Subject: Forum for serious discussions?

I notice on the flood that occasionally they'll be a user that wished to discuss religion or politics or some other serious matter that isn't permitted or just doesn't go over very well in the flood. I tried searching to see if anyone else has had the same idea (and I'm sure they have) but I couldn't find much using the search feature. So I was wondering what the community would think if Bungie was to introduce a new forum for philosophical and political discussion. Of course such a forum would have to have a slightly stricter set of rules than the normal forums, but I think that the community should be able to voice their opinions on such matters as long as it is done respectfully. Thoughts?

Yeah that'd be a wonderful idea. They'd have to come up with some clever name for it though.

I suggest The Black Chapter would be a great name.

Who the hell do you think I am?

There are plenty of active private groups for that purpose. You can use those just fine.

Man of God. Fan of Bungie. Eater of many Jr. Bacon cheeseburgers.

I imagine a group for this would be popular if you could get it off the ground. I would shoot for that.

In other words: join the private group: "The Black Chapter".

But that requires joining and then having people control it instead of Bungie. I like OP's idea.

True, but group activity fluctuates and is often inconsistent. Groups are also simply less used than the main forums, and then not everyone can participate as some might be closed or simply dead or a user might (though not likely) have filled up their group allowance. Making it a main forum would allow for more varied and interesting discussions than private groups as they could be accessed more easily and by more people.

Being serious, having a public relgion/politics forum with a stricter ruleset would be terrible. If anything they should be loosened, because there is only so many ways you can pretty up 'that idea/philosopy/third option that escapes me is stupid and wrong'. And sometimes that is the simplest response.

The politically minded folk on this site includes many abrasive personalities, if this was implemented let them run free. They're going to do it anyway, so trying to soften them for the benefit of making it more welcoming to new folk is pointless. Let them jump right in the deep end or sit on the sidelines until they're comfortable with having elmicker tell them that they're wrong and stupid and should just stop now.

This thread would have appealed to me more if it was written with crayons.

The Black Chapter is probably the best place for that sort of thing, you'll probably find more respect and balanced arguments than a Call of Duty topic in the flood anyway.

True, it could also serve to "soften" some of the more abrasive types by having equally abrasive people respond. It might be heated at first, but eventually it's possible that everyone would learn their place after the first few days or weeks. But on the other hand trolling and flaming could go on the rise if loosely moderated. Instead perhaps the solution lies somewhere in the middle? go loose on certain rules such as flaming but go hard on trolling?

This idea has been presented here time and time again, but the answer is always the same. I understand that an entire forum for users that behave and can talk about those kind of subjects does exist on the internet, but it's not on bungie.net.

You have to think of what this website is, it's a video game developer's online forum. The reason most (if not all) of us are here in the first place is because of the development of some Bungie related video game.

Someone mentioned "The Black Chapter" which is a private group dedicated to such discussion. But creating an entire forum as a "main" forum for the intent of this discussion would just be unpractical.

In short: If you want to discuss those topics, there are other places to do so on the internet. Just not bungie.net.

Very true. I think it would be the cause of a lot of banning just because of how intense people get (especially over the internet where there are little to no repercussions). Ninja's would have some bloody hammers.

  • 06.18.2012 8:11 PM PDT

But trolling is already banned so there is no need to even consider tightening the rules.

It is also quite unlikely that it'd soften folk. The handful of users I could see dominating this forum have been butting heads for some time now, and if anything it probably intensifies it as people become more set in their view that their opposites really are that stupid. On that note, this is a bad idea. The key word there is handful. It is visible with a quick stroll through any of the larger threads that skirt the political line that at best you could probably round up 20 regulars. If you want political discussion on the mains, let it into the flood, as 20 regulars isn't enough to generate much activity in a single topic forum.

EDIT: Just for giggles, lets see if I can even come up with those 20 regulars

elmicker
PA
Rac
GM8
Garland
Naked Noob
Economics/whatever his actual name is. The economics bloke with the default avatar.
RN54
Telec
Tom T <-Iffy, but I imagine he'd be a semi-regular given more discussion.

That is 10 and now I'm struggling to think of anyone who's been consistent over a reasonable period of time. There is a handful more, but I'd have more trouble than I thought coming up with 20 major names. Given the list is essentially TBC Britsquad plus their opposite numbers, I can't see an entire forum working out too well. (Pluse a couple on that list are perma'd I think)

"I would kill to get a killionaire... 10 times... digitally."

Now whats to stop the floodians from going to that forum? In case you have not visited the flood recently, their is a lot of getting away with stuff there. While it would be nice to have a public place to discuss stuff seriously, it would just end up being abused in the same way that the flood is. It's the "Off Topic" forum, not the "Post whatever the hell you want forum".

I don't know. I see a lot of threads in the flood that could be taken as political or evolve into religious or political discussions, often ignored by the moderators until they get heated. I think it would see a lot of use. But ultimately I think I need to listen to you and the other folk here who have been here longer than I have. I'll admit that there are those here who know the community far better than I do.

Let me direct you to a couple other threads that mention the same thing you're proposing.

Religious thread or no religious thread?
Political/Religious discussion currently prohibited in groups

Those ones are fairly recent. Overall, you have to keep in mind the intended audience of this website (And with just the forums, there are a lot more readers than posters on any given day). I'm sure there are other reasons that only the webteam knows on why they don't want to even get involved with political/religious discussion. Their answers have always been a straight no.

There are a lot of private groups that cater to those who want to discuss "taboo" topics.
