I think that Gravemind was once a human, and how he was created starts like the way we found Keys in Halo and then it progreses in stages until he becomes an intellegent flood leader. Supporting details are the Ackerson theories.

Gravemind is most likely a remnant from the 100,000 years war. He seems to have been there for a very long time, and know almost everything there is about Halo.

not only does he know almost everything about delta halo but he is also in control of delta halo. he controls the warp generators, he controls penitent tangent, he wraps around delts halo 3 times he's so freaking huge, plus gravemind is on Delts halo where the first human s down were with you when you had to go through the ruins, so unless a person got taken over by the flood and transformed into gravemind in the half an hour it takes to move from the start of the delta halo MC lvls to where MC meats gravemind there is no way Gravemind could be human.

His ability to control and even integrate with Halo and its subsystems suggests that he was a Forerunner at one time.

Mybe the gravemind was a forerunner that was kicked out. Then tried an experiment apon himself and turn into a flood being. Who knows.

Perhaps the Flood simply gathered bodies and compiled them into a living mass grave. However, the Gravemind does have characteristics that of an automaton.

Hang on, what is this 100,000 years war all about?

its about how 100 000 years ago the halo was activated

i think gravemind's ability to absorb people themselves IE the prophet of regret, indicates that he is one of the first flood forms to ever take place, he might even be the central brain for every little spore

Maybee but what if he IS a forerunner yes, I know this sounds crazy but what if forerunners (somehow) turned into this so called FLOOD, like, they degenerated somehow.
(Just a theory) BTW

Im guessin that he could be a great forunner genetic scientist who stumbled over the discovery of the flood which consumed his body. In his sucssesfull persuit to immortality he now is suffering the concequences. "Your deaths will be quick while we will suffer for eternity" Didn't he say something like this in halo2?

here's my theory

Gravemind was an experiment by the forerunners to make some kind of super bio weapon, perhaps to fight the prophet's race (who i'm pretty sure are faking the religious crap to loot the forerunners or something like that). Something went wrong and Gravemind (who was just an infection form at the time) absorbed a forerunner leader, and because of the wealth of knowledge he has, turns into a "brain cocoon" like keyes. This would also explain how keyes didn't just turn into a combat form flood. Keyes had all of earth's defensive plans and stuff. Over a period of 10,000 years or so, Gravemind matured and eventually hatched. He was blessed with several powers including the ability to make clones of his original form (infections). To contain him and his army, the forerunners built halos 1-7 and made it so only earth was outside the blast radius. Infants of forerunners were sent to earth with AI's to care for them and then self terminate so the children could'nt know about their past. These children evolved over the next 90,000 years into modern humans. Meanwhile, most life has to reevolve, and no life is on the ring to sustain the flood. Gravemind sends them into a hibernation-like state until they are released, which happens when keyes and company release the installation 04 flood.

I pay many thanks to the other theories who sparked these ideas and if i remembered any of your user names i'd cite you down here.

gravemind is like a sentient mass-grave. the proof is when we see regret getting like absorbed into him.

Interesting theory but we won't know how close you are until 1 hour after the game is released.

OK, yes, it is very true that I'm a dumb ass. I'm not denying that. However, isn't the whole point of a beta to increase the amount of users until you get someone dumb enough to try something you haven't anticipated.

if he is the central brain maybe he is just the central brain for just delta halo. and that there was a gravemind for each halo. or one that was forming for halo 1. and we just didnt see it in halo 1. or Keyes could of been formed into a gravemind. for CE just a few thoughts.

summary: grave was a forerunner that was floodsidized the same way keyes was. he just had a longer time to be floodsidized.
