Subject: New Hawtness: Tagging members in posts.

"There's daggers in men's smiles." - Donalbain, Macbeth, Act II, scene iii

Example: @Iggyhopper@CAVX: if this feature is left out of the New Hawtness, you should, you know, pull uncanny brilliance out of your ass and make a script.

SUMMARY
This feature would allow B.net users to tag other users in a post. The tag would look like this: @User; and the tag would be engaged by using an '@' sign directly before the username text. This is similar to the tagging system used in Facebook. When a user is tagged, he/she receives a notification with a direct link to the post in which the tagging took place.

RULES AND GENERAL INFORMATION (this will be updated)
-[rule]Do not use tags for spam. Only use a tag when it is relevant and necessary.
-Absent members cannot be tagged in a post.

ACCOUNT SETTINGS - TAGS (there will be a tab for tagging and notification settings) (this will be updated)
-Turn tag notifications on or off.
-Allow tags. (if set to disallow, user cannot be tagged in a post)
-Allow tags if you have not posted in the thread. (the user can only be tagged in threads that the user has posted in)
-Allow specific members to tag me. (only members specified by the user are allowed to tag the user in a post)

-End summary

Tags would allow for an easy way to let users know that they're being talked about. Imagine logging in to Bungie.net and being able to see every post in which you were mentioned, and you can also see relevant topics that other people have tagged you in for the sake of discussion. As far as I can tell, a tagging system would do no harm to Bungie.net.

I'd hate to be that guy, but isn't that copied straight from Facebook?

Nonetheless. I think it would be quite useless. How many people do you know on here anyway?

One problem... we don't have a notification system.

Thanks for the tag, came here as soon as I got the notification.
But sorry, haven't you heard? I don't pull things out of there anymore.

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

It's a good idea, but i would rather just have a notification system for when someone quotes you.

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

this. And I would like to be notified when certain specific words or phrases are uttered on Bnet.

  • 06.13.2012 2:35 AM PDT

That would be awesome! Hope we do get notifications ect.

the only problem i have with mine is that it's unstable,[very shakey],so you'd need a tripod for it.

Just drink a beer and everything will be ok

I have no idea how this could work in a script. Wouldn't it have to scan every single post on B.Net looking for @username?

I doubt I'd really have a use for this as I don't post so much that I am unable to remember where I posted. If I post something as part of a discussion, I'll look back in that thread to see what happened.

Otherwise, I don't really care what other people say about me - there's always the pm system for urgent matters.

We should know better, because we are better.

Problem is a lot of members just shorten my name to Xd. I doubt anyone would use this tagging filter when they can just say "Xd said blah blah blah." If this notification feature was used for quotes it would work better.

  • 06.13.2012 4:49 AM PDT

I read the thread title as "teabagging" members in post.

What I found instead was significantly less interesting than what I was hoping for.

No, just no.

The reason that tags are not abused on facebook is because people don't want their friends to hate them. Spammers and trolls with random accounts could tag random people on this site and it wouldn't matter if the people being tagged hated them or not.

The idea is not bad. But to save abuse, you could just link someone's account and send them a message to your post.

@spawn031

We should also limit posts to 140 characters as well ;)

In all seriousness though, this is exactly the way twitter works. They're called "@" or "at" mentions, and when you get mentioned, it's listed under your "@" mentions. You're basically "tagged" in a tweet/post. For bungie.net, I could see it useful as someone who tends to the website often.

For users that sign up for an account and don't really know the community regulars etc, they wouldn't use it. I think a tagging system in general - maybe not on users, but threads rather - would be a better fit for this shoe. It would also have it's uses in a new searchbar.

The system he's talking about is actually straight from Twitter. Not that that makes it a bad thing, it's just utilizing a good feature that someone else thought of. If Bungie.net had thought of all the features on the site that people are suggesting we'd be the one stop shop for new heads of marketing at all the biggest social networks.

That's why it's better of Bungie just puts notifs and tagging on the site as a feature.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I like the idea, since it would give us another way to respond to people without having to quote them (it's useful if you're responding to multiple people with a post, it would take much less time to format the whole thing, especially if they have long posts that you only want part of).

A better way to prevent abuse than a rule would be a feature that prevents you from tagging anyone who hasn't posted in the thread. There is really no reason to reply to anyone who hasn't posted, spammers can't post every name they can think of, and if you wanted to show anyone else the thread you could just PM them.

Perhaps this could be one of the security options in the 'Tag options' setting in your account management panel.

How about a list of people allowed to tag you in threads? Or settings to not allow you to be tagged in posts?

Indeed.

To be fair, I edited your 'specific user' idea into the OP before I quoted the OP. Like a ninja.

They could make DS a notification type thing. So every time you are tagged you get some type of pm from DS. Of coarse you should be ble to disable the notification system.

  • 06.13.2012 8:10 PM PDT

Sure, if you can manage to make it so random people can't get me notified of stuff.
