Subject: Why has trolling not been made a bannable offense?...

Key

Mainly because anyone who claims they can define "troll" or "trolling" (in the context of the internet, not the mythical creature), is either very naïve, or just trolling.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Because no one on this site knows what trolling is.

Because that'd actually involve reading the forums to the point of knowing who/what each poster is. Far too much to ask.

It's not about how you do it, it's about who you are that determines if you get banned or not.

Trust me, I've been on here longer than pretty much all of you and I was a moderator, so I should know.

You do know that I can see you?

*grin*

PS: your post may have been too subtle for some.

The reports don't get into the report queue until after a certain number of people have hit the report button.

Yes that does make it kind of useless but it's high to prevent people from abusing it.

Who the hell do you think I am?

Everyone has their own interpretations of trolling, so there would be no accurate way to ban somebody if they were "trolling".

  • 06.12.2012 10:44 AM PDT

agreed a happy troll makes a forum better.

  • 06.12.2012 11:07 AM PDT

I suspect llamas are secretly wizards. I <3 poptarts n' milk. I like me. Grimick is defined as: a logical parodox, the act of funnaling a potato down your throat, and a deliciously flavored muffin (with pecons and blueberries). Norway is the Swedish word for 'moron'. My sister has cancer, so i get to use handicap parking and cut small children in line at Disneyland.

"Don't eat doughnuts on thin ice."

"The pancake, my friend, has officially been flipped."

Yeah, in case not enough people have said this: it would be really hard to set a standard for trolling because trolling is subjective and every troll is different.

Love the fact that a vet ex-mod of these forums just comes out & says that mods favour certain people when most will just flatly lie about it. If I could give you rep, I would.

Trolling should be allowed inside The Flood unless it is harmful i.e. delete sys32, nsfw links etc as trolling, in my view as somebody who watches trolls & has never participated, can be amusing for outsiders to watch & actually makes the forums more amusing. Trolling elsewhere should be swiftly dealt with, with a ban.

See? I just knew that post could/would be read and interpreted differently by different people.

I heard soft and subtle sarcasm and a slightly more overt attempt to outrage by a taunting closing statement.

At least that is what I got out of it. You appear to have taken it literally.

Such is the way of text on screen and why one man's troll is another man's sarcasm or snarkiness. So much is dependent on the viewer to decide and make a call, and there are usually as many interpretations as there are readers/responders.

Fair enough, you probably know him better than I do (opinion still stands, however).

As you say, "trolling" can be interpreted differently by people - so would you agree that a flat out removal of "trolling" bans in The Flood would be the best thing to do, long term?

Not really.

Since it is in the eye of the beholder, my point would be that the eyes of the Ninja are trusted by our hosts to enforce compliance with the Membership Agreement.

So, if I see something that crosses the line (admittedly it's MY line), I still think that I can/should act. Just like members are encouraged to report as they see fit, I am similarly empowered, though my power is ever so slightly more powerful.

In the end, we all have to decide for ourselves. IMO, if Bungie wanted to issue a "weapons free command" in The Flood, then they would disable the report feature in that forum. Until something like that happens (and I doubt that it will) both members and ninja are empowered and encouraged to use their judgement.

When trolling is done correctly it is great fun for everybody.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Where would you say your 'line' is?

NSFW, anything that would get someone reprimanded, fired or scolded if they had it on their screen at work or in front of their parents. If it is a topic, something that you wouldn't discuss in front of colleagues, coworkers, your boss, or your bosses boss (or a customer).

I'm relatively pretty tolerant, I certainly don't have thin skin. I am nearly unsquickable, but I know when something is inappropriate for this site. Certainly, my line has moved over the years, usually due to Bungie staff or my colleagues pointing out an inconsistency or point that I had not considered before.

IMO, this is a fun, friendly place, unlike most others on the Internet. If I preferred something more rough and tumble, more mature (in content or conduct), I can/will/do have the ability to visit and enjoy those sorts of sites. But I like to think that I know to wipe my feet (and what to leave outside) whenever I come into this house.
