Subject: Did Jay W. let a little uncertainty slip in the H3 Documentary?

It's fun when we win and funny when we lose: Le Mediocrity
OR
Come take your verbal beating like a man in THE CAVE

I know that the trailer is running on the engine, and the engine looks pretty smooth. I also know that it was said a couple times in the documentary that "..this is what halo 3 will look like...".

However, at one point, Jay W. says the following about the trailer: "What we're building here is our bar, what we're going to shoot for in real game play."

To me, that indicates a bit of uncertainty regarding their ability to maintain the same high standard when it comes down to the "real" game. There's a difference between saying "This is it" and "This is what we're shooting for". To run all effects, lighting, texture, etc during a staged trailer is one thing, but to do it in the heat of a 8 vs. 8 BTB will be another entirely.

Thoughts anyone?

Damn you Wil, I've said this before only to get shot by the zomg fanboys.

The cutscenes may (and probably will) look like the trailer.

The actual gameplay graphics will most likely look significantly worse. Am I saying it'll look like crap? No, but it sure as hell won't look as nice as that trailer.

I noticed that too, which to anwer your question, did build up some uncertainty. However, there are like 20 giant ships on the screen. so i think bungie can work it out.

Action - Reaction, Cause and Effect.

its the real gamegraphics, said tens of times both by the bungieteam and Peter Moore MS chief, Do NOT forget that Bungie has always used their Ingameengine to create their trailers, cutscenes etc...

at the end, even if the game was H:CE graphics i would pay 100$ just to finish the awsome fight!

Go Bungie!

Well Koin, now it's you, me, and Bungie's own Jay W. spreading the good word.

I said in the original post that I know the engine is running the trailer. That doesn't mean they can do the same thing under the stress of the in-game action, network code, and stress of AI logrithms.

yes, the engine handles one guy walking. It has some nice dust. It can do long raw distances and it can do some ships.

What happens when you add AI and guys shooting and grenades?

Backwash anyone?

  • 06.08.2006 7:47 AM PDT

meh........

Well first off. Single player and multiplayer have totally different graphics. Multiplayer is always dumbed down in every game. This saves bandwith and makes faster loading times. If we are to see this level of detail, it will be in single player. Not to say that multi won't be sweet though. But I agree. To be able to run shading, lighting, movement, ect, ect; that is a pretty high bar to set. We will just have to wait and see.

I do have to say, i was watching the Halo 2 announcement trailer. and the graphics were very slightly downgraded as far as gameplay was concerned. Yet, i have that trailer in HD and i dont play halo 2 on an HDtv

Since when has a Halo game used anything except the in game engine to do its cut scenes.

Down, down to hell and say that I sent you there...

I came into the world with my legs forward and a woman cried "he was born with teeth!"

"I had no father I am like my father...I had no brother I am like my brother...And this word, "love" which old farts call divine be resident in men like you -blam!-. But not in me, I am my mother-blam!- self, alone."

You Are an Idiot

I'm not a fanboy but since when did Halo or Halo 2 gameplay look worse than their cutscenes? If anything, the cutscenes looked worse than the gameplay because of all the popups. And Frankie said the popups were already gone. If Bungie says this is what the game will look like -in-game, I believe them. And they have said many times this is what the game will look like if not better. Check out the Announcement FAQ and you will see for yourself.

I beg to differ fox, many games have slightly improved cut-scene graphics even when using the game engine to power them. I think H2 is among these. Texture pop-in notwithstanding, I think there was, in fact, a few extra effects and/or increased detail thrown on during the cut scenes.

Cutscenes/movies are always programed in High defination to make it look awesome. Gameplay is always programed in low defination.

Take just about any game on the market (including the Halo series) and compare how the cutscenes look to the gameplay footage.

cutscenes/moves will always look better then actual gameplay.

I'm not denying the cutscenes will look as great as the trailer. I'm just saying everyone is assuming the gameplay will look as good and when it doesn't they're all gonnea come back here bltching and moaning about how bungie lied to them about how good the game will look.

Ah yes! The inevitable "BUNGIE IS TEH SUXORZ CUZ THE TRAILER WAS THE SHIZZLE ADN THE DUST DUZNT LOOKHALF AS GOOD ON THE DETROIT MAP" crowd will be in full effect soon after release.

I may be doing this community a service by lowering expectations ... if only slightly.

You're doing Xenus work Wiltron.

As Calvin once said "I find it easier if you keep everyones expectations low"...or something like that. The point is I'm expecting Halo 3 to be a side scroller Contra type game.

Don't follow in my footsteps; I walk into walls
my 360s blog

Using Gears of War as an example what we see in the trailer is well within the realms of reality for in-game

HOLD MY DRINK.

I dont know why theres all the doubt. Bungie has been working and building the game for the 360 immediatly after halo 2. So that would mean that Bungie has been programming in some sort of 360 environment for 2 years(if the game comes out in November). So saying that, dont you think that the people that could better exploit the power of the 360 would be an in house company to the maker of the 360? If you own a 360 and a good HDTV set and saw the magic that GRAW pulled off, I could agree that halo 3 could in fact look that good.

People havent even started to use a percentage of the raw processing power of the 360 and I probably would assume that Bungie/Microsoft would have the best tools and resources at their disposal to make Halo3 destroy all the competition including the BS3.

I'm a huge GOW fan ... but that doesn't mean anything in this case. Different games, different engines, different company. Add to it the fact that their trailers contained action similar to that found in the game and it's really not a valid comparison. The GOW trailers had gunfire, multiple enemies, explosions, etc... The H3 trailer on the other hand ...

Edit: An additional note on "who can better harness the power?" You may want to take a look at THIS (I've seen the majority of the shots running in video as well). I luvs me sum Halo. I'm just saying Bungie doesn't have the market cornered.

You guys really care about the graphics that much? Bungie better not let all these graphics get to their head. Look at halo 1, the graphics were mediocre at that time, yet it was one of the most famous games ever. Why? The gameplay, that's what matters. If halo 3 had years-old graphics, but halo1 type single player and halo2 online-ness, then would be happy.

I, on the other hand, would be seriously disappointed. Why on earth would I want a new game with mediocre visuals that slapped together the gameplay of two old-ass games that I already own?
