It could be a lot better with big maps.

Bigger maps? I like how you think. They need a map that uses the canyon and island on forge.

  • 06.17.2012 10:36 PM PDT

It is the best map ever! I always get the ghost, and I get like 30 kills. Way to go BTB Heavies!

Sorry, I meant Asphalt.

OK gametype. Dog-pile maps...

Rasu is OK actually, forgiving my strange hatred of scorpions and falcons on the same map. Asphalt looks OK, but has too many fundamental flaws. All other maps are garbage they put together in 5-minutes.

Really? Look, it's not that we are stupid, it's that we don't like the same thing you like. I don't think you are stupid for being competitive. I'm not at all competitive and thus I don't care about any of the things you think are important for good Halo play.

Take me for example. I don't strafe, I don't use the scope, I don't snipe, I don't assassinate. I recognize the importance of these things to achieving a good score, but I don't care. Along those lines, I love heavies. I prefer all rockets games which Reach sadly has very few of. The most fun I have ever had at Halo is playing all rockets games in Halo CE one after another for hours. It's what I like, to each his own.

Halo: Reach is the beginning of a new age for gaming.
It proves that developers can get away with punishing their players instead of fixing their game....and yet the fanboys will still sing praises to them.

People like you are the reason I have such a high # of betrayals in Halo 2 & 3.

You people want to try and force me to play Rockets only....fine.

Soon as the game starts, I'm going to immediately start blowing up my own team until I get kicked out of it. Seeing as how quitting out of matches is frowned upon.

----------------

See this people. This is why matchmaking HAS TO GO!
Matchmaking only cares about skill levels.

Well guess what? This guys skill at Rockets only gametypes matches mine in what I enjoy playing. So obviously, since our skill levels are the same... we must enjoy playing the same kind of stuff .... right?

WRONG!

Skill levels are not even a proper method of matching players up. Because there is something much more important that takes precedence over matching up according to skill levels.

What do you like to play? IE. Match according to gametype/map preferences first and foremost. Which Matchmaking does not. (Playlist that have multiple gametype/map combo's that have absolutely nothing in common with each other buried under a single playlist, [BTB], is not a substitute for Server Browsers)

What I like is more important than the skill levels of the players involved. When you idiot "competitives" figure this out... let me know.

Here's another example:

Shortly after Reach became a flop. I decided I'd rather play some BFBC2.

I immediately gravitated towards a map called 'Heavy Metal'
I also gravitated towards the same exact server. And played on that particular server every time.

When I first started playing, I sucked horribly. Going something like -30 on a good day. Eventually, I improved..and I now consider myself one of the top players amongst that server. (It took me about 2 weeks to get there) I do not quit out of matches because of skill levels. I quit because I don't like the map or gametype.

Matchmaking doesn't care what you like. It herds you into a handful of playlist like your a bunch of cows going to the slaughter house.

TL:DR
Matchmaking needs to emphasise what people want/like to play, instead of choosing for them based on their skill level. And making them have to fight a vote.

I do have to ask if you actually read this in your head before writing it.

If I want slayer games, I'll pick the slayer categories.
If I want objectives, I'll go into objective.
Invasion? Invasion playlist etc.

Only thing that gets "fought over" is more often than not, the map that it's going to be played on.

Slayer playlist is about the only logical thing you just posted.

As for the objective playlist.

I'm not going to bother to research what it currently spits out, but tell me...

How many different types of objectives are buried into that playlist. Most likely they have a CTF, Assault, Oddball, KotH, etc. etc. In which...they qualify for being buried into that playlist along with everything else because they all somehow classify as having a secondary objective associated with them.

But they have NOTHING in common with each other beyond that.

CTF is a much different gametype than playing Assault.

Look at BTB as the example.

Did you realize that 8v8 gametypes is actually a preference
Now look at how many DIFFERENT gametype/maps (most of em complete trash) are buried under that single playlist.

IE. Smart developers do this.

KOTH playlist
ODDBALL Playlist
CTF Playlist
Assault playlist.

Instead of this:

Objective playlist.

Smart developers don't give a -blam!- about spreading the population out. Because they realize if you try to force them to feed from same dirty trough as everyone else. People will quit.'

Guess what, If I still played this game, and BTB tries to lock me into a Rockets only gametype. Expect me to start betraying ... IMMEDIATELY!

More often than not. Reach has you fighting a vote for both the map AND the gametype. At least in CoD you for sure without a doubt...only fight over what map your going to play on. You are gauranteed the gametype. Because IW and 3Arc are at least smart enough to seperate their playlists by gametype.

