This:

-options #1, 3, 5. Covie vs. UNSC is a classic. Halo games can work without Chief and Halo rings but they have to be immersive and connect to the trilogy. Noble Six is not fun to play as, Reach setting/locations are dull, and Reach canon had to be clarified outside the Xbox 360 instead of being clarified in-game. I did not feel immersed in Reach.

-AI centered campaign. I will always hold the opinion that Reach failed hard in this category: l337 hax enemies, repetitive combat, lack of enemy distinction, uncreative sandbox, arcade shooter, Reach firefight, extremely bad allies

-encourages and supports creativity and exploration (in campaign obviously). Countdowns are abomination

-decent sandbox. I hated using Reach weapons

-gold Zealots. The one thing that H4 may fail to do

I fail to see why you have to bash Reach to explain what is Halo.

Reach is the perfect example. The countless AI fails I see on YT are proof enough. The countless scripting fails (i.e. required Falcon hijacked, blown up) are enough to keep me stimulated. And of course, my tragic experiences with Reach will make me target it forever.

Of course, this does not excuse ODST, H3, even H2, and CE itself, but I'd rather not go into that right now. Reach is my prime target.

Funny, I recall more AI fails in Halo 3, like, y'know, a Marine killing me 5 times in a row, or a pair of Brutes driving off of the edge of the map in The Storm. There's also the incredibly retarded Elites that would rather punch a Hunter than actually using their weapons.

All games have their fails and Reach wasn't really the worst at that.

H3 had a longer time for those fails to become noticeable. Reach fails have been around since launch.

Regarding the marine, how so?

Regarding the AI driving, which vehicle?

I am not blind to their reckless charging (even with a fuel rod gun) and team betrayals with grenade sticks. Nonetheless, the H3 Elites get kills better than Noble Team even though they do not have invincibility. Furthermore, the grenade stick betrayals have been around since H2. The only reason Elites aren't sticking each other in Reach is because they throw them faster instead of doing a ridiculously long animation. Reach Brutes on the other hand are a liability.

"Where ere thou hast been, here or in yon world manifest? Canst thou tell what is, or what was, or what is to come? No thing shall last. Yet there are some things that will never change. History is written in blood, yet are battles really lost on the battlefield? Canst thou tell me where thou comest, and where thou goest, and what is, or what was, or what will be? For everything remains, AS IT NEVER WAS."

That makes you obsessed. Dude, get over it.

ON TOPIC: I chose "Other," because I find the option of the aesthetics (audio and visual) to be missing from your poll. This, I believe, is what makes Halo "Halo." I'll cover my opinions on the options, though.

The CE theme song - While definitely important to the Halo Trilogy (Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3,) this is not something that is featured in all Halo games. Halo Wars had it's own unique music, as did Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach and as Halo 4 will have. Yet all are undeniably "Halo" games. To further this, music is not a factor at all in extended merchandise that is clearly also "Halo," such as the books, comics and action figures. For this, they rely on the visual (both plainly visual and described visual) aspects of the Halo Aesthetic.

Master Chief - Definitely a major character in the Halo Universe. However Halo Wars, Halo Reach, and Halo 3: ODST (et al) all remained "Halo" without the presence of the Master Chief. For his character, however, he relies on the aesthetics of the MJOLNIR armor and the audio/visual elements that make his character's personality. That's what differentiates him from other Spartans as well as just another "space hero."

Covenant VS the UNSC - Important for the Covenant-Human War, but not something that's encountered in the Forerunner Trilogy and probably not something that'll be important in the Reclaimer Trilogy.

Duh...the Halos! - Important, yet only something encountered in a few Halo games and a few of the books/comics.

The narrator for the medals - Not important to what makes Halo "Halo" very much.

You can see your feet! - Not important at all. You can also see your feet in Mirror's Edge, Dead Island, and other FPS games.

Have you ever seen "I Love the Halo World"? It's pretty much all of that -blam!- that makes Halo what it is.

It's a bitter curse that I can't just abandon. Unless you have a suggestion on how I can empty my mind of all the things I've learned regarding Halo gameplay? I've been thinking of making a final video of all the things I love about Halo to ensure that but I fear it won't put my rage to rest. With H4's imminent arrival, I won't even have time to relax!

The Storm, one of the Missile Pod marines kept shooting at me, every time I tried to board the Scarab it would hit me with a missile.

The Storm, in the area with the AA-Wraiths, two Choppers just drove off of the edge for no apparent reason. Then there were this Elites in the Covenant that got killed because they all tried to go through a door way at the same time when a Brute with, well, a Brute Shot was standing behind said door.

It is all about outrunning, outgunning, and outsmarting your enemy that made Halos 1-3: ODST great games, even if CE was a bit drawn out.

Oh that. Yeah, those marines are quite annoying, especially because if you kill them all, they'll be replaced. They're also annoying if you get them off because they just stand in front of the missile pod, meaning you end up blowing yourself up. The only way to stop them from ruining things is to detach the turret or get them in the nearby hog which gets conveniently crushed.

Nonetheless, I never liked that Scarab battle. The crane method is not very reliable.

I must admit, that is pretty pathetic. I thought you meant the AI tried to drive away from you. That happens to me at Journey's End on The Covenant with the Ghosts and Choppers, impeding my AI collecting experience.

Right before the Hunter fight or after? If it's after, there's a way to control the Brute movement. If it's before, did you step through the door first? That triggers them to move forward. It is quite stupid how allies don't stay with you like they do in Truth and Reconciliation.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I think everything contributes to what makes Halo, Halo.

Master Chief is a big contribution, for sure.

The Joyeuse IP Formula

While all of that stuff is great and whatnot, what makes a game great is going to come down to its gameplay.

Halo, much like Marathon, was much more simple compared to other FPS games of its time.

Many FPS games gave you a whole -blam!- arsenal of weapons. You can have a rocket launcher, pistol, rifle, and sniper at your fingertips. But with Halo, you may only carry two weapons at a time. This forces the player to think scenarios though a bit more, and it changed the battlefield quite dramatically. Instead of two players going head-to-head in a match where they both have weapon sets that mirror each other, you actually run the risk of (basically) bringing a knife to a gun fight.

That's certainly not the only thing that makes Halo, Halo. But it's my two cents.
