.

Need I go on?

EDIT: OH! And the constant desire for activating switches. All. Campaign. Long. Seriously. 90% of the missions end with a switch, or have something to do with activating one.

No but on topic, I didnt really like it. You couldnt go anywhere, you couldnt do anything. Campaign is supposed to be an experience, you're supposed to explore, not just take your set path all the time. Reach's honestly felt like everything I did was completely forced upon me, even where i walked.

I have to say I prefered Halo 2 to them all. There was so much you could do, so much to see. They wanted you to explore around the map and see what you could see.

Hence Rex, Scarab Gun, Soccerball, Hidden ODSTs.

Reach didnt do that. Reachs plot and characters were very cliche as well, and to tell the truth the story could have been told a lot better.

Basically how I feel. I would have gone further. But its 2am.

ODST was a great game, it had great character development and it was engaging. Even though Bungie pushed out ODST within a year, it had far more content in terms of story than Reach. And considering Reach already has a pre-existing awesome storyline, they did a piss poor job.

ODST looked like a Reach Beta, but it seems like Reach was an ODST beta.
