Subject: What's up with all that gas?

In many Forerunner structures large containers of gas are seen throughout. They are also seen in the multiplayer level, Containment. With that, the Halo’s were built around gas giants. Could it be that maybe the Forerunners developed some kind of weapon to use towards the Flood, possibly a “bug spray” like defense? In the Multiplayer Map Pack Extras, someone at Bungie says that the Forerunners where “harvesting” the gas. What could it be used for, and what was its purpose?

I’m almost positive this has not been explained in any of the games or books, but I could have missed it.

Well I think at least some of the gas goes towards the grunts, since the bright blue stuff is seen in both the grunts gas pack as well as the apparently forunner made structures. It might be a foreunner structure intended for different uses but the covenant have adapted it to make methane so the grunts can breathe.

One level in which you play as the arbiter, you go down a long shaft via an elevator that is constantly moving around containers that hold flood infection forms in them. Maybe that is the conveyor belt's original purpose?

Yea I know, the level you're talking about is colossus, possibly after the covenant have assimilated it and turned it into a methane producing facility.
