Subject: First Impressions

In everyday situations, it is always a good thing to have a good impression, wether it be a job interview, or meeting someone for the first time.

While being on Bungie.net, with every one behind a computer screen or something along those lines, do first impression matter on how you reply to a user or how serious you can take them?

By first impressions, I mean seeing the way the user responds to a post or argument or anything that is.

Also, do you have lasting impressions or impressions on users at all, good or bad.

Please no mentioning of user's account

OP, I really am not sure what you mean by "first" impressions in this way. We have impressions on one another every day. Maybe you mean impressions in general?

I do admit to have certain feelings about certain posters. I remember a lot about a lot of people.

I think he means that vibe you get when you see certain threads. Like what type of person the OP might be creating a thread...????

Okay, I'll bite. I got no clue.

In a way, first impressions too. Like when you see a post by a certain user for the first time.

General impressions as well.

I can't really do "first" impressions here because it takes a few posts to get to know someone new and most new accounts now-a-days are just second-accounters.

But, once again, I can attest to having certain feelings and ideas towards certain people on Bnet. :)

DeeJ's first impression of me was me threatning to coat him in peanut butter and roll him in M&M's after kidnapping him from work. Ahh, good times.

Yeah I'd agree that first impressions aren't really that important.

Fun fact: I used to think Hyle was a poser. Now we're friends (Hyle if you're reading this I wish you were dead by the way) because I got to know him.

What matters most is repeated interaction I think, rather than first shots.

Pretty much this. Unless my first impression of a user is extremely terrible, which rarely happens. I always like to give people 2 or 3 chances before I decide what type of person they are.

Astute commentary.
When you're on these forums you'll notice a lot of users popping up and posting all around the place. You'll get a more accurate representation of who they are from that rather than by looking at one post.

First impressions shouldn't be undervalued, even on the internet.

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

First impressions are hard to forget, in life, love, and bnet - I know you all order things like that too - and even harder to correct.

The important thing to remember is that "digital courage" is based around the idea that you have a computer and x-amount of miles of internets between you and the person(s) you are talking to... some people take advantage of that fact... others continue on being themselves.

First impressions on this site don't really happen for me, just because I don't think i really remember names of users.

I wouldn't exactly attest to "first" impressions because, as others have said, I think it takes a few posts from a user to get a good impression about his or her mindset and opinions. I still think first impressions are lasting, but I like to see several posts from a user before I form a concrete opinion about him or her.

Most of the people on The Comunity are really nice, but joke around when they can. The Flood are just a bunch of people, I wouldn't really respect them.

Community are people. check
Flood are people. check

Community members are respected.
Flood members are not.

Based on what you have written, there is something wrong with your logic. I agree that the majority of the flood are trolls and/or immature (which is how I interpreted your statement), but I think you communicated your thoughts poorly.

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

I like to post. My post enters the brains of many. I doubt they leave impressions though.

First impressions make a difference, whether it be online or in real life; although, I think first impressions span a much larger amount of time on Bungie.net.
