Subject: A way to avoid the matchmaking quitter problem in Halo 3

I just want you to know that rocks aren't people.

Poll: Is my quitter's time out plan a good one  [closed]
Yes, I think it would be effective:  56%

Yes, but the idea could use some work:  26%

No, I think it would not be effective.:  3%

No, I just think it is a bad idea:  15%

The short version:

If a person quits a matchmade game, he should not be allowed to join another one until the first one is over or until a predetermined amount of time has passed.

The longer version:

Having a person wait until the game they quit out of was over would be fair for everyone. If a person just does not like the gametype, he would be discouraged from quitting since he may have to wait 10 minutes or more before he can try his luck with getting a gametype he likes. Even if a person thinks his team cannot win, he will probably not want to quit since the alternative would be to just sit around before he can play again. Delevelers would not quit since it would take a LONG time to delevel if they have to wait before they can lose again.

But not everyone who quits is doing it for a bad reason. If someone comes to the door or an important phone call comes, a person may have to stop playing. Kids may have to stop abruptly when their parents make them. There are many valid reasons for having to quit, and these people won't get punished with this system. If you have a valid rason for quitting, then you most likely won't be able to play again until the game is over anyways.

i like the idea
but how the hell could the game decide if the player had a good reason to live ?
dude, it could never work, because if the servers "asks" why the player leave, then the quitter will simply allways choose the option "forced by parents" or whatever, so it wouldnt help anyone
but forbiding players to play for 10mins if they leave game is good

It was only a matter of time for the Halo 2 suggestions to spew over into Halo 3 suggestions....just stop it.

That is just silly. That'll ruin everyone's experience on XBL more-so.

6 Minutes of Hell video here

I like the idea, but it might be a bit too harsh. Maybe 5 minutes for quitting.

If the player HAD to go answer the phone, it would probably take at least 10 minutes, witch would easily be enough time for the "time-out" to wear off.

Or

If the player had to leave because his/her's parents made them, then you would log out of xbox live and it wouldn't be a problem.

Everyone gets the time-out penalty, it's just some of them HAVE the time to off-set it by having to do specific things.

And as for the original poster. I like you my friend, because you are smart.

Im with this guy 400%, thats a great idea and would really cut down on the quitting. id rather get owned while playing then sitting in a pregame lobby doing nothing.

That is a great idea.

The people who posted above me are not understanding...

the server doesn't ask you why you quit...

the guys idea is just that if you start a game... your gunna finish it no matter whether you're playing it or not. I think this is a great idea and of course you could quit a custom game (sometimes they go for about 3 hours) but you could not abandon your team in matchmaking.

I think it is a great idea and the only people who are complaining about it are people who want to be able to leave their team high and dry just cuz they are not having a good game. I get so angry when some poor sport quits cuz he doesn't care and we are all left a man down.

Andn the de-leveling would stop too because who wants to de-level when each game takes ten minutes. The only de-levelers would be committed.

I think this is a good idea, so please don't flame the poster without understanding the actual idea.

good idea, I say 10 minutes.

Why so long, because the only reason you should be quiting is because something important came up. So if its important, you wouldn't be there to wait 10 minutes anyway !

Maybe they should incorporate a "If you have less than X kills and you quit, you don't loose experience", witch would force the de-levelers to acually play the game.(And for those who just started a game, but are forced to quit from some other means)

But then again, that may be bad for some other reason, not concerning de-levelers.

I like the idea, but the problem is...what happens when you get someone on your team who is purposly trying to lose, or your oppenents are cheating in some way (Trust me -blam!- hackers will find a way) then what. Now you have to sit there playing an unfun game for 10 -20 min, or quit out and wait in the lobby instead. You got the right idea but its got to be fixed up a bit.

Maybe allow someone to join in progress, so if someone quits they are replaced by someone else imediately and automatically.

Almost forgot. We really dont know what bungie is gonna do for xbl ne wayz. We may not even see a matchmaking in H3. Who knows...???

the only bad idea to this idea is how do you tell why they left. i mean there is a thousand ways they could drop a power flash and there modem resets or there connection to host i so bad there is no reason to stay. It is bad when people quite but what are you gonna do it is a game

It wouldn't work.

If you get a deleveler on your team, and you and your teammates decide to leave because it wouldn't be worth playing, the people who left would have to wait until the deleveler would stop deleveling. I think that some people would do this on purpose just to get on other peoples' nerves if this were added.

Horrible idea. There are many reasons people quit, and they shouldn't be punished for lagging out, or have to sit there through cheaters and delevelers.

What about if you would quit after you have reported a cheater, you wouldn't have to wait those 10 mins?

This is not really a punishment. If the game lags out, then you have to wait 5 or 10 min to play again. That really is not so bad. But people who are quitting because they are selfish won't want to quit because quitting would end up being worse than sticking it out.

  • 06.09.2006 10:09 AM PDT

Halo's a hell of a drug.

Make an exception that if you quit to join a party, then that's okay. Here's why?

I'm in the middle of a match and I get an invite to join a friends party that I've been waiting for. Well do I wait my friend wait 10 minutes for me to finish up or do I quit and get punished for quitting? I say allow quitting if people jump into parties, where they can immediately play a game.

Halo 3 (31st), ODST (14th) and Reach (4th) Mythic Conqueror. (Mythic is Solo, Legendary, All skulls on + scoring on and no deaths/saves).

Ignorance is the true enemy of all things.

Rocking Bungie.net for over 8 years!

It is a good idea (or some variaton of the idea is very good) but it has been discussed before. And in much greater detail.

Plus, if you lag out, you wouldn't be quitting would you? You'd be being kicked cus you lost the connection etc.

And about delevelers. Halo 3 will use the Tru-skill ranking system. While i'm not entirely sure how it works, it is more difficult to just delevel. You'd have to sustain really bad play for a very long time to drop. Not something that many people would be willing to do out of choice. And the tru-skill is better at ranking you more quickly when you start to your true level.

the only problem with having to wait 5 or 10 minutes is if you only have time for one game you get in a room leave cause of a deleveler or whatever the you have to wait 10 min. well i guess your not gonna play that one game

But what if I'm just really lazy and don't play? I just stand there in the game and get killed...racking up kills for the other team and not fighting back... This will happen much more.
