Subject: Is Halo Reach's multiplayer competitive or casual?

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

I know that certain playlists can be described as either competetive or casual, but what is your opinion on Halo Reach's multiplayer overall? Is it competetive or casual? Maybe a mixture of both?

Reach was a game made for more casual play right from the start.

lol, like I didn't know about MLG.

Just look how much they had to change to make it even remotely "competitive".

There are playlist for competitive players and their are playlist for casual players. I'd say a mixture.

Pretty much this. Armor abilities and 100% bloom add a bit of randomness which is more for the play for the fun of just chaos and so that appeals to the casual aspect and a lot of lists include this.

The no-bloom, no AAs, faster movement gameplay is really well built for competitive play, however.

I would easily say the game can appeal to both.

The 343 forums suck. They're full of retarded kids and mods who got butthurt in the B.net forums for being told that they're bad.

There are two playlists for competitive players and like 40 for casual players. "The mixture" is barely relevant.

The competitive community is very small, that's why. The most populated lists are Grifball, Team Slayer (full bloom) and Infection.

MLG and Arena have less than 2,000 combined, generally. Why make more lists to divide a dwindling population?

I like competitive lists myself, but there's no point in making any lists based around that if nobody plays them.

Reaches multiplayer sucks, so did the campaign, i played it for a while( my rank is Mythic). i left reach and possibly halo because 1 bungie left and 2 i dont trust 343 at all and 3 halo 4 is gonna suck balls

Most of the competitive crowd was driven off right from launch and never came back. Hence the small populations of MLG and Arena. Not to mention MLG is so alien in comparison of vanilla or TU Reach.

Yes.

I don't understand why a competitive community, especially seeing how awesome Reach was at the last MLG tournament, wouldn't come back to it though. It played well, was fun to watch, and was really competitive.

It may be different from the standard gameplay style, but Hell, all the game really needs is toggleable bloom and it would be nothing that's all that different from what one can build.

Reach was made for casuals. H3 was a mix. Competitive players had ranked, casuals had social.

Arena does need more lists, but the way Bungie had it originally only lended itself to slayer and 343 just never added to it once it was changed, unfortunately.

Arena will never be truly competitive because it lacks competitive gametypes. Even at high level it's still just good players abusing the -blam!- out of the gimmicks.

MLG in Reach has good gametypes, but it lacks a ranking system which is desperately needed.

So the two "competitive" lists in Reach are hardly even competitive. Add that with horrendously designed default settings and you have a game with no competitive merit.

and the mlg playlist has no ranked system like Halo 3's. It's very casual in Reach.

Some playlists are more casual than others. Sometimes it can be pretty competitive. I'd say 50/50. Just my opinion though.

H3 still had AR starts in its ranked titles... And equipment, for that matter.

I think it's split between casual and competitive play. Now by the playlist, by the players. There are a lot of compettitive people that play buy there are also those who are casual and just play for fun. I don't see a problem with this.

Yes, having a field of green light that you could whip out of your pocket that just instantly regenerated shield had no problems whatsoever. Indestructible bubbles were cool too. Not to mention these things respawned damned quick.

There's a reason MLG didn't use them. They were as gimmicky as the AAs.

By definition the multiplayer is competitive as players are competing to outdo each other.

However there are so many added factors which detract from the basics of Halo or instances of randomness that the value of the default game as a good competitive Halo title is low. Yes, there is still a skill gap but it's a lot smaller than it could be which is what alienates a lot of competitive players.

EDIT: Incidentally this does make me wonder how any player who willingly plays a PvP mode frequently can't refer to themselves as competitive. Subconsciously the vast majority of people are playing such modes because they want to somehow measure themselves against others.
That said there's no reason said players can't also play casually; I don't see why it's not possible to be casually competitive.

Likewise I don't full understand why the term "competitive" is frequently used to simply label a good player. Even a "hardcore-competitive" player could be pretty bad at the game but fill that niche so long as they have a good understanding of the game's mechanics and how they interact with each other and play to win.

So essentially the way I see it is that the overwhelming majority of players are "competitive", many of those players also play "casually", some have a "hardcore" understanding of the game, and all of them have players which fall under their labels who are simply good and bad at the game. However the definitions of good and bad within each sub-category may differ slightly, but typically there will be players who are universally recognisable as both good and bad in any of those categories.

But you didn't spawn with equipment. You had to go get them on the map and possibly fight for them. And a regen was fairly easy to counter.
