MMO has a bad rep for people with little time to devote because they are used to hearing about "grinding" to stay current with the gear. I think MMO definitely needs to be redefined like revan said. I love the ability to interact with a massive community of like-minded gamers who enjoy doing just that (redundant maybe). I hope Bungie succeeds with this new endeavor and that Activision gives them enough breadth to do so in their own style.

It is such a shame that the term MMO has come to a point in the industry where it actually turns people off to trying a game out. MMO certainly doesn't have to mean large time investments, or additional fees, or anything of the like. In fact, I really think the name needs to be altered. Most games fit the bill of being an "MMO" in the sense that they are time investments and have varieties of DLC's and such.
MMO needs to be redefined. It is a massive multiplayer online game not for those above reasons as seemingly perceived by everyone, but because such titles offer persistent world's that exist even when you're not online and tend to have interaction with a larger amount of individuals than we're used to. That, at least to me, sounds far more exciting and were it not for the stigma of additional fees/time sink, I think more people would be interested. (Though I must profess, I fail to see why time investment is a negative. I understand people have things to do and don't want to always want to waste away the day in a game's investment system, but length is a good thing IMO. As long as the game is fun, I dont think people should worry so much about how much or little time they can devote to a title).
Having no knowledge of what exactly Destiny is, I think it is too early to assume anything. But, knowing Bungie, it'll be a really interesting and awesome title and really push the industry as they seem to do with every title. Knowing that several employees have expressed a desire for a persistent world, I think we'll be in for a treat and not a disappointment.
