A little bit of sausage, a little bit of hot sauce, a whole lot of awesome. Have a question? Ask me!
Chapter

I don't think so. People do stupid things yeah, but the webteam already thought things like this through. Trust the order.

We miss you Logan.
Ask any question. I'll help with anything on site or off.

Not all alts are used for such reason. I have an alt, and I haven't used it for anything wrong. What if something happens to a users original acc?

If we make it more difficult to create an account here, we could drive away some trolls, but we could also drive away some (soon to be) contributing members of the community.

Name's John. I'm a 21-year-old firefighter/EMT from lolhio who doubles as a die-hard Halo fan. I've been enjoying the franchise since 2001. My favorite iteration of Halo would have to be Halo 2 simply because I never got to experience the joy of a full-on Halo: CE LAN.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, and boot Zome.

Don't worry about that, Carthurlane. Bungie.net has this neat IP bans where if someone creates an alt account to avoid ban or about to get banned, the system will find all other matching pairs of internet protocol address and ban the account and suspend their account until the ban expires.

They have already thought about that long before you made this post :)
Except that they don't use it.

Yes they do. I've had my alt banned because I tried to use it in lieu of my banned main twice. They do use it, and it works.

For Carnage Apply Within

They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools! — they have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace

Why? Bungie and Microsoft are not directly associated anymore.

Not that that matters. LIVE is still a necessity when playing multiplayer on Bungie's games, and the majority of members have LIVE, or at least an account. The problem lies with those who don't have LIVE or what have you, but still want to make an account.
Funny. I don't remember logging into live the last time I played Myth II.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I agree that the ability to make an alt so easily can result in some some issues here. I wish we could find some way to better regulate account creation, or at least limit it, but I don't know of any good way to do so at the moment. I don't think paid accounts are a good idea either, because while it adds inherent value to the accounts, it also comes with some notable cons. Such as discouraging new users, and adding that kind of value to accounts can and sometimes does result in more account stealing and ancillary phishing.

Instead, I'd rather we add intrinsic value to accounts, rather than financial value. The titles are a step in the right direction, but they're not getting the job done. We need to find some way to add more value to accounts without risking too much of the potential bad consequences that value entails. Certain perks for certain kinds of accounts. Like custom avatars, or a better method of self-moderating what you see as bad content. Perhaps a guaranteed spot on a future public BETA or something if your account meets certain criteria. Something like Achronos' Trust System, but one that better tabulates beneficial proclivities and doesn't encourage entitlement and noted separation among the community.

Something like the title and trust system staying in place, but with some alterations in order to make it a bit better at indicating trust. I don't know how to do that exactly...but then again I work in construction and not web design or UI. I'm sure if anyone can some up with something, its Bungie and their webteam. Though, that hinges on whether or not Bungie is at the moment interested in such a thing, which I'd guess they are not because they're so busy making a new game and website design. Perhaps we'll get something which works better in the next iteration. Maybe Bungie has already figured it all out and is just waiting to test/implement it. We'll see.

For right now though, we'll just have to keep on keepin' on. When people make alts to spam or troll or violate our rules/CoC/YoU we'll just have to report, and let the moderation handle it. The report button does not seem to be utilized as often as it once was. I know that's primarily because there's just generally a lot less traffic here at the moment, but if there's violations going on, its simply not being reported anymore.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

I would have thought that they are presently very interested in these changes - what better time to bring them in than with the new website?

In Soviet Russia you pilot many flying vehicles while Nikolai embarks on crazy journey of revenge filled with movie references....

And the unlinked accounts rose up in protest, attempting to overthrow the totalitarian Bungie regime before being launched into the sun...

It only takes a simple question to change everything.

If someone is willing to make multiple B.net accounts, what would keep them from making multiple XBL accounts?

Also, only allowing paid accounts limits the amount of users that can have legitimate discussion.

A7x FoREVer!

That just seems like a really stupid idea... Anytime someone mentions forum usage and paid subscription in the same sentence, it just drags me the wrong way.

If we did this then we are letting the small percentage of "harmful" alternative accounts ruin the Bungie.net experience for everyone else. Not to mention we'd lose a good chunk of existing members and prevent new ones from joining.

Let's face it... alternate accounts are primarily used as a means to post harmful content without the consequence of being completely cut off from this site. If we only allow e-mails that are connected to a subscription service (Live, PSN etc.) this will help in detering individuals from posting unwanted/harmful content.

Thoughts?

From what I have heard, they can't IP ban you but they just use your cookies in some way to recognize your computer.
