Well the Forerunners made the Halos as a fail-safe. They then found the flood and were unable to contain them, forcing them to use the Halos. Mendicant betrayed the Forerunners because he was corrupted by a Gravemind.
The Halos were made specifically to stop the Flood threat.
As for who pulled the Trigger, from the Halo 3 terminals we learn that Didact fires it from the Ark while Offensive battled Mendicant for time at the Maginot Line. I don't know if this will be retconned when the last of those damnable Forerunner books come out but I sincerely hope not.
Didn't Grey make a good theory that he fired it from 04 instead of the Ark?How would he survive that?
Because I do believe that Halos are safe from their own blast. Could be wrong, and admittedly it doesn't make a great deal of sense. I just wondered where Didact fired them from, because if it was the Ark then surely he would have been there in 2552 and had something to say? Unless he went on a Walk of Eternal Regret/Shame type thing...
Why wouldn't it make sense? The Halos are conservation worlds as they are weapons. It's where many life forms were stored.
And yeah, he fires the Rings then they went into exile, to parts unknown.
Still wondering how the Forerunner series "retconned" anything.
