What exactly is a dedicated server? I understand that you have to buy/rent one, but what exactly are they? I mean it doesn't make since to pay for a server.
An idea that I came up with just now is that they might be servers with better internet connections. Is that in some way true?

A dedicated server is just a server that will keep running, even with your pc off. A regular server closes down once you close out of halo pc. A dedicated server is great because it offers everyone the chance to play while you're gone, and it doesn't waste power because you can have your computer off (If I'm wrong, correct me).

well if you yourself have a good connection, you don't have to rent one.

Servers most likely use T1 connections, which is very fast. It costs a lot to rent a server, I think Iggwilv said he pays $36 a month. If you have dsl, it costs about $20 a month, depending on the service (I have AT&T SBC). For $17 more a month, I think it would be worth it.

Yes, a dedicated server is one that runs on a machine(server) that is "dedicated" to hosting a Halo game. You can run one from your house if you have the following items:

A server(computer) - not the one your playing on either. Put as much processor(minimum 1Ghz) and memory(minimum 512MB) in a machine as possible, the more the merrier. You don't need a good video card because you not going to be "playing"(meaning sitting in front of) on the server.

A lot of upload speed - Use the following chart to determine how many players the server can host without lagging to bad:

Modem - Ha! Don't even try it.
DSL - 128kbs upload speed 2-4 players
Cable lowend - 356kbs upload 4-8 players
Cable highend - 768 kbs upload 6-10 players
T1 or better - 1.5Mbs and above upload 10 - 16 players

Highend cable runs $50 - 80/month, and a T1 runs $80 - $100 or more so....

Renting a server for $36/month is a much better proposition

So is my modem lying when it says it gives me 54 Mbps? Because we pay $90/a month...

Sorry if I sound stupid but I am totally new to PC games. So are you guys saying you have to rent a server just to play Halo? Why would I need to rent a server? Will I not be able to find a game like I do on XBL? Just curious and sorry but I honestly know none of this.

Thanks.

No, renting a server is just for dedicated servers. You can play halo on your good ol computer. You can also host from your computer, as well as have a dedicated server. Halo is not incorporated into xbox live, but you have all the same gametypes and vehicles from the original xbox version, plus a few new levels and weapons. If you don't want to have a dedicated server, you don't need to rent a server, you can just install it and play.

No it's not lying. Your getting 54Mbs from your wireless network card to your wireless router. Your wireless router is then connected to your DSL or cable modem thru ethernet most likely and that is 100Mbs. The problem is your DSL/cable modem connects to the Internet somewhere between 128 -768kbs and that is where bottleneck is, you can only go as fast as your slowest connection.
