Subject: Halo as Skyrim

Just probing the minds of the community.

I've always wanted a FPS Halo game as vast as Skyrim, but does eveyone else think the same? Would you be interested? What would you like to see in it?

I've always thought that you should be able to play as either a human or as a member of the Covenant. And that it should be an MMO. Lag would be an issue with the current technology, but if it improved enough would you buy it?

You are looking for The Flood. You will probably get more responses there too.

OT: It would be pretty cool to have an FPS MMO Halo game.

Sure, I would give it a shot.

The Flood forum is for matters that don't relate to Halo, etc. This does.

But I'd love 343i to have a bash at making one at some point in the not too distant future.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

There was a MMO based on Halo planned...thank god it didn't see the light of day.

  • 06.19.2012 5:53 AM PDT

I certainly would! Exploration often feels like a key part of Halo, what with the skulls and countless Easter Eggs that encourage you to digress from the beaten track. If a Halo MMO appeared I think it would feel incredibly natural. The game series now is iconic for its vast panoramas; in an MMO environment I'm sure it could thrive.

  • 06.19.2012 6:46 AM PDT

Yeah that would be epic i would defiantly buy it.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

You still think it's epic?

"It takes a certain kind'a lunatic to use a flamethrower…"

Halo as MMO sounds good on paper but probably wouldn't work in functionality

If they made an RPG iteration of Halo CE, I'd be pretty interested.

I am alpha, i am omega.

Helping out the 7th column community with reasonable posts since '07.

Why would lag be an issue? Wouldn't they optimize in mind for the concept at hand to work for the hardware on the consoles? Not to mention such a task would probably be aimed for a PC only release where hardware is capable of a resource heavy game with large scale in mind, say for instance PlanetSide 2.

Too cartoony for my tastes.

I can't believe anyone actually drew that thinking it was a good idea. Why? How is that even Halo?! It's just some cheap rip-off! The chainsaw... I mean, come on, Halo isn't some trashy, Saturday morning try-to-be-cool cartoon! And that AI, I mean seriously?!

If Bungie had done a Halo MMO, I'm sure it would have been great.
And if 343 do one, I have equal confidence in it.

As Skyrim? Have you never played any other Elder Scrolls games? Or even another open-world RPG?

I reckon whoever drew that never planned anything for it. Maybe they were just having a bit of fun.

The thing you have to remember about MMO's is that there needs to be all kinds of mind-blowing variety in it to keep it interesting to millions of people, to appeal to millions of people simultaneously. It needs to have the big government factions, and a -blam!- load of options in between the "good and evil" groups. It needs to have every aesthetic from functional to unconventional, to realistic to ethereal.

Bluntly, Halo's universe is not suited for an MMO. It is not diverse enough, it is too streamlined, and there aren't enough possible stories when the entire universe is built only off of one story. It is simply not big enough, and as the backlash towards Halo 4 "not being Halo" from the fans will tell you, the fanbase itself won't let the universe get big enough to ever be suited for an MMO. With that in mind, you can better understand the really bizarre look of some of these concept arts. They're the only way that a Halo MMO could ever work, which is to do something that wouldn't work in the Haloverse.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I've always been very much for a Halo RPG, for me I'd like one set on Sanghelios where you play as an Elite and I think it would be awesome if this was done like Skyrim with an expansive world to explore.

I could see a similar story to Skyrim where you have to unite the Kaidons, like the Jarls, in order to fight the larger threat (whatever that would be). :P

That's a very fair point you make. Also, embarrassingly, I was under the impression that MMOs and RPGs were the same thing to all extents and purposes.

Don't shoot me!

I agree with Ajw, a Halo-based RPG would be great. Bungie's and Bethesda's ultimate project?

An RPG would be more understandable, since there is no need to go all out to appeal to everyone. RPG's simply don't have to be as big as MMO's, so the Haloverse has more room to maneuver.

It'd have to take place post war, though; otherwise every battle would be an invasion. Maybe in between H3 and H4?

I disagree that the haloverse isn't expansive enough, I think it definitely is, but that being said, those designs are absolute god awful atrocities.
I don't see why they'd do that, the Haloverse is very militaristic, but you have that floating, AI looking female, that bulky guy in Spartan armour with the Chainsaw integrated, the middle guy, is the only one that, if redesigned, could fit into the haloverse. Even then it would have to be a complete redesign, he looks stupid and the gun unlike anything you would find in Halo.
All that said though, if you stuck to the core of Halo, no stupid stuff that would mess up the timeline, continuity or anything like that, it COULD work.
An insurrectionist rebel faction, an overzealous covenant faction, a standard UNSC faction and a heretical covenant faction.
