Subject: How does the S7 Sub-Machine Gun Caseless round work, exactly?

I was just looking at my Halo 3 Concept artwork book (which is very cool, by the way); and, In the section marked 'I need a weapon' there is a portion that looks at the size and appearance of the ammunition in Halo 3.
I noticed that the S7's rounds were just small, metal, oblongs, much like chalk for a snooker cue. I was wondering how these work in an actual firearm, or if it was just a design choice? And, furthermore, how the magazines work: e.g How the caseless rounds are fed, are there any existing examples of this, etc...

[edit] Found the existing version, now just want to know how it would work in the Halo universe.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Haha, good thing you put up the edit. I was about to refer you to a marine corps article discussing caseless ammunition. I'd imagine it would work much the same in the Halo Universe as it does in real life.

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

And the magazines are probably similar to the ones on P90.
