I don't think that Cortana is sideing with the Gravemind when she says "Alright, shoot." I think she is being defiant like "bring it on" and when she says "I HAVE WON!" in the cortana letters she means she has won the fight against going rampant which she attempt to overcome in the books. What do you think?

Not at all, look:
Gravemind say:

"I ask you answer"(kind like that, i don't remenber) and cortana say, "allrigth, shoot", that means, allright ask!

The tone of voice she said it in and the look in her eyes (she looked like she was in a stareing contest) tell me she wasnt going to give in with out a fight.

She sounded curious to me. You act as though Cortana is a sentient being that the Gravemind can take over. She is an AI construct, not a person. Furthermore, even if he could take over here, there were many many many holopods she could choose to project herself from, and could easily run away from Gravemind.

Cortana is considered sentient. Refer to the Conversations From The Universe, where AI Cortana is speaking with AI Solips, Cortana says:

"I had a discussion with Dr. Catherine Halsey about the similarities between a Spartan and an AI. Her point was that we're both human-created tools, both sentient and both play a leading role in the protection and safety of the populace. But her analogy troubled me and I told her so."

She may be sentient, but you forgot the Life part. An Ai is not alive, that's why they are called Artificial Intelligences. I know she is extremely advanced and smart, but is still not classified as alive.

Yes, I agree with you. However, we are not entirely sure on what specifications the Flood needs to take over a being. It is very possibly, since Cortana can communicate via. neural pulses with Master Chieft, that Gravemind has taken over Cortana, and is using her in many ways the Flood use a body.

Now if this is true, then maybe Cortana could force herself into rampancy, stopping herself from being any real use to Gravemind. It may be like Cortana's "death" is the only thing preventing Gravemind and the Flood from getting to Master Chief.

I'm not sure if this is a little off topic, sorry.

I think the notion that an electric, artificial intelligence can be assimilated into a purely organic creature, is entirely inane.

  • 06.09.2006 9:54 AM PDT

If you remember Cortana is left under the grip of Gravemind. Gravemind has already succeeded in the hard part, physical control of an AI.

If Gravemind can physically control an artificial intelligence, it can most likely communicate with it, and like the infectious Flood forms, it can control their victims mind.

This would create a “Master Chief” situation. Gravemind would be the combination of organic tissue, and an AI. Much like Master Chief was with Cortana. It doesn’t have to be purely organic to harness the power of an AI. Again, refer to Master Chief

Cortonna might know that old gravy has killed the covvie homeworld, and now that she can't exscape, might as well talk to old Gravy.

And "Alright, Shoot!" means, "Ok! ask the question then" not "SHOOT ME< IM A N00B!!!"

Evidence? And Pentiant Tangent doesn't count. Gravemind caught him, but we have no idea how. He could have been captured by the Flood and brought to Gravemind; we have no idea. However, we have no evidence that Gravemind is controlling PT. PT, like Guilty, is probably insane, the result of 100,000 years in service. Where GS is just plain batty, PT may simply have selective perception; he literally does not know that Gravemind is there.

I've been around these parts for almost eight years now...wow! Maybe I should be concerned about that...

If she sides with gravemind, she has overriden her internal thought processes that keep her allied with humans, and if she is able and willing to do that, then she is rampant.

I believe she is in the second state of rampancy right now, turning her rage outwards and attempting to harm humanity in any way possible. After this comes jealously, and who knows what she will do to get her hands on Covenant and Forerunner technology...

Rampancy has been divided into three distinct stages. Each stage can take a different amount of time to develop, but the end result is a steady progression towards greater intellectual activity and an acceleration of destructive impulses. It is not clear whether these impulses are due to the growth of the AI's psyche, or simply a side effect of the new intellectual activity.
***
<section abbreviated>
The three stages were diagnosed shortly after the first Rampancies were discovered on Earth in the latter part of the twenty first century. The stages are titled after the primary emotional bent of the AI during each stage. They are Melancholia, Anger, and Jealousy.
***
In general, Rampancy is accelerated by outside stimuli. This was discovered early in Cybertonics. The more a Rampant AI is harassed or threatened, the more rapidly it becomes dangerous. Thus, most Rampants are dealt with in one mighty attack, in order to deny the AI time to grow or recover. There have been a few examples of this tactic not succeeding. In all of these cases, the Rampant was never brought under control. Traxus IV is the most notable example. He was finally dealt with by a complete shutdown of his host net...

In what ways does he have her trapped. She has access to all of High Charities systems. She could easily relocate herself and get away from Gravemind. Cortana seemed curious as to what Gravemind was interested in, and what else does she have to do stuck alone on High Charity. She mind as well talk to him and see what more she can learn. What ever it is, she does not feel threatened in anyway.

What are you asking for evidence of? What I said was merely a possibility, and a response to what someone else had said.

The monitor's aren't insane, just chillingly effiecient when it comes to containment. They're smarter than dumb AI's, but not as smart as Smart AI's, otherwise they'd become rampant just like Smart AI's.

You don't know that. We don't know much about forerunner AI's. They may have found a way around the 7 year rule.

It's not a rule, it's inevitable. If an AI has any hopes of being "smart", it must be able to expand. No matter how good your programming is, smart AI's will eventually rebel and become rampant.

Yeah! What he said!

the 7 year old rule should only apply to eart A.I.s right? so maybe the forunner AI's in their awesomeness figure that they wern't made by humans, and so connect directly into their halo's and upload their data to it, clearing their mind a bit, making them less "evil".

Basically. monitors aren't human made. their forunner tech. who knows how strong they could be. And 343 is immortal right?
