We know the Covenant are back in Halo 4, Elites and all. But why are we, once again, enemies?

This article has details of the opening campaign mission in Halo 4 (no leaks, don't worry) and mentions how, upon facing the Covenant after thawing, Chief feels much the same way.

Cortana then states: "These Covenant aren't outfitted like standard military" and believes they could be part of a rogue ship. However, the duo then realise the Covenant force is rather substantial, and that Cortana's theory is unlikely.

So why are we fighting the Covenant again? Do we run into a Cruiser that became stranded in deep space? What are everyone else's thoughts?

They aren't the Covenant as far as I'm concerned. Just pirates.

Pretty impressive armarda for just pirates don't you think? And in the E3 Demo, doesn't Cortana refer to them as Covenant?

Yeah, but there is already a Covenant, the Covenant Loyalists. I think this is all just a familiarity thing.

They're like rejoined ex Covenant.

They are a sect that still believes somewhat in their religion, except it's shifted from the great journey back to "Forunners are gods and must be worshipped."

Basically, the Sangheili have shifted back to what they were before their entering into the Covenant.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

It's possible that these 'Covenant' have been stranded on Requiem for a while, since we know that most of the Jackals just completely abandoned the Covenant after Truth fell. Or perhaps the Servants of Abiding Truth manage to get themselves some ships at the end of The Thursday War and reform the Covenant because the barbaric and dishevelled appearance of the enemies in this game very much reflects the state of Sangheili society post-2552.

Well, I think it's just to add the bread to the butter, so to speak. They were too afraid to not include them. But in any way, talking about this "story" like i'm serious is hurting my stomach.

I didn't know that you had a direct insight into the development of the game!

But in any way, talking about this "story" like i'm serious is hurting my stomach.

... But it's not though, is it? You know it's entirely possible to answer someone's question without throwing in your lot about the game.

I don't have insight into the development of the game. You should know that.

How incredibly intelligent. Simply make put something someone else has said into negative form. You astound us with your insight.

Also, in the campaign footage, the Elite draws an energy sword. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but he doesn't appear to be of high enough rank to weild an energy sword (unless he is of regal lineage). Perhaps this is evidence to DeceptionCobra's pirate theory? A lawless pirate cares not for rules.

Still, they're equipped like Covenant, ranked like the Covenant, and they've got too large a force for mere pirates methinks.

Hmmm, what a conundrum.

I think they're stranded covenant loyalists too low on resources to care. In world War II, a group of Japanese soldiers held out on one of the islands, I forget which one, until 1947.

It would have made more sense if instead of Elites they would have put in Brutes. Then we could say they are struggling Covenant Loyalists.

Things change. Maybe there are more Energy Swords these days. Or maybe they are more desperate than they used to be.

Maybe they've been there since before the schism. We don't know all of the covenant's ops. They could have sent a team there, and for some reason been unable to pick them up.

Calling them Covenant is also deprecated, i guess.
