Sometimes I'll be reading a persons post and I'll click their tag only to find they have just created their account within a day or two and have no gamertag linked. I know that the creation of multiple accounts for the sake of spamming/trolling is a problem, but a few of us have wondered why you folks don't make linking to a gamertag mandatory? In terms of the anonymity of us as posters, there is no way I can learn your true identity from your gamertag, and if you truly wanted to create multiple identities to be a nuisance on these forums you'd have to outright pay for an additional entity. I dunno. Just wondering if this has ever been on the table for discussion and if it was and then dismissed what was the line of thinking.

I offer that I have this one account which I've used for a year and a half, and it's always been linked to show my admittedly lame stats.

Because not everybody has Xbox Live (like myself). Bungie.net isn't only for people that play Halo 2 on Live; it is also for Halo: Combat Evolved, the Myth series, the Marathon series and the other oldschool Bungie games. You don't need a gamertag to talk about those.

I see the logic, just that in the year and a half I've come here regularly, I've virtually never seen a thread about Myth or Marathon. Probably not looking in the right place. Just a thought - we get applicatons to our group and it's unnerving to see someone with what looks like a relatively familiar name except the account was created 10 minutes ago with no gamertag linked. Also it's always fun to see someone bashing another person based on their stats when they have no stats linked.

Did you ever visit The Underground? That's were you would see Myth and Marathon topics, although they still get moved off of the first page by people posting in the incorrect forum.

Hey Im not bashing either of those titles I just never saw them in Zanzibar (needless to say). Dmbfan have you ever had xbl or just in a lapse?

Edit: It may be worthy to note that asking mapquest for directions from Septagon to the Underground brings up Topeka Kansas. Currently though the Underground looks to be pocked with strays oohing about the new playlists.

look nine, the main point is that this isn't a community for xbl gamers only. And until xbl is available to everyone for free, it won't be. That's just the way it works.

As for linking gamertags, some people have multiple gamertags. What should we do about them?

How about those people who have multiple accounts on bnet?

In truth, it really makes no difference whether they have linked gamertags. Why does it matter? Next someone will be asking to make the gamertags and account names be exactly the same. Why don't we just make out license plates out phone numbers?

It has to stop somewhere...at the point where there's no need for change.

Thank you for your answer although dmbfan did it without the hoity toity attitude.

I've never had XBL because I've never had high-speed internet. I figure once I purchase a 360 I'll decide to spend the money on high-speed.

Well, the mass hysteria awaits you. I haven't got the 360 yet (or the upgraded live service) but I expect to keep my xbl account hot until I have no choice but to buy the 360. Although (off topic) I have a sneaky suspicion that thought eh 360 will continue to do well, in the next year or two you'll see original xboxes becoming more and more expensive and collectible and ultimately billed as the Xbox Original or something.

I think you're wrong there Nine, Xbox's will only get cheaper as retailers will try to open up space for the 360 by getting rid of the Xbox.

I'm telling ya. I have friends whove sold their 360's and then had to go buy a brand new Xbox to play some of the older games which didn't carry over. Personally I still cherish my xbox because it weights as much as a vcr from 1982, it's black and will never overheat. Maybe it will be like the PS1 where it gets revamped and sold smaller. I dunno - just a feeling I guess but I happen to love my xbox more now that it's 1st gen.

Phrog pilots, reckless and free. We would strap into our birds, set the engines on fire, and leave these earthly bonds with a chorus of WHOP WHOP WHOP. Akin to beating your chest and howling in defiance at the rest of the world.

I did the same thing and it makes the 360 experience so much more worthwhile.

Don't forget Proteon that some people don't really want the world to know their gamertag. Much like superheroes they probably like a little privacy and mystery. Many of the Bungie crew don't have their gamertags linked. More than likely for some privacy and to avoid all of the random people sending friend requests. The RedvsBlue guys hate random friend requests so much that they've added store items saying:
"No random friend requests".

I'm like you though, I don't care if people see how much I suck. I play the game for fun.

Well, there's a weird line between protective anonymity and the destructive power of being anonymous. Personally the only reason I've never bothered to set up a second profile (well not the only reason - I really have no reason to) is the Passport thing; getting a MS passport has become not only nearly impossible (theres a teeny tiny link at the bottom of setting up a hotmail whereyou can "no thanks give me my hotmail free" - anyway the passport feature is there to keep people from posting in a truly anonymous way methinks, and personally I kind of resent it (this account was created linekd to a hotmail account I haven't bothered with in over a year) - but it makes sense. I kinda thought the gamertag thing was along the same lines. Let me put it this way: after a year plus of being here at b.net, I don't feel a strong case for "protecting the poster's anonymity". On the contrary - I think a little accountability might overall weed out a certain kind of behavior where someone logs out and quickly creates a new account just to be an a-hole.

The OP has a point in that anything which can increase the "value" of an account should be considered. If people are restricted in the number of accounts they can make, the chances of them behaving are greatly improved.

Oh and Dmbfan, you should definitely get on Live.

That's why. Zanzibar was a mess of Halo 2 threads.

Also, for people who have multiple gamertags(like myself), you can link one to a passport and the other to another passport.

According to one of the ninjas(I think Shishka), it is ok to have multiple account for that as long as you don't use the account for something naughty like circumventing a ban.

I think circumventing a ban is a less frequent offense than playing permanant devils advocate.
