Subject: Halo 4 Dissing

Many gave their lives so that we could live on. I intend to honor them by remembering them. Remember Cyborg. Remember John. Remember Noble.

I've been meaning to diss Halo 4 for a long time. And I have been dissing it so far, but this might interest you more than what I have been cooking up:

343 learned nothing from Bungie. To me it seems they think they know everything better. They made John speak a lot, they make him move a lot during cutscenes, they make him vulnerable and they oh god brought the BR back! YES!
To me it seems as if they are listening to Halo "fans" whining and they are making EVERYTHING better!
Now what if I told you, Bungie were never idiots. What they did was because they made choices! Ohh, what if they made John seldom speak because it was bad-ass and because it was YOU behind that helmet. Now it is some guy who talks too much.
It is Bungie's love and generosity that allows them to tolerate this. I cannot.

I have to admit, I have some doubts about H4. If the demo mission difficulty was Normal, then I dread what Legendary will be like. When you have things like teleporting and enemies that can knock out your shields with 1 hit after teleporting, oh boy.

Bungie would have learned that teleporting for enemies was horrible: Heretic boss, Regret. But 343 have yet to learn how op and annoying teleporting can be.

Nonetheless, as long as it's not like Reach, I will welcome it. Especially if it's used sparingly because spamming it is just going to be bs.

I can see where your concerns come from, the teleporting was horrible. But Bungie learned.
But 343 are new. They are indeed allowed to make mistakes, but one would hope they learned enough to avoid such stupidities. I mean Anniversary was nice. Why this?

They made John speak a lot

He's not spewing out monologues. He's simply saying a bit more "one-liners." Nothing more. That's a petty complaint. Not to mention he speaks when it's necessary. Not excessively.

they make him move a lot during cutscenes
lolwut? Again, what kind of complaint is this? People are supposed to move during cutscenes...

they make him vulnerable and they oh god brought the BR back! YES!
If this is sarcasm, then again, you're complaining why? The BR is a great weapon and the majority of the fanbase is excited for it's return.

The rest of your post is hard to even read and just a bunch of rubbish. If you're trying to troll, you fail badly. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

Through your analysis you managed to succesfully point your attention towards the uninteresting stuff in my post (that I didn't even bother to make powerful statements there) and completely missed my point.
Great job!

The Chief was never untouchable, new enemies mean he'll get caught by surprise a lot. The part about him speaking, from day 1 when the game was revealed 343 had constantly reinforced the fact that they were going to explore who the chief was....adding a few extra lines to his character is a good way to start....makes him more human.

343 learned nothing from Bungie.

They clearly have - they know how to make a competent story and interweave the extra media with the games. What exactly did Bungie teach? How can you say that 343i have learned nothing from Bungie when you've not specified what they were teaching in the first place?

They made John speak a lot, they make him move a lot during cutscenes, they make him vulnerable

LOLWUT? These have to be the most ridiculous complaints I've ever heard.

John has not become a speech-spewing orator, his dialogue is much more focused on the progression of the mission and is all entirely relevant to what's going on. This can ONLY be a good thing.

Make him move a lot in cutscenes? Are you for real? Of course he's going to be portrayed as vulnerable, the tagline for Halo 4 is that he's going up against AN ANCIENT ENEMY THAT THREATENS THE ENTIRE GALAXY. By portraying him as some godlike invincible warrior the tension and drama evaporates, by making him vulnerable the players become more emotionally involved.

Now what if I told you, Bungie were never idiots.

I'd laugh in your face about how ridiculous that claim is if you're serious about it.

What they did was because they made choices!

Er... have you NEVER watched a Bungie ViDoc? They contantly say "we listen to our community" and "our judgement is very much affected by the fans".

Ohh, what if they made John seldom speak because it was bad-ass and because it was YOU behind that helmet. Now it is some guy who talks too much.

Sigh... You know, the primary complaint about John in the original trilogy was that he's completely sterile as a character because of his lack of dialogue and emotion. John is an established character in the Halo universe, there are 3 novels that focus on his story - his past and present. 343i is interweaving established lore with the games meaning that John has stopped being this blank slate and is now someone for the player to relate to.