BTB Heavies, is one of those things that deserves to have it's own dedicated playlist.

Do you really think it makes any difference if suddenly the people who prefer playing rockets only gametypes are no longer populating my preferred playlist... no! not in the slightest.

The game might of had more varied playlists if it was worth it.

Splitting a 200 player base playlists into 5 categories isn't worth the time nor effort and would only server to clog up the playlists....... list.

BTB could use an objective only variant.. kinda wana play things other than HomoRage slayer and heavies.

Lets say there only 2 types of players.

There are slayers
And there are objective players.

I'm going to simplify things and avoid making multiple playlist that spread the population out, by making only one playlist.

I'm going to bury slayer and objective into one playlist. Because obviously making 2 seperate playlist would spread the population out...right?

It doesn't matter what the population of the game is.

If there was only 200 people playing the game. Does it matter that half of them are populating another playlist? NO! All that matters is that the playlist I prefer gets enough people to actually get a game going and that everyone in that playlist is happy.

Playlist in Halo make people angry. Because in the grand scheme of things the entire thing is analagous to my example of making 1 playlist instead of 2.

Again I go back to where I say that if I get locked into a Rockets only gametype. I will betray.

Knowing that information..wouldn't it be in your best interest to seperate Rockets Only into it's own playlist. To avoid forcing someone like me to play it at random occasions? That way you for sure know, Everyone in the rockets only playlist is there to play it. And I never have to deal with it.

IE. you can force 200 people into 1 playlist and half of them attempt to ruin it. Or you can split them up and make everyone happy.

Spreading the population too thin is no excuse to not do things the proper way.

No idea why would even say so.

Halo also offers allot of playlists for nearly every taste a player can have.
Sure there could be more, but the massive quantity of playlists currently available in Halo shouldn't have anyone complaining.

Then you're being selfish.

BTB needs this

BTB CTF
BTB KotH
BTB Oddball
BTB Slayer
BTB V.I.P. (It differes from oddball thus qualifies for it's own)
BTB Assault
BTB Neutral Assault

Split 200 people amongst that and realize. You only need 16 people with reasonable connections to get a game going. If any of those playlist happen to have less than that...who cares. Keep it up there anyway. It's not harming anyone or anything. Because that only at most 15 people not populating one of the other playlists.

And god forbid if one of those playlist doesn't have the required # of players at that moment in time, you can choose one of the many other BTB specific playlist instead.

PC gets away with having 1,000x more specific playlist than this with populations that don't even come close to what Reach still currently has.

Server Browsers = Every server can be considered it's very own, very specific playlist.

How many servers does a typical PC multiplayer game have? And remember to keep in mind the population of PC multiplayer games isn't even in the same ballpark as something like Halo's population. Halo has far more.

So explain to me why something with 10x more population has to have 10x less playlists?

Name's John. I'm a 21-year-old firefighter/EMT from lolhio who doubles as a die-hard Halo fan. I've been enjoying the franchise since 2001. My favorite iteration of Halo would have to be Halo 2 simply because I never got to experience the joy of a full-on Halo: CE LAN.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, and boot Zome.

The weapon and vehicle sets are hilariously bad along with a good portion of the maps, but I still have fun.

Then do the same for anniversary as well as the current objective playlist.
MLG has a couple of objective games so add a few there.
Also, Reach doesn't have VIP but it does have head hunter and speed flag.

That's close to 30 playlists should all of them see the light of day.

I'll speak for myself here, but playing against the same amount of people over and over again sounds boring as hell, especially if I should be playing against a full party.
A playlist needs a healthy amount of people to be successful.

If your game hovers above 75k players, and not even 500 plays a certain playlist, then said playlist should either see an overhaul, playlist merge or complete removal.
Of course you should always have the basic options available.

Quality of the playlist > quantity of playlists.

I'd rather have a few single playlists that do fairly well over a multitude that are on life support.

While Halo, and probably other games, could get away with a server browser, it shouldn't replace the MM system entirely.

Should I go into ranked playlists, last thing I want is for random drop in/drop out filled games.

Custom game browser or hell, even the more "social" ones could probably benefit from this but again, it shouldn't come at the cost of removing the MM system entirely.

I don't like BTB Heavies simply due to the fact that almost all of the maps on Halo Reach aren't compatible for the gametype. For example, BTB Heavies on Spire doesn't really work out so well.
