Because that's how YouTube works. You would click one of those two options and clicking it would do the action you've chosen.

He's demonstrating their functionality, not their actual use.

This means that I could not leave my computer on this website for an hour and come back because the battery would be draining seeking new information from the internet that I don't care about. Perhaps this will be among the updated designs and features in the site's upcoming re-unveiling.

I myself don't like auto-updating. So if this feature is added, hopefully it can be toggled off.
