I'm placing you on the hitlist.

Yes Bungie developed the games but did they come up with the Halo idea or did Microsoft? I have a bit of a commitment towards Bungie having played their games going all the way back to Pathways into Darkness and Marathon when I was only 9 years old. So I am unsure if I'll be able to get into Halo 4 if it was actually Bungie's idea.
It would be like if some other gaming company other than Capcom came out with a Street Fighter for example, it just wouldn't be the same.

  • 06.05.2012 8:32 AM PDT

It was Bungie's idea, Microsoft didn't own Bungie when they first announced it in 1999.

  • 06.05.2012 8:33 AM PDT

Bungie came up with it. Microsoft swooped in and made it an exclusive and launch title for the Xbox. IIRC Bungie originally unveiled Halo at some Apple event.

Macworld '99 if I'm not mistaken.

Then in my eyes Halo Reach will forever be the last Halo game. I can not play Halo 4.

Bye.

The first official announcement of Halo was during Macworld"99. So it was in development before Microsoft acquired bungie :-).

There's a few documentaries that used to be on the media section of this site- which have, presumably, moved to the Bungie YouTube channel- detailing the conception of Halo. It was originally called "Covenant" which one of the developers noted sounded like an "80's glam band".

So to answer your question. It was Bungie's idea and Microsoft kept pushing for more games. When they split Microsoft kept the rights to Halo so 343i could develop future Halo games. :-)

You shouldn't write off the series just yet. It may not be Bungie at the helm anymore, but it looks like things are coming along nicely. You'll gain nothing from not giving the game a chance.

  • 06.05.2012 8:45 AM PDT

Bungie was originally working on halo for mac, so bungie came up with the idea.

Agreed. Get the game for the Campaign if not for the Multiplayer. The Campaign play-through they did yesterday at E3 completely blew me away.

Just because Bungie didn't make it doesn't mean it wont be good. I'm pretty sure they have old bungie Employees working on it (don't quote me on that). If Halo 4 is good you can still play it and when Bungie's new game comes out you can play that. There is no way I'll be waiting till fall of 2013 to play a new game.

It was bungie. Apple was behind the game when it was first announced, it was still an strategy game back then

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Bungie

But you can argue Halo was inspired by ring world and Marathon was also has elements very familiar to a later 80s Sci-Fi book series.

Same.

I'm counting ODST as the last Bungie-made halo since (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think Reach isn't considered canon.

Even though everyone here answered you question, there is a nice vid on the front page of Bungie's 20 years of game industry.

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

It was originally developed for the mac.

Alot of ex-Bungie employees work for 343, Frank O'Connor is franchise development director so its in fairly safe hands. Have you seen the E3 reveal? It looks pretty darn good to me.

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

The only thing that Microsoft really contributed to Halo was buying Bungie and make it be made for the XBOX and adding "Combat Evolved" to the title.

OP you shouldn't be afraid to check out Halo 4. It's true that Halo is something Bungie has created and I personally will not take the fiction seriously unless Bungie was involved; however, the multiplayer is definitely worth a look if your into that kind of stuff. Multiplayer experiences can be emulated from an original concept. Just look at Treyarch with Call of Duty.

Was it apple? I thought they did it at Mac world, or something like that.

Does anyone even read these?

After the contract didn't Microsoft lead it into a new direction? Like a first person instead of 3rd person? It looked very different when it was first announced. But maybe Microsoft played no part in that.

Reach is canon...

What would ever give you the idea that it wasn't, just because people didn't like it? Sure it had some discrepancies with the books, but then they went and changed all the books(which were better).

MS played no part. I was unable to find the video on youtube which explains Jason Jones decided on the perspective, but I have it on my computer and am now in the process of uploading it.

Edit: here you go; apparently it had something to do with narcotics
