Granted, she was already facing Rampancy by the end of Halo 3, but I think we can all assume it's the time between 3 and 4 that does her in.

My question is, why can't she power herself down until rescue arrives? Stave off Rampancy for as long as possible. It'd basically be her version of cryo; hibernate so you don't die.

I'm assuming thats what she did for the 4 years that the Forward Unto Dawn was drifting in space.

Would it not be more like hibernating than dying?

If Cortana can shut herself down (not sure if it's possible for smart AI's), then I would have thought that she probably would have to some degree at least while they were drifting in space - perhaps only leaving some monitoring processes running, to look after the Chief. Perhaps that's why she still retains some degree of stability even after 8 years, though I suppose we'll find out more about her state in H4!

She had a duty to keep Chief alive. If she powered down who would keep the part of the ship running and who would be there to wake 117?

There must be a spare computer around somewhere in there.

Trusting an incredibly inferior computer in a half torn-apart ship might not be a risk she was willing to take.

Why hello there.

I personally believe it is so she can reach metastability. I'm guessing she must go through rampancy in order to become metastable.

Rain, and Jazz.
Halo: Tactical

I'm either a fool or an inteligent man, depending on how sleepy or angry I am.

I originaly made an account on 07.27.2007 but I wanted to link my GT and made this account. Don't forget your passwords!

Well she probably did do something similar to hibernate, or atleast a low power state. There wouldn't be much power left in that ship and in order to keep herself alive over an uncertian period of time, likely to be very long, on that ship she would need to power down.

Plus when you factor in that massive Halo data Cortana is thinking/processing sicnificantly slower than normal.

  • 06.20.2012 7:20 PM PDT

She was probably organizing all the data she collected from forerunner installations. If I can remember correctly, I think Halo Origins took place (as in Cortana was speaking) beside Chief in the frigate.

Has 343 commented on how canon that all was? I personally don't believe much of it.

What a waste....

She might have to stay up to monitor things.

I would set kind of an alarm clock. If something happened, it would wake me up.

1. You do realise she isn't still carrying all that unprocessed data right? She spent time in the UNSC network aboard the Cairo station in Halo 2 and other ships, etc to unload the data and/or process and compress it so to reduce the amount it slows her by.

2. Cortana as a "smart AI" can't simply stop, to do so would increase the speed in which she decends into rampancy. AI's percieve time as slower than humans as they are much more capable and faster at thinking and processing, etc. She would've found something to do over that time, such as processing any left over data from Halo or new encounter with the flood, creating new protocols or translation software and such, changing Johns HUD and somehow changing his armour physically too.

3. 343 has said everything except odd one out is canon. I personally don't like it and ignore it as I think it's too flamboyant and in some places quite over the top simple for making it look cool. But then again, that's just me.

Lets face it man. They would never make it to Earth with no slipspace. Sure Cryo would help but it would still take sooooooooo long. And i'm not sure she was the same kind of A.I as Cortana??

I'm pretty sure Serena was a smart AI. That much sass wouldn't constitute anything lower.

  • 06.21.2012 2:42 PM PDT

In Human weakness she references that she needs to do a complete system reorder I guess sort of like defraging a computer to re index all her data so she doesn't become over connected which leads to the 'death' of A.Is they have to many connections between data. Also she says she can't sleep or stop like a human brain can which is why their life span is so short.

Bit of a critical flaw, in retrospect.

A Forerunner smart AI can survive for hundreds of thousands of years and still be coherent and semi-stable. We know that 343GS survived for quite a long time before rampancy kicked in, Cortana must surely understand that her imminent rampancy is simply a limitation of her own technology and that it could be avoided with enough of an "upgrade".

Surely during the 4 years adrift she has been working on this. Either achieve meta-stability or avoid rampancy via examining Forerunner technology and information from the various Forerunner information she has garnered. She has the Index and she has a fragment of Mendicant Bias with her, surely these two factors would help her and surely MB would actively help her to ensure his own survival.

she isn't exposed to any new technology and basically decided to turn her learning experiences on pause as cortana probably didn't because forunner tech seemed like enough at the time. I really don't know im guessing.
