Probably already said but maybe the sword and shield Cortana talks about are the Halos.
The Flood survived on it after the activation and aren't there supposed to be little dinosaur things as well?
It may be possible that as well as being a weapon the Halos could also shield against itself.
Sound plausible?

Its Bungie, anything is possible in the plot...... think a certain character that starts with an "A". No, its not Avery Johnson.

Here's some additional thoughts. If the Halos wiped out all life in the universe why are humans and Covenant still here?
Maybe the Covenants Forerunner ship had some kind of built in shield, and the structure from the trailer was the shield activating.
Wow, this could open up whole new ideas!

If you mean the Arbiter, well yeah, who would have expected an Elite as a playable main character.

The Forerunners activated the Halo's THEN eons later the Human race and the different species of the Covenant evolved, and probably 'other' species that we haven't seen yet (or are just too far away slash can't be bothered to get involved) Pay attention :-) Tally ho!

You people are looking way to deep into that phase.

Sword = Plasma Sword

Shield = Jackel Shield

Hence you will be able to weild the shield and the sword at the same time.

Halo :The Flood
"Then, even as his target vanished from sight, and zamamee railed at his subordinates, a couple of grenades tumbled down from above, rattled around the floor, and exploded.
The force of the blast lifted the Elite up and out of his seat, gave him one last look at his opponent, and let him fall. He hit with a thud, felt something snap, and wated for his first glimpse of paradise"
proof that zamamee is dead

Halo only destroys sentient life in [i]that[i] galaxy that they're in. Not the universe. The humans/covenant existance isn't exactly answered yet, that's what people are hoping to find out in Halo 3. As for the Arbiter, I don't think we know his real name yet.
