A common misconception is that Installation 05 was activated when infact it was not. Whether or not you saw a beam shoot into a ball in the center of the Halo and explode is quite irrelevant. It did not go off. Remember when you were battling Tartarus and your team members were pressuring Guilty Spark for a way to stop it from going off? He finally said that he recommended that the "Reclaimer," simply remove the Index. And she did. So ultimately, we have never seen a Halo go off.

i think he was talking about the halo going off that killed the forunners, and btw 3 radii of the galactic center wont wipe out the entire universe... just whats in and another 50% outward of the galaxy.

but listen to what Penitent Tangent said about the radii thing. And also, remeber that halo was activated before and destroyed all sentient life within 3 radii of the galactic center so......
Oh. I thought you were referring to current day Halo. I would have to say that everyone was simply out of range.

Assuming that all the halos are in the same galaxy, (ours) I'd have to say that we are well within range of a weapon with the capacity to destroy all sentient life within three galactic radii of the galaxy. One glactic radius = the distance from the center of the galaxy to the edge, now multiply that by three and you get the destructional capacity of the halos being fired.

We live on the Ark, we are out of range.

Why are we still alive? That, I am unfortunately unable to answer. It is possible that the forerunner were more of an alliance than one race. Perhaps they had the technology to defend themselves against the halos, regroup, and then repopulate the galaxy. Then along the line, the alliance was forgotten, and here we are today. But that is getting ahead of the root of this thread, sorry.

Never Underestimate the Power of Nerds.

Our solar system is at the edge of the Milky Way, so Earth may have been out of range.

It's highly unlikely that Earth was, "out of range." The halos, when simultaneously fired, have the capacity to wipe out life in the entire galaxy, and a portion of the Clouds of Magellan. If you're not familiar with our galactic neighborhood, the Clouds of Magellan are two large clouds of star clusters orbiting our galaxy.

Evolution, and I don't think that Earth is out of range, since it has a artifact in it. I believe the Gravemind says that he's been around for millennia so it's a safe bet to say that, even before the dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the forerunners were already on it, or the Halos are what originally killed the dinosaurs. Haha wow that be crazy if the original idea for Halo came from a discussion about dinosaurs.

Well, the fact of the matter is the last halo firing was 100,000 years ago, and what ever life was left has evolved into us and the covenant. Or, the evolutionary cycle was assited by the ark. We don't really know yet.

100,000 years ago, early humans existed and were migrating off of the separating single-continent Pangea.

Hm.the Index must have an important role. It is commonly believed that the Index contains mapped DNA genomes of life forms throughout the galaxy. No, in fact, not common belief. It was practically said by Bungie(the definition in the banner of The Library) To activate Halo, one would need the Index. Thus, it is possible that the Index reseeds the galaxy of life. Of course there were survivors after the last activation of Halo. Since Halo was never really activated in both games(although I think it will be inevitably), the true function of the Index is never known other than that it is the key to Halo.

You have free time... do you spend it or save it?

but the halos were activated a while ago, when they destroyed all the Forerunners

I don't know if any of you guys read the 'Forerunner' article in the Game Informer (which they swear was no joke) but they were saying that the story may be affected by the actions and accomplishments of the player. With that said, what if during the game we are given a time limit to shut down a Halo, but fail. Maybe we will get to see the sucker blow, errrr what exactly does it do again? I don't think it's any form of explosion becaues the planets are untouched.