How can you complain about CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT? You honestly want him to be quiet because it makes him "more badass"? What are you, 12?

It is Bungie's love and generosity that allows them to tolerate this. I cannot.

Then I sincerely hope you don't buy this game, you're not worthy of the quality the story promises.

People with poor depth perception tend to go the extra mile.

Uniquely Hard Sniper Map

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed by the design of those Forerunner defense things. The environments look great, the overall story seems like it's going to be interesting, and even the idea of teleporting, hard to fight Forerunner things doesn't bother me, but the artistic design of those things...its head opens up and has a human skull in it? Really? I feel like when 343 designed those things they had in mind "what kind of enemy would look really scary" (which ironically, trying to make them scary is what made them unscary) instead of "what would a futuristic Forerunner enemy practically / functionally look like." Don't get me wrong, every once in a while Bungie had a poorly designed character, vehicle, etc, when they made Halo, so maybe 343 will consider a little redesign for Halo 5 to take those things from an obviously video game character-ish monster to a more practical and believable design.

You hit the nail on the head as to why I didn't like the visual look of the Knights, as I couldn't pinpoint it earlier. However, as enemies, they seem to be quite ferocious, and the Watchers seem to be formidable opponents as well (though it will yet to be seen if they'll be an annoyance like the Flood and the Drones).

Nooooooooo!

Btw, it looks like the teleporting is an armor ability with limited usage. The Sprint armor ability pick up shows up at 1:20 in this video.

You got stuck by FalconStickr

117 is a quiet man and you should know that. He dosnt need to speak his actions say everything. And I think the OP forgets that Halo 1,2&3 were made when the tech wasnt as good as it is now. Halo 4 just looks disappointing. 343 wont get my money

  • 06.04.2012 8:30 PM PDT

What a waste....

I like John speaking. The BR returning is fine. I always wanted MC to be more of a character.

(To discuss Halo 4.)

I am perfectly fine with teleporting.

Enough of this ridiculous amounts of health and our guns firing BB bullets used for difficulty increases.

I want smart enemies, I want enemies that are challenging.

Regret even on Legendary wasn't a pain, it was just the damn Honour Guards who spawned to Infinty. (no pun intended)

They basically reskinned human weapons and called them forerunner weapons, then added an effect where the enemies atomized upon death.

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

Just wanted to add my voice to the choir, saying that Halo 4 looked bland at best, great graphics, but still...

Halo has taken inspiration from various fictions in the past, but always managed to refine and make them its own. Whatever it was MS showed at E3 was not refined. It hurts me when I look at something that's supposed to be Halo, and all I see is Crysis (foremost 2) and some other sci-fi stereotypes.

And ontop of that we have the cinematography, script and direction, everything feels off. Are those aspects of the game that is in need of renewal? Are they really that stale and old?

Cortana screaming in the end for instance, who directed that mess? Poor Jen...

I know 343i has said that they're making Halo their own, in that case they should at least have the courtesy of calling it "343i's Halo 4", just like Peter Jackson did with King Kong.

Furthermore: as a friend pointed out, Chief Made a fantastic choice when directly rushing forth, just after having seen an elite being disintegrated within a second, by a single beam. Good move Chief, good move.

I thouhgt the same thing, and when he activate the "special vision" or whatever the name is, i feel the Metroid vibe... well i don't care about H4, they can do whatever they want with this thing.

  • 06.05.2012 1:41 AM PDT

Rakso.

I just don't like what they have done with the weapons, like the sniper rifle from halo 3 looked really nice and now they made it ugly in my opinion. Same with the battle riffle, the only weapon that looked better in the gameplay was the assault rifle, and to be fair i am barely going going to use that gun online or even in the campaign. I think if they change things it should be for the better and not to make things worse.

It wasn't a cut scene , john didn't choose to run ,the person with the controller did , they were giving us a taste of the game , not how to tactically play it.
