Subject: Most overrated character in the Halo series?

The Chief, because he's barely a character. He's more of a walking suit of armor, that doesn't speak more than a sentence or 2 of total words in each game.

I hope they go all-out in Halo 4 and flesh out his character & personality. The Chief's non-personality is likely the single biggest flaw of the entire series...besides the ending of Halo 2.

besides the ending of Halo 2.

By calling Halo 2's ending a flaw, you insinuate that you wanted the series to end at that with no Halo 3, ODST, Halo 4 etc following it... I'm glad Halo 2's ending was, as you put it, "flawed" because we'd have never had things like Forge, Theatre or Firefight if the series ended at 2.

This.

The real disappointment has to be how none of these innovations have been implemented in the older games (CE, H2), other than on PC (map editor, Custom Edition). 343 didn't even provide Blind skull in CEA to compensate for the lack of Theater. :(

You can honestly say that, while keeping a straight face, that Noble Team is more overrated than Master Chief? Even though almost every argument about who is better between Noble Six/Team or Master Chief I see on this forum includes a whole mob of angry pre-pubescent Master Chief fantards ganging up on the Noble/Reach fans with a bunch of snide comments to the degree of "well MC didn't diez lolololz" and almost every poll I see is somewhere in the range of MC-66.6% with Noble getting somewhere around 33.3% always.

You can honestly say that, despite Cortana having full access to Master Chief's vital systems 96% of the time, despite Arbiter being physically, technologically, and skillfully matched damn near with Master Chief, with Didact possessing technology so many lightyears more advanced then Master Chief's, with Frederic coming in second in damn near almost every competition, with Noble Six breaking entire militia and covenant organizations, with Noble Team having a monument (as in Washington Monument style "Monument" literal "Monument") erected in their honor, despite 343 Guilty Spark coming within a hair's breadth of killing the Chief after bringing him to his -blam!- knees, a little orb of light barely larger than my goddam television screen, you can honestly say with a straight face that Noble Team is more overrated than Master Chief, or any character for that matter? You're crazy.

U mad bro?

Sounds like somebody hasn't read The Fall of Reach. Seriously, it improved my opinion of him quite a bit.

Haha, yeah, he really is mad. Talk about Noble Team fantard.

Oh and don't expect him to have read any of the fiction. You can tell by his ridiculously idiotic posts that he clearly knows nothing of the lore.

How do these personal attacks make you any better than me? And no I am not angry I can assure I wrote that with a relatively straight face, maybe it is your wet dream to someday make me angry. I don't know, and another thing I don't know is how you could write this flamishly childish remark and expect people to rally blindly behind you, which they did not, and get away without a post reporting, which you did not.

Fredric-104 or Noble Six. I'd really like to see more backstory to both and a continued place in the Halo fiction for Fred. Glasslands touches on Fred a little, which is nice.

You honestly can say with a straight face that Noble Six is more overrated than Master Chief?
Well yeah.. any body can.

Because, well.. You know.. He's not real. (Canon-wise.)

Uhh.. Last time I checked, Noble Six isn't mentioned in The Fall Of Reach. Annnd, Noble Six's "canon" is strictly held to Halo: Reach. (Again.. Not real. Just a character created and tossed into the game. The same goes for Emile, I believe.)

As much as I love him, I'd have to say Buck.

What exactly makes him a good soldier again? How is he close to being a Spartan?

The world may never know.

HERESY! Heh, Buck is the BEST! How is he a good soldier? How about pulling his team back together to succeed at a mission he didn't even know the parameters of, after it went completely -blams-up fubar? That seems pretty good soldiery to me! And that's disregarding entirely that he was able to complete a top secret mission in the middle of a Covenant controlled city AS it's being glassed!

Heh, I know he may not be the most fleshed out character in the Halo franchise. But I also know that he's the character I would most WANT to be fleshed out. All kinds of pleasing flesh... mmmmm.

/endrant
heh.

Just to clarify, a lightyear is a measurement of distance, not time. So is a parsec for that matter, which rather conplicates the line "It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs"...

Interestingly, it doesn't actually cause any problems for that statement. Yes a parsec is a measure of distance, and Han was referencing the speed of the Millennium Falcon. But what is left mostly unsaid is the fact that the Kessel Run takes place in a sector of space called the Maw. An astronomical area that has an overabundance of black holes in close proximity to one another.

As you can imagine all of these massive space phenoms can wreak havoc with the local gravitational fields. Consequently ships that wish to fly the "Kessel Run" must take a very carefully plotted, very set route of 'x Parsecs'.

Now because the M. Falcon is so stinking fast, Solo has been able to chart a modified route through the Maw getting closer to certain grav-fields. He can afford to get closer to the black holes because with his greater velocity he'll be able to punch his way back out of a grav-field after the slingshot maneuver. Shaving x amount of distance off of the normal "Kessel Run" hence:

"She's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs."

Not only is the feat a study in daring-do, but it's also a miracle of astro-navigation. Proving that not only is Han Solo a badass, but also pretty smart too.

tl/dr: Han Solo is boss bro.

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Funny, Noble Team is mentioned in Glasslands, the Halo Essential Visual Guide and 343 Industries themselves. Course I wouldn't expect them to be in a book that released with the first game. By your logic, since the Brutes weren't mentioned in TFoR, they don't exist.

Believe. Bungie.

I think the big deal is that through out the games MC is definitively set to be an overrated character who can just kick anybody's ass, but when it come's to the books i like to think they give more light as to how normal he really is. I believe I remember reading somewhere how a fully charged plasma pistol shot could be felt boiling his armor/skin, this gives a good idea of how he must fight to survive when up against the covenant(intelligently/strategically). I can honestly say i am a Chief fan just because of his character through the books and the games. A bad-ass soldier who reaches his limits from time to time but ultimately strikes successfully when he finds the correct opportunity. It gives the reader the sense that he knows his boundaries after while and plays to his strong points. At least that's my two cents.

Edit: And whats with the reporting, you have a trade of bad words with another on BNet and want him punished instead of just realizing you are both mad over who you want to defend. Have you even been on Halo multiplayer chat, its nothing but trading foul words with someone else.

That is genuinely the most interesting thing I have learned in a good month or so!

I will quickly throw more metaphorical wood onto this blazing debate in order to stay on topic: OT: Master Chief, whilst limited by his 'man of few words'/'strong, silent type' persona is undeniably important not just within the plot of the games and books, but also as a poster boy for the franchise. He's incredibly iconic; can he really be considered overrated?!

Going by this guy's theory... Anybody who appeared in a single form of canon = not real. Just tossed in.

Last time I checked, The Fall of Reach covered the LAST day of the battle, not the invasion prior, and last time I checked, the game canon was above novel canon. (I guess Kurt was also non-canon, seeing how he was just mentioned in Ghosts of Onyx for training the Spartan III's and all).

  • 06.21.2012 5:26 AM PDT

John. His character need a lot more depth in the games. Most of the time, he just feels like an avatar you're controlling and not an actual person. He was okay in CE and Halo 2, but in Halo 3 he spoke very rarely and you find yourself asking why he's so popular.

I hope the Reclaimer trilogy is going to develop him as a character.

  • 06.21.2012 7:31 AM PDT

GREENMAN!!

Even though I don't dislike his character, I'm going to say the Chief. It seems like a lot of his fans are ignorant to a lot of the rest of the Halo universe (not all of them, of course).
I like the Chief, but he is kind of overrated.
