Subject: I'm a bit disappointed that destiny is an MMO

I really like this company and the feel of their games. I just don't have nearly the time commitment to play an MMO especially as I am going to college next year, so the game will be launching when I am at school. Video games will certaintly not be my priority at that point anyway, and especially not an MMO. If it were an FPS or other genre I would reconsider, but the odds are very low of me buying this game.

I just wanted to say that since 343 is taking over the old Halo games, I might not ever seriously play another Bungie title. :(

Anyway, I wish you all the best of times in what is sure to be decades of a great company doing bigger and bigger things. Thank you guys for the awesome last decade or so, and wish you the best of luck!

It is a "Sci-Fantasy" shooter with MMO elements. In all honesty, I think you should wait until we see some actual details on gameplay before making a decision.

really?

Well that is some better news then. If any such details come along in that pipe it would be great.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

When did Bungie themselves say what game Destiny is?

They never announced a game called "Destony."

lol.

Maybe they did and the reporter made a typo!

It could be about a french supersoldier from the town of stony. Working in the sci-fi elements would be tougher in that case..

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

You'll have plenty of time, trust me. I doubt Bungie is making a World of Warcraft clone, knowing them they could revolutionize what we gamers think what MMO really means.

Dude, it is a typo, you don't need to continue a joke that long on 1 word.

OT: no one knows what Destiny is other than a game.

Guys there is a difference between an MMORPG and a MMO. MMO just means its a massive multiplayer online game. It could be a sci-fi shooter that supports a large number of players on each server. Also, remember this is going to be an Xbox title (not on pc). So I doubt it will resemble other popular MMOs (WoW, Guild Wars, SWTOR, etc).

What's wrong with you people? We should place our trust in bungie to make a good game just as they trust us to buy their product.

It is such a shame that the term MMO has come to a point in the industry where it actually turns people off to trying a game out. MMO certainly doesn't have to mean large time investments, or additional fees, or anything of the like. In fact, I really think the name needs to be altered. Most games fit the bill of being an "MMO" in the sense that they are time investments and have varieties of DLC's and such.

MMO needs to be redefined. It is a massive multiplayer online game not for those above reasons as seemingly perceived by everyone, but because such titles offer persistent world's that exist even when you're not online and tend to have interaction with a larger amount of individuals than we're used to. That, at least to me, sounds far more exciting and were it not for the stigma of additional fees/time sink, I think more people would be interested. (Though I must profess, I fail to see why time investment is a negative. I understand people have things to do and don't want to always want to waste away the day in a game's investment system, but length is a good thing IMO. As long as the game is fun, I dont think people should worry so much about how much or little time they can devote to a title).

Having no knowledge of what exactly Destiny is, I think it is too early to assume anything. But, knowing Bungie, it'll be a really interesting and awesome title and really push the industry as they seem to do with every title. Knowing that several employees have expressed a desire for a persistent world, I think we'll be in for a treat and not a disappointment.

It's kinda early to be assuming isn't it? Since we don't know for sure as to what destiny is, I'm not going to speculate anything.

MMO has a bad rep for people with little time to devote because they are used to hearing about "grinding" to stay current with the gear. I think MMO definitely needs to be redefined like revan said. I love the ability to interact with a massive community of like-minded gamers who enjoy doing just that (redundant maybe). I hope Bungie succeeds with this new endeavor and that Activision gives them enough breadth to do so in their own style.

For Carnage Apply Within

They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools! — they have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace

Very true. Grinding to get gear, even though that is essentially any game, is annoying. The in-game rewards systems need work. I would love to envision an FPS MMO that contains hub cities to explore with options to jump into matchmaking games (with the normal 10-20 min games) alongside co-op functions/campaign story/etc. with a solid emphasis on clans.

The clan system should return to gaming and the proper tools should be given to players to recruit effectively alongside building strong, interconnected communities. I imagine a title releasing with strong social networking ideas (ie: in-game calanders/ranks/news/notifications/clan rewards) that drive behavior toward working together. I think, for competitive recruitment, a matchmaking playlist would exist with specators who then can invite members to their group afterward. I honestly imagine the group structure of BNet in-game with enhancements.

But who knows. The idea of a persistent world, especially with an FPS, intrigues me. Hell, when I think of potential customization options I get excited too. The current idea of having to upgrade to the best armor, potentially sacrificing both individuality and customization, offends me. I hope games drive toward a system of allowing stats/names adhere to previously owned items and that use generates better stats/customization options.

Though, I'm going a bit off-topic I suppose. I simply am very excited and eagerly anticipating news on this title. The idea is simply incredibly interesting and crafting a new universe in general is awesome.

Hey forum.

I'm sorry if this came off as assuming what the game will be and won't be. That wasn't really what I wanted to say. I have just heard alot of speculating recently I guess.

Red Dead Redemption has MMO elements.

So does section 8.

MMO just means a massive amount of players online.
