Infection in Halo 3 isn't zombie killing; it's ethnic cleansing. Have you ever noticed that these "zombies" are just black Spartans?
Eight.
Reach was a thoroughly enjoyable, down-to-earth science-fiction military shooter. Unfortunately, it also being a Halo game was its downfall: Halo has always been a little more fantastical.
Master Chief is a one-man-army turned spearhead of an entire species' desperate last ditch effort to drive a stake into the heart of a religiously zealous, genocidal empire who hops from ancient space installation to ancient space installation avoiding the ever-present, never-ceasing desire of an extra-galactic parasite to assimilate all life in the known universe at the same time.
ODST is a film noir-style thriller, a detective mystery that features a squad of battle-hardened marines who go through hell together on a daily basis as its cast. The very nature of their occupation creates a unique bond which elevates them beyond simple soldiers to something more: friends. They crack jokes and make playful jabs at each other even as a near-endless horde of enemy combatants advances on their position.
Reach, on the other hand, is a story about ordinary soldiers (who just happen to wear advanced armoured powersuits) doing what is expected of ordinary soldiers. They fought the enemy, pushed them back, lost good people in the process. They neither engage in the fantastical heroics of the Master Chief and Cortana nor do they have the same relationship with one another as the ODSTs - in that regard they're a little boring, but that was what Bungie seemed to be aiming for.
I enjoy Reach for what it is, but I still prefer the other Halo games more.
