I'm hearing about how the MP demo only had a shield meter, and health was irrelevant. Once your shields drop, you are dead.

Now, I hope this only applies because it is a demo. Because first of all, not only does it make no sense, but secondly, the shields, couple with the health system, was what made the gameplay just that much more interesting in the first game.

i think it was just like that for the demo, maybe because they havent finished the new hud yet so the health part wasnt on it

I haven't seen the demo myself (56k sucks), but I think that somebody said that you only get one bar of health or something, so one shot will kill you when you're shields are down. I don't think that it's really a good idea, cos it somewhat lowers the importance of head-shots, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

They didn't have it because 1: The HUD wasn't finished or 2: They didn't have to put it in. When the demo player got hit by Max (max is the elite), the shields, went down, as normal. I didn't see no health. Maybe it's there, just in a different form.

somebody said (dont remember if its a bungie person or not) that their is only one bar of health so that the game is more realistic. makes sense to me. :)

Supposedly, during one of the MP demonstrations, Frankie said that they got rid of the health altogether, and all that will be around is the shield meter.

The loss of any kind of indication for health would make it even less realistic. Shields do not equal health. The SPARTAN-II armor is capable of taking a few hits even without the functioning of MJOLNIR tech.

does this mean there will only be shields in campaign, or is that just for multiplayer

  • 05.15.2004 11:44 PM PDT

That's exactly right Megalith. The Spartans originally didn't even have the recharging shields (they stole it from the Covenant, who in turn had supposedly stolen it from the forerunner), and the MJOLNIR armour is supposed to protect the wearer from ballistic and plasma damage, so taking out the health meter is ridiculous.

If they get rid of it, I'll murder them... The health metre is definitely needed for the game, it hjas proven itself time and time again to be invaluable.

If this is ture, it is probably the worst thing to change in Halo 2. There was a whole different element of strategy involved in halo due to the fact that you had a recharging shiled and a non rechargable health. I mean the health really wasn't that much in Halo 1 and given that one shot kills doesn't even make sense as per the realism of the Halo story its just dumb. I know well still have shileds that regen, but the lack of health will really detract. Makes me very sad to see a change in Halo 2 that I really don't like. Everything else looks so great.

Maybe they're working on something really cool, to surprise us all. I'd prefere it to be:

Shields
-when shields go down the suit takes damage
-when suit gets damaged enough, health goes down (suit status doesn't need to be zero)

I don't think it will make it easier, it would be cool. You could have an unrepairable suit, but with "repairable" health, and the more damaged your suit is, the quicker your health depletes when shields are down.
What do you think? I'm sure Bungie will do the right thing (which, just so you know, is what I just said, ;-p )

god knows i've gotten through many a bind with just one little red bar of health to hold me up. but would i want to play the whole game like that? hell no! frankly, i like the mix of short term shield management strategy with longer term health management strategy.

i'm hoping the lack of health at e3 was just to make the demo move faster.

if the whole campaign is balanced for no health combat, i predict much lameness.

Does his shields ever go to nill in the new demo? i don't think it ever does. Maybe bungie beleive that two bars take up too much of the HUD so when the sheilds are all gone it switches to the health bar until the shields re-charge again, possibly.

Didnt the guy who went to fanfest say that their is no health bar, and also in the gamespy multiplayer review that drop a hint about a new health/shield system.

Personally i trust bungie, if they've got rid of health bars and left us with a shield only i trust them to make it work and so should you. Think about it if there is no health, then obviously there going to make the shield a bit stronger and regenerate faster.

i dunno if this could be the health bar but i remember seeing like a little blue circlenext to the shield bar, maybe as the more damage you take the color changes. but zam has a good point also.

You have an excellent point, Haloruler33! That was for multiplayer. In MP, you can lower the health, but still have shields. That wasn't campaign. So, we may have 25% health at the lowest in multiplayer. We will have normal health in Campaign, just different in multiplayer.

damn...why aren't they just keeping the health system the same? Now people will just try to hide the whole game so their shields can recharge...they better make that work real good, or i'm definately putting on 400% health for every multiplayer game.

I don't think we all have to worry. I believe the health meter is still very much there, but instead is displayed in a far different way. I think the color idea to the right of the meter that someone else pointed out, is the most likely result that many ppl probably didn't notice because they were too busy checking everything else out.

If you didn't notice in the trailer, almost everything in the game was displayed by icons instead of actually having words appear on the screen...thus less clutter on your HUD.(Thank god for us who pick-up alot of items in a row)

Bungie thinks these things through...you don't need to worry.
